The searches happen on both sides of the crossing, and they are ongoing.

Read the 4th amendment. They can't search without a warrant or extreme circumstances (a suspect runs in, they hear someone screaming, etc.), or unless you give permission.

Mike, I dont know if you know this yet or not, but your rights are very very limited at any international border. My local LIBRARY! says bags subject to search. You can get searched for any reason then sent on your way. Also, for a border crosser for over 20 years, I've seen customs and border patrol evolve from when they had white uniforms until now.
From what I can gather here, this was not an international border. As far as the library, if they are publicly funded government agency, you can refuse. I always do at my local library. Private places can only search with consent, but they can refuse you entry if you say no.

Well...... How bout not going on the ferry.... I feel better when people are searched. Amendment 4 was made in 1789 so it is about 220 years old and out dated. The population of the US back then was 3 million. That's as many in a big city now days. Not only that but we now have a lot more and faster ways of transportation. I believe if they decide to search vehicles before they board the ferry, they should do it to every single vehicle that boards the ferry rather than doing it selectively.
At least one good thing about the airport vs this is at the airport, every single passenger gets screened at security checkpoint before entering the concourse to board their flight. This should be done the exact same way as airport security.

Homeland security should be searching every car or every other car, if they had done that procedure you would have had people of all races getting searched sooner or later.
Homeland security isn't called police so they could probably get away with searching any car they want or any driver. Narcotics cops can do selective profiling too. A narcotics cop can pull you over whenever they want for any reason, doesn't need to be a traffic violation but they still need probable cause to search the vehicle. A traffic cop pulls you over for a traffic violation.
With a normal police spot check that also doesn't mean they go into the car and start searching, they do the normal check the license and registration, if they don't have probable cause, you don't appear to be doing anything illegal they usually let you pass and check the next car.
It's not just homeland security, normal police spot checks are unjust but no one does anything about that either. When theres a vehicle check they can't be selective with who or what vehicle is stopped, it needs to be every car or every other car, every 3rd car, etc.

I live near the place in the video and have crossed on the fairy boat from Galveston over to Bolivar many times, and I sit and watch these searches EVERY time I cross there. The searches happen on both sides of the crossing, and they are ongoing.

Oh Lord! people these searches are NOT mandatory. You can refuse at any point. These guys are trying to keep the ferry safe. Looking mostly for people with things that could accidentally blow up causing the ferry to sink! and I have lived next to and dealt with this ferry all of my life. this report was a farce much like all of his reports. These people are polite, and just doing their job. If anything happened yall would be the first ones complaining we NEED security. Get a grip

By entering an area that has signs posted, you are giving up your right to refuse and are consenting to the searches you were warned about when you read the sign. Mike, I dont know if you know this yet or not, but your rights are very very limited at any international border. My local LIBRARY! says bags subject to search. You can get searched for any reason then sent on your way. Also, for a border crosser for over 20 years, I've seen customs and border patrol evolve from when they had white uniforms until now.

From what I can gather here, this was not an international border. As far as the library, if they are publicly funded government agency, you can refuse. I always do at my local library. Private places can only search with consent, but they can refuse you entry if you say no.

Some amendments are with out a doubt out dated. Some however are a given. This day in age with the technology given we need to up the ante on how we handle situations. If I was to go on the ferry and it were to have some sort of an attack on it, and I survived and I found out that there was nothing done to prevent it I would be outraged as any normal person would be. We can not trust anyone even our own citizens. Sit back and do nothing, or try to prevent something? Answer that civilly.

Well...... How bout not going on the ferry.... I feel better when people are searched. Amendment 4 was made in 1789 so it is about 220 years old and out dated. The population of the US back then was 3 million. That's as many in a big city now days. Not only that but we now have a lot more and faster ways of transportation. If you don't like being searched then leave. You still have the freedom to leave the country.

Yes, I think searches like these are unconstitutional... but principle aside, if you cooperate, you should have nothing to worry about! I think in one way or another, peoples constitutional rights will never be completely protected, because there will always be a "need for the current welfare of the country" that the constitution will get in the way of.

the 4th amendment has exceptions for search and seizure on borders of the united states. so , this was perfectly leagal.

I believe if they decide to search vehicles before they board the ferry, they should do it to every single vehicle that boards the ferry rather than doing it selectively.

At least one good thing about the airport vs this is at the airport, every single passenger gets screened at security checkpoint before entering the concourse to board their flight. This should be done the exact same way as airport security.

Silly man, these are NOT DHS agents, there uniforms are different, this is a private company hired by the DOT TEXAS. And by virtue of you taking the ferry you are consenting to a vehicle search. Its people like you who will never be satisfied with anything they are not searching enough people, they're searching too many people. If a bomb goes off, they didn't search enough people, because they inconvenienced you by searching you, they searched too many people. Whatever...............

I agree.. This is one of the morons that thinks we blew up the towers... despite the footage of two jumbo jets flying into them (we planted bombs months beforehand and just waited) give me a break... YOU are the epitomy of white trash!

does not matter if the government wants to put you in jail they now have the power to do so without probable cause all they need do now is claim not prove national security. We use to have the constitution to protect us as citizens but Congress is allowing our rights to be eroded by the President.

And by the way. Im sure if a bomb went off in a car that went through that security line while you were there you would have a different story... You would be bitching about how they didnt do their job. To be honest your not looking at the big picture. And by the way "infodocurama". Those are not security guards. They are CBP Officers if they are wearing the patches you described, I cant see their uniforms to clear, but ya. These people attend a 3 month academy at FLETC and recieve more training than someone like you could EVER do. Its a difficult course. Just stop acting like your a victim of something and get a life.

How many Americans do we see getting arrested for running around our country blowing up buildings? Tim Mcveigh was probably the only American since 1995 not including the Columbine incident. 1993 the trade center bombing was people from Iraq. In 2001 it was Bin Laden's crew, but in this video no muslims get searched?

How does he know that these Homeland Security Agents enjoyed searching veterans and Americans. NEWS FLASH!!! It is illegal to profile in America. These are random vehicle inspections, i.e. every fourth or fifth car. I bet there were more Americans than Muslims getting on the fairy that day, so guess what, Americans are going to get searched. I understand measurments should be taken for safety against the enemy, but you need to know what your talking about.

Homeland security should be searching every car or every other car, if they had done that procedure you would have had people of all races getting searched sooner or later.

Homeland security isn't called police so they could probably get away with searching any car they want or any driver. Narcotics cops can do selective profiling too. A narcotics cop can pull you over whenever they want for any reason, doesn't need to be a traffic violation but they still need probable cause to search the vehicle. A traffic cop pulls you over for a traffic violation.

With a normal police spot check that also doesn't mean they go into the car and start searching, they do the normal check the license and registration, if they don't have probable cause, you don't appear to be doing anything illegal they usually let you pass and check the next car.

It's not just homeland security, normal police spot checks are unjust but no one does anything about that either. When theres a vehicle check they can't be selective with who or what vehicle is stopped, it needs to be every car or every other car, every 3rd car, etc.

Any time you cross the border you are agreeing to be searched. It's law. I'm not sure where this place is but the coast guard was posted there too. It has nothing to do with terrorism, it's police action. If they're private citizens they have to allow you the right to leave without search. If they're police they have the right to search every person that crosses, it's illegal for them NOT to search someone because of their race. That is the infraction I can see from the video. Get a lawyer

that ferry goes across the waterway entry to the houston ship channel the news speculated if a terrorist blows up one of those and sinks it in the channel it would shut down shipping until it could be cleared the houston ship channel leads to the largest concentration of refineries in the country

Do your homework before you speak. These are not DHS "Federal Officers" they are private security. Talk to the ferry and find out the auhtority given to the security guards. be happy you're free.

Homeland security is a total waste. They do nothing but totally useless activities to make people think that the government is protecting them.
If they stopped me I would tell them NO you may not search my vehicle.
They would have to arrest me or get the hell out of my way.
When I drive onto a military base I consent (you really can't say no them) because I consented when I joined the military. I did not however consent for civilian police to search me without probable cause.
