This isn't a lie, it's a simple mistake that anyone could make.

In fact, I argue that we need both as a balance. It's powerful intrest groups who have ruined this country (on both sides). Minimum wage: Well if we got rid of minimum wage, the people whose work wasn't worth about $7/hour would actually still have jobs. Somebody might say that if there was no minimum wage, then businesses would exploit their workers by paying them really low wages, but the worker could just find a new job. Nobody could force them to stay there. Competition is always best.
@ProudSpeakerofWhale, to expand on the minimum wage issue. You said that a worker being exploited by their employers should find a new job. Thats a flawed assumption, that other companies would say, hey we pay higher pay, come join us NO. The other companies would follow suit making that industry standard at that new lower pay grade. Keep in mind, they're profit first. Trickle down economics has never worked, never will.

What if a company can't afford to keep the jobs in the US because the work that needs to be done simply isn't worth $7/hour? Well, they would have three options. Go out of business and everyone loses their jobs, get bailed out and essentially taken over by the government, or move jobs to other countries where there is no minimum wage. I know which one I'd pick.
@ProudSpeakerofWhale, first and foremost, any job where people are getting a minimum of $7.25 are most likely working their ass off physically in most cases. I can't think of any job, part or full time that isn't worth at least $7.25/hour. It's almost impossible to live off of $12 and hour. If you get to the bottom of why any company has folded, I bet you minimum wage was NOT the reason. Without minimum wage, these greedy bastards would offer $4.25/ hour for back breaking work.

The companies NEED workers in order to stay in business. Businesses are competing for workers, so the people in charge would offer their employees the best wages and benefits they could reasonably afford so that they could make their own money too. Any smart businessman would know to do that.

@imalwaysright08 I don't actually know a ton about Social Security, but I know that I don't want the government to take my money now so that it can pretend to give it back later, but actually give it to other people. By the time I get old enough to retire (and I've got a ways to go) there won't be any money left for me. It's unsustainable. So I don't know about getting rid of Social Security, but it should definitely be optional.
@ProudSpeakerofWhale, I agree that our generation may be paying into something that we may never get a chance to benefit from. That doesn't mean however, that we shouldn't try to save it. It has provided too many people who have worked hard all their lives to have some sort of safety net in their golden years, beyond the years that they can work, it's only right.

The fact of the matter is that the federal government should me the last place anyone goes for financial aid. And who says I can't save money for myself? I think you may have a little bit of the "businessmen are evil" syndrome. Regulation prevents competition, while competition brings down prices and improves products at the same time. If a business is trying to exploit people, it will go OUT of business, because people will use someone else's services. Again, competition is always best.

Under Wilson (progressive) there was the "lost depression" of the early 20th century. Under Harding and Coolidge (conservatives) we had the Roaring 20s. Then came Hoover and Roosevelt and Truman (progressives) and we get the Great Depression. Carter (progressive) brings massive inflation, and Reagan (conservative) decreases it. How do you explain that?

In fact, I argue that we need both as a balance. It's powerful intrest groups who have ruined this country (on both sides). How can you support progressives when they think that government can SPEND it's way out of debt? Bush was no conservative, so I am not going to defend him. And Clinton left us with an unstable bubble, not a great economy, and there was no surplus. You can't have debt and surplus at the same time.

Minimum wage: Well if we got rid of minimum wage, the people whose work wasn't worth about $7/hour would actually still have jobs. Somebody might say that if there was no minimum wage, then businesses would exploit their workers by paying them really low wages, but the worker could just find a new job. Nobody could force them to stay there. Competition is always best.

Thats a flawed assumption, that other companies would say, hey we pay higher pay, come join us NO. The other companies would follow suit making that industry standard at that new lower pay grade. @imalwaysright08 Incentives: Do they? Again, I think this issue is directly related to minimum wage. What if a company can't afford to keep the jobs in the US because the work that needs to be done simply isn't worth $7/hour? Well, they would have three options. Go out of business and everyone loses their jobs, get bailed out and essentially taken over by the government, or move jobs to other countries where there is no minimum wage. I know which one I'd pick.

@ProudSpeakerofWhale, first and foremost, any job where people are getting a minimum of $7.25 are most likely working their ass off physically in most cases. I can't think of any job, part or full time that isn't worth at least $7.25/hour. It's almost impossible to live off of $12 and hour. If you get to the bottom of why any company has folded, I bet you minimum wage was NOT the reason. Without minimum wage, these greedy bastards would offer $4.25/ hour for back breaking work.

@imalwaysright08 So if there are no jobs that are worth less than that, why do we have minimum wage? Look, once again, I don't think you understand how the free market, and competition, works. The companies NEED workers in order to stay in business. Businesses are competing for workers, so the people in charge would offer their employees the best wages and benefits they could reasonably afford so that they could make their own money too. Any smart businessman would know to do that.

@imalwaysright08 I don't actually know a ton about Social Security, but I know that I don't want the government to take my money now so that it can pretend to give it back later, but actually give it to other people. By the time I get old enough to retire (and I've got a ways to go) there won't be any money left for me. It's unsustainable. So I don't know about getting rid of Social Security, but it should definitely be optional.

@ProudSpeakerofWhale, I agree that our generation may be paying into something that we may never get a chance to benefit from. That doesn't mean however, that we shouldn't try to save it. It has provided too many people who have worked hard all their lives to have some sort of safety net in their golden years, beyond the years that they can work, it's only right.

@imalwaysright08 How exactly is it "right" that I should have to pay for someone else's retirement? I've worked hard for my money too. The fact of the matter is that the federal government should me the last place anyone goes for financial aid. And who says I can't save money for myself? Why do I have to have the government forcefully taking money from me to make me save it? It really makes no sense. Social Security should be optional. And my choice would be heck no.

@ProudSpeakerofWhale, unfortunately, greed is human nature. Let's say we do away with taxes and minimum wage. Maybe some corporations would act in a way where it spurs economic growth. Unfortunately, my feeling is that most would adhere to their greed, and wages would stay the same and/or get worse. in regards to them wanting to be competitive, who cares about competition when their doing the same thing? See where I'm going on? You can't place too much confidence in human nature.

@imalwaysright08 Deregulation: Good! I don't know how the government thinks it knows what's good for business better than a trained businessman. I think you may have a little bit of the "businessmen are evil" syndrome. Regulation prevents competition, while competition brings down prices and improves products at the same time. If a business is trying to exploit people, it will go OUT of business, because people will use someone else's services. Again, competition is always best.
