few things on this vid, in general masasabi its not bad , we should be proud dahil atin ito, as ive said few things, para doon sa instructor nito , its kinda very slow ang dating , you have 6 or 7 girls at the back , but then then they never change their formation, sana you give them chance to dance sa kawayan as well, para sa ganun may rest din ang queen mo. masasabi ko is sayang dahil full cast pa naman sana.anyway , well done guys you should be proud sa sariling sayaw natin.
kulang ang excavation mo day at hindi malambot ang kamay mo day kailangan magpaturo ka sa isang mananayaw na purely maranaw... hindi ako empress day.....
Wheaeaeat?? i was just mentioning for her to dance gracefully and you talk about who massacred who. Besides there is really no such thing as "Filipino Race". We are "Malayan Race" of "Filipino nationality". So go forth and multiply yourself.....
Pls remember these are kids and they are performing to the best of their abilities. Also remember we have many cultural dances and this is one of them. This is not Bangsamoro this is called SINGKIL. And yes we do have Islam (Muslims) in the Philippines.
I commend u guys for coming up with this beautiful dance. Congratulations. I cannot ask for more from these dancers. They did their best! We did a simple singkil with only a pair of dancers (lots of kids around, but not interested to dance!).... and the four "clappers"... that's it. It is not as easy as tinikling. Singkil needs a lot of coordination with the 2 sets of bamboos and clappers.... I could just imagine the difficult practices...
Princess should have more graceful movement, it looks stiff specially when her fan movement... The wrists should move, not the elbows. But gj n e ways
in singkil, the prince is prince rama(rajah bantugan.. he is searching for his wife, sita (putri gandingan) who escaped her abductor, the demon king Ravana, and got lost in the woods(sita or putri gandingan was the one who got lost)... and then he found her..
i just got this information from wikipedia because we are dancing this in our cultural show...
YAH...IN THE history there was really no prince..only the princess and her maid..but a choreographer of bayanihan add the prince to make it more interesting..and the step of the dance seems like someone is following the princess so they think that perhaps it might be the prince...and this dance called as singkil because of the anklet wore by the princess
Traditionally, there was no prince. In fact, this province had absolutely no men. It was Bayanihan that modernized the dance by putting in a prince to make it look more theatrical.
That being said, I'm not bashing the troupe or the performance as a whole. I'm just saying that I see absolutely no sense of style, originality, or traditional upbringing.
Now you're just providing pointless logic. Of course there were men, but the men had absolutely nothing to do with the customs going on in Lanao. These rituals and stories were told by women and for women.
singkil is an angklet adorned with numerous bells.
thats why you can hear bells clinging whenever the princess steps.
this dance is an honor to a folklore "dayang" (princess) who able to jump over the falling logs due to the anger of her enchanted suitor through the help of her singkil anklets.
this is a royal dance of the maranao muslim philipinos composed of the dayang (princess), servant (lady with parasol), lakan (prince), fan dancers and bamboo clappers.
Cornhusk, it doesn't matter how other performances are. What matters is that almost nothing about this performance screams either traditional or original. Traditionally, there was no prince in this dance. So if you're going to have the prince in it, it has to at least be fluid and original. This performance was none of that. Good try nonetheless.
i totally agree with you. it was awesome but the princess should be concentrating on her arms and her hands, it looked as if she was really trying to watch were she stepped. um, the only thing i can suggest about that is working on your figure 8s with your fans, and relax your shoulders. it really helps. i'm not trying to sound like a know-it-all bc im really not. but i've done this dance many times and just passing on some wisdom.
@rodelleski Yes, they are Filipinos but not actually Maranaws. Even the Visayans know this dance by heart. When we graduated in high school, we presented this dance in our graduation ceremonies. The personality of the princess was kept secret and even the rehearsals for the princess was kept secret. The guy who danced the part of the prince fell in love with the girl who danced the part of the princess when the actual dance was presented in the program.
Constructive criticism: requires more practice as the princess is very stiff and not graceful.

@tarokirl THANK YOU for pointing this obvious thing out, but their too stupid apparently to realize the true beauty of their real culture...

I love the oriental-arabic mix in these types of dances, especially singkil.

@ThtOnePinoy allow me to correct myself, it isn't arabic, I was thinking of another thing.

This is our cultural dance! :D
bring back our traditional culture in the philippines
and move away from our colonial days. It's time to go back to our pre colonial traditions.

the princess should have a regal, calm and confident attitude! not so stiff but not arrogant...

grace is essential. you guys have to work on it. practice is really needed.
there's no prob with the lady-in-waiting's umbrella too far from the princess. i mean, aesthetically speaking, its alright for the dance.
having the prince is alright too. the bayanihan dance company did it.
for first timers, you did a wonderful performance. this dance requires the skill and you guys somehow achieved it. congratulations.

Wrong. I was born in Mindanao and saw a peformace wayyyyyy before bayanihan was formed. There was already a prince.

Sure, get the information right, but spell *FILIPINO* incorrectly =P

yep, it's spelled incorrectly. "Philippino" would have been acceptable, too.

the hand movements of the "dayang" is so stiff!
even the "lakan"
this is a royal dance of muslim maranaos in the philippines!
i feel disapointed because the costumes are so beautiful yet the performance is a bit off!
still job well done! 'coz no foot was hurt due to the clapping bamboos!

Is it difficult to learn this dance? I want to do it, it looks so beautiful, and I love the bamboo parts.
YuukaYagami 4 years ago
Good job but it could have been better.
A little constructive criticism here.
Practice more fluidity of the movement of the hands.
It should have been graceful and not stiff.
The girl carrying the parasol was too far from the princess who's job is to shield her. Notice the umbrella at times was no longer under her head.
More spritely feet movement should also be exhibited. And the male warrior dancer should also be given attention.
Good luck with your next performances.
