Thank you for this..I discovered the wonderful work of Joan Didion some years ago. Her essays especially those from The White Album and Slouching..are so perfect. Even though I lived in the 60's and thought I was plugged in..I feel I am being shown what that time and place really was about...damn. I thought Tom Wolfe was the voice..maybe even in a way Vonnegut. Joan IS. What a great writer.

@mickey1954RK You capture my feelings about her exactly. I'm now reading Slouching for the first time. I had read everything else over the decades, but realized I'd not read this one. Just breathtaking, the seeming simplicity of her style and what she observes, my god.
guywingfield, thank you for this brief moment of seeing her back in those days.
