  • HOLY F***!!! My brother sent me this video 3 years ago! o.O! So weird... I've only bee subbed to ya for roughly a year. heheh this is funny

  • haha...not to sound like a gaijin is fucking hard T.T

  • Konichiwa, Victor-Sensei! Rachel desu; arigato gozaimashta!

Not sure if everything there was correct, but just wanted to say hi and thanks so much for putting these up! I can pick out some of these phrases now in some of the anime I've taken to watching, and it makes it much easier to kind of "dissect" what I'm hearing.

Another phrase or word I hear a lot is "kimiga (or kimi ga?)" What is it and when is it used?

  • @rbenson5173

    Kimi = you

    ga = subject/topic article

  • Tadaima Victor sensei

(Does this expression is only used for the home or like for here, for example)

When I pick up my kids from school, I say... (I'm inside the car) Okaeri... and they tell me Tadaima... so I am wondering if I am using this properly.

    dozo yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

Oh and just read the MENDOKUSAI part.... gomen ne! [^_^]

  • @Laura17T

I never heard anyone use it in a car.... but maybe you could use it as a joke.

  • Hi Victor

How many hours should I study to learn fast?

  • @siemprenadia

Depends on you, but don't burn yourself out.

  • Hi Victor

What's the easiest way to learn katakana and kanji?

  • @siemprenadia

You just have to sit down and learn it. It's not that difficult. Took me a couple of days. Write them yourself and/or use flash cards - make them yourself. There aren't that many.

  • Comment removed

  • You've got the teaching technique down pat man, good work.

  • great video

  • could tadaima also just mean im back?

    or is there another expression

    especially for that?

  • Tadaima is used conversationally to announce that you have returned, yes.

  • These are helping me learn very much. thanks!

  • arigatou for upload!

    Jaa mata ne!

    xoxo

  • great vid

  • wow! sooo wasent expecting that! That really caught my by surprise there. Its a great video really catches your attention.

  • Fantastic. These videos have been very helpfull. THANKS.

  • Check gimmeaflakeman. New series. This week is sex related. Next month is functional expressions.

  • Thanks for the video. It's very helpful.

  • thank you very much for the lessons. i have learned alot

  • Thanks for watching!

  • Thanks a lot for creating these videos gimmeabreakman. They have been really interesting so far.

  • lmao I think I love you

  • Oops! I sent the comment to soon.. I forgot to say THANKS! I really enjoyed the video.. and I wrote down notes and everything!

    ありがとう!!!

  • I have a fast Question. Is "行ってきます。" written with 2 "ii" at the beginning? or just i? .. In the video it is written as "iitekimasu" but in the description box it's "Ittekimasu" ... that confused me a little..

  • every time you say watashi I laugh, lol

for those who don't know, watashi is the feminine(girl) way of saying I

  • Actually, it is just the POLITE way. In real life I usually use boku -- but only with friends.

I know what I'm talking about.

  • Yeah, watashi is not feminine at all. Boku or ore may be more masculine, but they're not really appropriate for talking to people you aren't friends with.

Atashi (no "wa" at the beginning, notice) is the girl's pronoun.

  • I remember seeing somewhere that watashi was the feminine way of saying I and atashi was the mixed way, guess I got them mixed up my bad

  • You are so much fun to watch. I would love to learn Japanese and visit Japan! How lucky you are!

  • you got some funny accent =w= . . .

  • Arigatou!

  • Ummm something that would really help on your videos would not be to just pronounce it to us but to like i dont know the world for this but like in english show us how to pronounce it like for example: no-ne or something like that lol

  • thank you! very educating.

    CERCL!

  • Fab thanks a lot. Love the repetition really helps it go in :D. Which vid do I watch now though...? x

  • NANIIII!!! :)

Props! this is an excellent way to teach a language. If only there were videos like this for Spanish! then maybe i'd know the language by now...

  • This is very girly japanese, guys not say this.

  • Not VERY girlish. Just standard basic Japanese. But thank you for your opinion.

    頑張ります!

  • Haa.

    Loved this.

    Learned much.

    THANKS, gimmeabreakman!

  • so how would i say to a girl "you're beutifull" ?

  • You should say KAWAII=cute.

    Kirei desu. = Beautiful.

Honto ni kirei desu. = Really beautiful.

  • kewl ty, is that pronounced how it looks? :)

  • KAWAII = Kah-why-ee

    Kirei desu = Key-ray dess

Honto ni kirei desu = Hone-toe knee key-ray dess.

    Hope this helps!

  • ありがとう。

    私は日本語が少しい分かりますから日本語を勉強します。

    ありがとう。

  • XD i love it lol ^-^ XD

  • Demo.. keep it up Gimmeabreakman you rock the house!

  • I was talking to my Japanese friends about this lesson and they said they would never say Tsumaranai mono desuga. This is the English equivalent of " Here is a piece of crap present". Tsumaranai mono desuga is very traditional Japanese and modern day Japanese would feel very embarrassed to say it.

  • I would agree...but it is something that ALL Japanese schools teach. It is traditional. BTW, are your friends young? Even my middle aged and older friends don't say it... I wonder why they teach it to us.

  • I guess it is good to know in case someone pulls a "Tsumaranai mono desuga" on you. Me and most my Japanese friends are 30+ ish. Modern day Japanese have more western ideas about giving presents.

  • ビクターさん。ビヂオがすごいいだね。今見つかったどころだ。I've been here about 5 years myself and Japanese is still an uphill climb. I like to think I'm making progress though.

I'd also like to suggest to anyone here serious about leaning Japanese don't shy away from the kanji. I know they're daunting but even if you learn 2 or 3 a day you'll collect a lot in no time. Also this guy Tae Kim's site is excellent for explaining the nuances of a lot of Japanese grammar.

    guidetojapanese(dot)org

    Cheers

  • Thanks Victor. Keep uploading 8)

  • Thanks again, all of these are appreciated!

  • Wow, this is really great. I'm learning (or trying X_x) to speak Japanese. I knew some of the things on here, (like in the first vid) but a lot I didn't know. Not only did it teach me knew stuff but it was a good refresher. ありがとう!

  • I guess something that might help me is breaking down the sounds? You're pretty good about speaking slowly and clearly without destroying the integrity of the pronunciation (as far as I can tell!) but the vowel sounds and consonants are hard for me to pick out and repeat. The phrases just move too quickly, and it's like a tongue twister for me.

  • It was like that for me in the beginning. All I can suggest is PRACTICE!

  • Ah, that's no fun! ;-) Ok, you're right.

  • It was like that for me in the beginning. All I can suggest is PRACTICE!

  • How do you say anime/japanese nerds should die by getting chopsticks stuck in their eyes?

  • omg how cool plz tell me how japan is. is it fun??

  • Uh... watch my other vids. I have lots.

  • Haha. Again no kids I know of.

  • "That I know of."

Yah, see THAT is the problem.

  • I loved the lessons, you have a positive sense of humor whilst maintaining respect for this globally important language. Thank you for sharing.~Collective Individualism~

  • haha awesome

  • 日本語がお上手ですね!

  • I've started to learn Japanese aswell for a short period now and this is very useful for me. You also bring it in a very funny way! So, i guess i'll subscribe :)

  • This is awesome!!! I have only one complaint and that is that the girl's voice is about 4 or 5 times louder than your voice so I keep having to turn the volume up and down again. Other than that, it's great.

  • this rocks hey look up breakdancing muppet its hilarious

  • 行ってきます is ittekimasu not iitekimasu.

    good luck.

  • I realize that, but for beginners I wanted students to get the pronunciation right. I thought it might be more helpful to spell it: iitekimasu instead of ittekimasu. I made this a while ago and actually forgot why I did it and thought I had made a mistake. Not a mistake. Just an error in judgment.

Since Japanese does not use the alphabet, I think it is a minor point.

  • the english spelling is unimportant, pronunciation is. anyway it's better to completely ignore the english and practice reading which will increase your comprehension one hundred fold.

  • nonsense, the english spelling is very important cuz the foreigner(beginner) can't read the (kanji)the japanese letters.when you misspell it at first then you can't pronounce it well.

this(って)letter means tte but not iite

there's no such word as iitekimasu,in addition the ii word means good, nice.jeeez go to Japanese school

  • Like I said. Error in judgement. Jeez, relax! (PS, I have...)

One real argument against you is the FACT that things are spelled differently in ROMAJI. Check the net. Example:

    Gokurousama? or gokurosama?

    Arigatou? or Arigato?

One of the biggest problems gaijin have is the chiisai "tsu" and the long "ou". Right? I was just trying to help out with that.

You have to admit that just learning hiragana would solve the problem.

  • AND you have to admit that despite "knowing" how something is supposed to be pronounced, a lot of foreigners sound very gaijiney when they speak. HEAVY ACCENTS!

Your point of view is noted. But is only that. An opinion. In my book, whatever gets the job done is "right". The sooner you understand that language is NOT a science, the easier it will be for you to learn it. It's like music, man. Peace.

  • i was replying to turkey... whatever man, and i know the "ou" sounds in Romanji man,i just want you to know about this って letter that you should have to be careful in using it,that's all.

    and one thing i'm not a man i'm a girl.yeah who cares.

  • It's all cool. It's good that you care... Seriously.

  • looks like someone took their testy pills this morning. LOL. anyway you completely missed my point. Gimmieabreakman got me though.

  • Thanks!

  • Gimmeabreakman, otsukare sama! You're awesome! Your video is not only helpful, it's hilarious! Having lived in Japan for four years, I've had to figure this stuff out on my own by studying and hanging out with Japanese friends. I really wish I had found your videos when I first arrived. Keep them coming!

  • Wonderful! Package a bunch of these and sell 'em on amazon or ebay and they'll sell like hotcakes

  • LOL sugoui

  • またね!

  • Guys an absolute idiot when it comes to anything but Japan, But he knows the Japanese language :)

  • Hey, J1Goro! Long time no see! How's the new baby?

I think your comment is funny, but I know you're joking. But you should write a happy face at the end of your sentence or everyone is going to think you are serious.

Say hi to Margie! Tell her to make you take out the trash once in a while! :)

  • Isn't MRirian cute :D Such a cute Japanese girl. Of course I was joking that you're an idiot pertaining to everthing but Japan. You know women as well obviously. I've never been married and don't know a Margie, best wishes though :p

  • Shhh about the women! I'm married now!

    Say hi to the kids!

  • dOMO arigato !

  • You should speak like you're in slow motion for us languaged challenged people.

  • sage

  • more more more...^-^

    you are awesome!!!! *haha*

    arigatou gozaimashita!

  • If "tsumaranai desuka" is "Is it boring?", then adding "mono" changes it to "you shouldnt have"?

  • mono has a few meanings depending on the sentence.

Too hard to explain in 500 words.

The most common meaning is THING.

  • 日本語はむずしいでもたのしいです。がんばって。

  • funny. helpful!

  • I don't think I have seen something this funny in a long time. Thanks man, keep up the good work.

  • Japanese when writen in english is very phonetic, meaning no extra letters for pronouciating. I saw two or three words with extra letters that were not pronouced. I find that odd. Was that an error, or am I not hearing it or am I just wrong?

  • All the sentences seemed to be spelled correctly.

  • you aint japenese but you sound fluent in it sweet!

  • How long did it take you to be a fluent speaker?? P-cat

  • the strange thing is that i could sound incredible fluent. i was on a japanese channel once. and i said something in japanese while reading it. the guy acused me of being a lair. because i said i didnt know any japaneseXD. although it sounded like i was a japanese

  • ThePeacefulCat... I can have a normal and even semi-intelligent conversation now..but I would say I am still learning. After about 1 year I could get around rather comfortably. After 3 years I started being able to pick up conversations in restaurants easily. I'd say 5 years?

  • Thanks.. I am and have been learning Hebrew for about one year now.. And I still struggle when it comes to talking about politics etc.. So that gives me comfort..

I have just been watching The Despatchers videos and some of yours.. A great shame.. I only wish I had been on here when he was banging out these videos.. It seems like he was quite of a YT celeb and very much loved..But most of all a great guy with a big heart.!! The Real Deal!! May he RIP.. Tx.. P-Cat

  • LOVE THIS VIDEO! thanks much!

  • Yep, thank u! Plz - continue

  • i think i saw u somewhere ...

  • CERCL!

  • Thanks for the very helpful lessons. The part where you say iitekimasu and do the gesture is lol funny.

  • I was trying to be helpful...not clownish! LOL!

  • It will help me remember what iitekimasu means.

  • I see the Pirates of the Caribbean poster (which I want), but what is the one next to it? I know the font, but I can't figure out what it says! The B....WHAT?!

  • THE BIG BLUE

  • wow!! does this mean youtube might finally do the right thing and partner you victor?

  • How do you say "We're sorry for the Rape of Nanking" in Japanese? Send your reply c/o the Japanese government

  • How do you say, "While the events you speak of were terrible and not to be forgotten, who the fuck are you as an American to mention this, and what relevence does this have to the subject matter at hand?" in Dakota, douchebag? Send your reply to an American Indian, if you can find one.

  • 1) This has nothing to do with Americans it has to do with the Chinese and Koreans

    2) Unlike the Japanese we actually ACKNOWLEDGE our past misdeeds, and I am all for continuing to make amends for them.

Is requesting a simple APOLOGY that offensive?

  • the japanese government has already apologized over 20 times. the chinese government and the korean government keep giving the "nope, apology not good enough" attitude. hell, both governments have even received money from japan. for example, much of that money helped make the infrastructure in china. anyways, sino-japanese ties are lookin better than before so i cant complain.

  • Alexkazu! Good to see you! Ohisashiburi desu! You still in Cali?

  • ohisashiburidesu-

    yeah still in cali ; ;

  • Dude thx for these lessons u rthe man!

  • charlie sheen is a good actor

  • Another nonsensical comment from you yahwtf! Glad to see you are consistent!

  • I liked it!

  • that was very helpful thank you. i think i might learn japaneses now

  • I've been living in Japan now for a few years - let me make it clear - I've never met more puppets in my life!!! Always caring about what others think & heaven forbid having your own "genuine" opinion... But love em just the same - It's where I'll be setting up my business - because I need these guys to make me money...even if it's at the sake of "themselves" - but they seem culturally programed to that!! ;)

  • I've been here almost 17 years. I used to feel the same way. I don't now.

  • oh, I wasn't aware that you'd been over there for that long.. I thought maybe around 8 years ago.. 17 years is a long time... :D

  • Puppets?

  • I like to say this. America and Japan has its fair share of jerks and zombies. I would say about equal. There are differences, I'm sure, but one thing I've noticed is that in America we have more variation and sometimes it is hard to tell who is who.

Puppets? They are ALL OVER THE WORLD.

    People are people.

  • no its tsu not su. i'm gonna study abroad in nagoya next fall yay!!

  • Yes, you are correct, KaitlynTV. BTW, what school/university?

  • it will be nanzan if i get in:) if not then i might go to tokyo!

  • Cool! Nanzan is very close!

  • Oh, and its SUmaranai, not TSUmaranai... I believe

  • Sorry, you are wrong. I double checked. It DOES sound like SUmaranai, though.

  • okaerinasai - nasai isn't needed at the end. Its just a formality.

a simple Okaeri- is just as fine.

    Same goes with Oyasuminasai.

a Simple Oyasumi is just as polite anyways.

But this is a good video for those who are interested. I look forward to more of these videos

  • thanks for making the video.

  • Hee hee Johnny Depp!

  • "tumaranai mono" is an expression of humility based upon japanese common belief in the innate goodness of man.

so you may not able to understand this type of expression.

  • I am VERY curious as to where you get your assumption that Japanese have an innate belief in the innate goodness of man. And even if that is true. How is that related to this expression. 「つまらないものですが。」ってどういう関係あるんですか?

    でも。。。

I should have pointed out the cultural background behind the expression.

  • Tsumaranai mono desu ga is litterally "its a boring thing, but" saying that the thing you're giving isn't all that great. You can just say "sumimasen" when you get a gift too, instead of the whole ki ni shinakute thing. This phrase is kinda dying out though, at least in tokyo, where its just "here's a present" "arigatou!"

  • Who are you talking to? Did you watch the video? What do you mean"here's a present" "arigatou!"

What is the exact Japanese? You realize I live here too, right?

Not arguing with you regarding this. Just want to hear your version. I agree it is dying out. But it's something all students learn. Good point!

  • I know a guy who got some japanese characters tattooed on his arm, he thought it said "lady's man", but it actually meant "lady like", aha, LOL.

  • I hear that happens a lot.

  • I just loved action with a words. This guy should make Japanese language (and culture ) training DVD, it would rock more than pimsleur, definitely. ( like Japanese Tradion here on youtube :D )

  • well he's got a japanese language (and culture) training yt channel! check out YT channel ActionTeacher

  • clearly..

  • You definantly need to make more of these.

  • hi grup etken listen please thanks

  • wow this was great i learned something today ^ o^

  • victor im goig to japan in april and i was wondering want would be a fun thing to take ???

  • Hmmm....good question.... let me think about it.

  • Awesome, I've always wanted to learn Japanese. Your vids are great mon!

  • I like you and your fun and happy vitality lol thanks

  • wakaka~

    Ittekimasu..

    Itterashai..

    funny~.. thanks 4 uploading this

  • I was JUST telling my friend that I want to learn Japanese, and then I saw your video featured. Hmmm...maybe it's telling me something. I look forward to looking at the rest of your videos. I think the phonetic spellings could be misleading, though, so I think I will just try to listen.

  • I made one mistake in this. ITTEKIMASU. Otherwise my phonetic spelling is standard. Thanks for watching!

  • I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you were responsible for the phonetic spellings. I think most phonetic spellings are a little misleading by their very nature (translating completely different sounds into the English alphabet). I've studied Russian and encountered the same thing.

  • I totally agree! No worries!

  • Thank you, yes, please keep the romanji along with the hiragana-kanji. It is helpful for me and at some point I hope to pick up a few kanji. I find it so difficult, since it changes due to context and if the word is Japanese or Chinese. I also like the woman's voice on your video. Keep up the great work!

    Dazed and confused

  • よいビデオ! ^_^
