This a love song from Alcohol to the drinker. One of the best pieces of musical art Elliott made. "One of"allows for many more though given his catalog.
@Oxidized181 It's certainly one of the best though. If you had to say to someone who's never heard Elliott Smith before, which songs to listen to to see if they'll be into him. Between the Bars is one of the first ones that would come to my mind.
@SethHesio i agree, it's one of his best song, but it's not THE best song, and that's what i got when i read the description. he should remove it and put one of his best songs
Lauren - according to many Elliott's aficionados this song is about his alcohol and drug addiction that he knows will lead to his death. He died at 34. No, you don't wish this song was written about you. :-(
It's so sad he killed himself (or was murdered by his girlfriend - inconclusive findings according to police investigating his death). :(
Poor soul attempted numerous suicides, a brilliant mind but hunted by demons. Does anyone else see the irony of Elliott's song being played in a movie about a person who too had a brilliant mind?
I've listened to this song around about 50 times within the past 2 days. It has so many meanings to each individual person which instantly makes it personal to somebody. It's a incredible song and definitely one of my favourites.
This is absolutely his best song no doubt. It makes me feel like I just want to run away and stop existing until complete peace surrounds me and everyone around me.
who else could continue to write the words deep within the hearts and souls of so many...Elliott was...beyond descriptive language...except for him...what breaks my heart the most (other than that "Mouse" S.O.B. who ruined his LA/Sunset Junction Figure 8 wall memorial, which was subsequently never repaired) is that, while Mr. "Mouse" & human excrement abound, the most inspiring and utterly beautiful die so so young...Elliott, Phil Ochs, Nick Drake, Shannon Hoon, & so so many others...what then?
Have you ever heard a song so beautiful you hate it, becasue it makes you feel supremely inferior, becasue you know you will never be able to write something as amazing? This....this....for me...is that song
@aaronmyers1982 The song is his bottle of jonny walker talking him in to drinking again. As you know. The song is a mechanism, a bigger metaphor. It stands on its own. Like a merry-go-round. Create a mechanism and youve matched this songs genious. I think of his music as basically a guy chronicling what it is like being addicted to drugs. Im in a similar spot as both you and him. Good luck and dont give up.

@Oxidized181 Oh yes, you're right on that. Music is such a subjective thing, the description box should never call a song the best.

I've heard this song before, from Madeleine Pyroux if I'm not mistaken.. Who's song is it originally?
They both have an interesting way of interpreting this song, I have to say

Waiting to finally be caught__
