A goal of an actor is to have as many diverse, yet believable roles as possible truly becoming a wide variety of different characters and Gary Oldman I think is one of the few that personifies this. I almost forget his roles are all performed by the same person which is a compliment to his skill.

Gary Oldman is so good at acting, unless you really look for him, you can hardly recognize him through his performances. Just his ability to change his voice and his manner of speech to fit the character is amazing, I mean compare him in Batman to Dracula to the 5th elementt! And he's nothing like his characters in real life, so he's being that much more creative by going so far off from his own personality, rather than simply playing different versions of himself, like many other actors do.

RIP Gary Oldman - 29th May 2010. To be honest, I preferred him in "Batman Begins" and "The Fifth Element". It is indeed a great testament to the great british caucasian actor that he was to easily able to portray the role of "Arnold Jackson", the cheeky catchphrase-driven African-American scamp in the 80's sitcom 'Diff'rent Strokes". In that regard they can be taken about as seriously as any bloc of self-interested voters. The 6,000 members vote based as much on the quality of films as they do its box office gross or the external pressure to vote on a given issue in any given year (a female director, not enough blacks with Oscars, etc.).

@boffinme80 everyone knows gary, lots of people know he's amazing, the day he gets an oscar i will applaud in my living room and cry. this man is the most versatile, powerful, amazing actor of the 21st century and truly DESERVES an oscar, some actors get one truly great performance that lands them an oscar, ive NEVER seen one bad performance by gary, ive been waiting years for this man to get an oscar, even in supporting roles, he blows away the lead actors. LETS PETITION TO GET HIM AN OSCAR

The first movie I ever saw him in was Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. Fell in love at first sight....and he has NEVER disappointed me in anything he's done. EVER. And like diablectia asks....can I lick him? Lots?

This guy is an insanely good actor. He, in my opinion, is up there with Daniel Day-Lewis. He plays a completely different role in EVERY film he's been in. I didn't know it was him sometimes.

Ok seriously, the fact that Gary Oldman has never been nominated for an Oscar... should we even take the Academy seriously? I mean this is the same Academy who didn't even nominate Val Kilmer for his role as Doc Holiday. The Academy is a joke.

At least with the oscars TOm Waits got nominated for One From The Heart, and Midnight Cowboy won best picture. The techs vote for the techs, actors vote for actors, etc. Hey...I just saw the Michael Jackson doc...This Is It....and I was tremendously moved by it. Catch it in a theatre before it goes small. It knocked me out. (And I don't own a single Jackson record)

@settings99 The Academy isn't literally an academy, it's a bunch of people from across the industry who are asked to vote up certain people. In that regard they can be taken about as seriously as any bloc of self-interested voters. The 6,000 members vote based as much on the quality of films as they do its box office gross or the external pressure to vote on a given issue in any given year (a female director, not enough blacks with Oscars, etc.).

@settings99 Oldman's lack of so much as a nomination while Julia roberts has an Oscar--as far as I'm concerned--ends the debate on the relevance of the Academy Awards. It is a popularity contest. Period. End of story. Next question.

@restlessr84 I'll go further and say I like George Clooney's philanthropy work but as an actor he's below average. Yet he's been nominated numerous times and has an Oscar so yes I agree with you. It is all politics at the oscars.

@cycloppsdictator What pisses me off is that so many people forget to realize The Oscars are mostly politics. Look at a great actor like Christopher Plummer who's been acting since the ate 50's and was just finally nominated in 2009. Then you got guys like George Clooney. Clooney has been nominated 4 times and won once. I admire Clooney's philanthropy work and all but he basically plays himself in every movie. Once again, the Oscars are a joke to me.

I like to call Gary Oldman "The Man of Many Faces" because he always appears so different when he plays roles like Sid Vicious, Sirius Black and Commisioner Gordon. I didn't even know it was him when I saw him in the Dark Knight!
