Is “trøllabundin” etymologically related to “troll”?

@leoboiko I think it is. I am not 100% sure, but "trøllabundin" corresponds to danish "tryllebunden". According to my etymological danish dictionary, "trylle" is derived from the noun 'trold' (same as 'troll'). That make sense because a wizzard in danish is a 'troldmand' (trollman), and 'trolddom' = sorcery

I think it is safe to say, since the faroese word for troll os "trøll".. so the title actually means "trollbound", even though we wouldn't translate it like that, possibly because the word has changed from it's original meaning here in Denmark :)

It essentially means troll-bound; troll in this sense means more wizardry or sorcery than a physical troll creature :P

@leoboiko Yes. In norse languages troll is related to magic. A spell would (in swedish) be "trollformel" or more archaic "galder". Tröllabundin would be "trollbunden", bound by magic/troll power.

@leoboiko Well.. you can say so.. In Norway, we say: trollbundet, which directly translated becomes bounded by trolls, or troll bounded.. but when we say "trollbundet" we mean spellbounded :)

@AnnaGaldorcraeft not really no, she sounds inspired by it, but that is not joik. check out nils aslak valkeapääv, i probably misspelled his last name there. Boine on the other hand do joik, but she is influenced by the northern american native music, not an obvious source for 'original' joik, if one can term art as original or not.. it's suppose to be subjective, thus evolve. However, I would not say this is joik. But inspired by it?probably. The song is fair. All that matters in this forum.

@RavenOrca Goodness! She is wonderful and I love the sound of this language (Danish?). Do you happen to know if she has or plans to have an album with primarily traditional sounding songs like this one on it?Trollabundin seems to be loaded with other stuff (good though). Has she any songs in Faroese (?sp).

@Jeff8853 Sorry, I have no idea. I know nothing about her exept that she is a goddess in singing and performing ;) But she sang songs on faroese at Urkult festival (in sweden). I just hope that she comes back one day to Urkult :)

@RavenOrca Thankyou for your reply. As it happens I have read that her "Rora barnið " is in Faroese while prior to singing she speaks Icelandic. How marvellous!! .You are so right, she is like a goddess and I am sure that our old gods are as delighted by her as we are. You know, I think that part of the magic we feel is that SHE is magical. I watch "Faroe Islands My Mother " and I think she escapes us from time to time to walk among the stars with our ancient fathers. May she return to you soon.
