What a waste - Danny was booted from the band because he wouldn't (couldn't) clean up his act - last I heard of him, he was living in sheltered housing for the addicted in the UK. I s'pose here he'd be homeless!
Anyway - bloody brilliant guitarist. Only saw him once. Loved him since I first heard "Oh Well" - all his albums with the band are must-haves.
Incredible tone that Danny is getting, I wonder if he was using a different amplifier. Outstanding, one of his best cuts I have heard, thank you for making this available, this is a real gift for all of us!
danny picked up guitar at 15 , by 17 written up in melody maker in 1967 , and he is not even mentioned in rolling stone top 100 guitarists, 2011. he is my #1. he is a fabulous songwriter . his voice is perfect. play his songs and he will last forever
@texas4christ Rolling Stone has never really been relevant to anything but pop culture. I can't understand why anyone would even read it. It's like people mag for people who think they're hipsters.
Danny Kirwan is one of the best UNDERRATED guitarists in rock n' roll history. I really wish he'd get out & perform again. I'm sure I'm not the only guitar player who's a fan of this unsung hero.
What a lovely observation....!If you don't have them,i HEAVILY recommend the Reciever records 2 disc complilations ''The Vaudeville Years'' and ''Show biz Blues''. These have early Green Recordings wit Peter Bardens, Mac rehearsal tapes and Peter And Danny working together in their unique, symbiotic way in sessions for 'Then Play On'.
Check out 'Fast Talking woman blues(AKA Drifting)'' on Showbiz Blues''Like it This Way'' on The Vaudeville years and 'Mind Of My Own' on ShowBiz Blues.
@BLUESGUITARMANIAC Thanks SO MUCH or this info-compiling my own tribute to these early recordings and just came upon this-unbelievable talent -Green & kirwan-wish they'd gotten along better/gotten healthy but glad for all the music they made together! Love this music!!
Best backing guitarist ever.. and an incredible lead player as well. (check that trill.!!)
It's really bad that great guitarists do not not get their true recognition....Danny was a Phenomena with Peter. They seem joined at the hip while playing together as one, intuitivly.
He is having a laugh with the vibrato isn't he?The way he uses it is as powerful as Paul Kossoff.Fantastic stuff!I'm sad that he will never play again:-(
@ThomasDeLello Saw every real blues guitarist in the 60's and 70's but somehow missed Greeny. Sad Among the best - Albert King with his Flying V in a tiny club - - Stevie Ray showed up and sat in for a couple of numbers - unreal
@mikebloomfirld66 Yes; mostly in the Village in the 60's; a lot of times he was with Al Kooper; both were session guys deep in the New York scene back then They played on on lots of records as well as their own stuff. The craziest stuff was with Dylan ; the music was magical. Also check put "Super Session " with Mike, Al and Stephen Stills - a groundbreaking disc - "Season of the Witch" is an amazing track
Sweet voice, savage tone, sick lyrics and boyish good looks in his heyday. Kirwan was the fuckin man, man. No wonder him and Greeney never got on, I'd be a bit Green myself!
This is one of Danny's best blues performances - from the BBC sessions And one of my favourites - Little Walter does a great version too. Great vibrato and spot on melodic riffs.
Mental institution?! Gone insane? What Dickensian planet do you inhabit? By what authority do you spew this malinformed and ill said information? Actually, he's getting his life in order, to the degree that people with biophysiological challenges can and may adjust their circumstances, and your hysterical characterization is insulting to this artist and all folks with diseases. Get it right or shut the fuck up.
its true. i stayed in a place in londen for a short time and he was right next to where i slept and he told me who he was. i knew who was from lisening to lod mac.
Joe, I was objecting to the irresponsible and 19th Century uses of the words "mental institution" and "insane."
Most Youtubers are very young and such language reduces a complicated emotional/psychological state to something out of a horror film. Even Syd Barret wasn't "insane". And, NO, I'm not being PC. I'm trying to be exact; it can influence DK's practical and financial future as an artist.
@glennfryenpie Not sure if its true but i think hes in some type of priory in england & He still plays on his own, just not in public. Its really a cryin shame that had to happen to him cause I think he was a notch above his mentor even cause he had that Les Paul screamin! Too bad he didnt just stay in England and play round London. I can understand how he felt though, too bad he didnt take a holiday & get himself refreshed
I am not sure how record companies manage a band to create its own image to earn monies. I am so blessed that people post the music and precious photo like this one. Without you tube, I have ever known Danny's work. Thanks
Great, Andria. Danny always did exclusively his own original songs, rarely did covers but this (like World's In A Tangle) is fantastic, thanks so much for posting and love your slide show!!!--b
Danny stands out a mile. He is superb on this recording. I like your editing and stills on the video.
