Mine does this when something isn't going his way, like a ball is stuck under the table. And he while whine, groan, and make this wookie sound until someone comes to solve the problem. He only howls in his sleep and it does not sound like that. First time he howled in his sleep it sounded like a coyote was in the house. lol I think each Airedale talks in their own way.

She has creeped me out twice in the middle of the night suddenly howling while in her sleep though. She would die of shame alone if she were aware of this haha
@marshmalphas I think this is not crying but way of communication or announcing that they are here :). I have a girl too, she is 9 now. She is also veeery dignified dog, unimaginable but does howl at night very often. We were frightened first time, took her to the veterinarian immediately :D. Than we got used to it.

Our Airedale used to do this! We used to get a Harmonica and play it and he used to howl his head off. Even at 13!

My Airedale also does this ALL THE TIME. It's more high pitched though. I'm glad to see that it's just not my dog. lol.
