on his census, he labeled himself as african-american only. In this country, if you even have one drop of "black blood" you'll be treated as such. Growing up, people would make a big deal of him being brown. I'm not surprised at all that he would consider himself just black. That was the perfect response. He fielded it without embarrassing whites or blacks.
Note: he poked fun at one of the black cliches that was complementary, but did not go into basket ball, or watermelon. You can tell that Edwards wasn't quite sure where he was about to go, and had an objectionable look building on his face.
Why this had to be a topic I'll never understand. But the President seems to know just what to say to neutralize the obvious potential volatility of loaded racial questions.

If you haven't already, I suggest you read his first book. It's all about how he deals with his race and trying to reconcile both his white and black heritage. He struggles to understand what it means to be black, because with his father absent, he was raised by his white family.
And he didn't always live abroad. He lived in Indonesia for 5 years and came back to Hawaii. For a good part of his book, he talks about his life in Chicago, and doing community organizing with other black people.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned this but Morrison's labelling of Clinton as the first black president wasn't in a positive sense. Here's what she meant:
"People misunderstood that phrase. I was deploring the way in which President Clinton was being treated, vis-à-vis the sex scandal that was surrounding him. No, she was saying that she didn't think the country would be ready to elect an African-American president for the foreseeable future. But that was about 10 years ago, before most people outside of Illinois had heard of Barack Obama. Let's face it: more people didn't see this coming. Even people who thought that he would eventually run for president figured it would be in 2012 or 2016. Let's cut her some slack, shall we?
And by the way, Toni Morrison endorsed Obama, not Hillary Clinton.

His connection with the Black culture is because ppl around him as he grew up treated him like a 'nigger' without knowing him but he never saw it because of is family. "well, they can dance.." It's fm the old Step N' Fetchit stereotype, making fun of traditional black minstrels. Google it.
