Perhaps because it's more entertaining to try to throw people off for a little bit of time? I mean they ultimately wanted people to find out that it's really them, but it's just a fun side project that they put together. It's Green Day's typical hi-jinx to have fun in that kind of way... it's just who they are. They weren't trying to do anything other than just do a little something to keep Green Day fans excited with something fun and new.
