Almost exactly an year ago, your video motivated and inspired me to learn the guitar from scratch, just so I can play this tune like you did. After a while, I did eventually get there using your tabs, and find it rather easy to play. Now, I have a beautiful and enjoyable hobby, and I keep learning more and more, all thanks to you. Hats off to you Sir!
Thank you for playing such wonderful songs! These are some of my favorites I listen to all the time. It's very soothing and helps me think about things to better myself and others. Please continue to play. Take care!
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as Chrono Cross. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
@oldwhtman You sir are one of the greatest musicians I've ever had the pleasure to listen too. Please keep doing these covers their all amazing, even songs i dont usually like sound amazing when you play them. And if you could, please put up more Naruto songs hahah and if you can make them longer, that would be awesome.
@ExotathXVIII Regular! If you are starting to learn buy one of those. They are cheaper, resistant and you wont note the difference :D the classical for later.
@ExotathXVIII an Ovation Celebrity has an amazing sound with silver/nylon strings. fiber glass body is rather durable as well. built in tuner... everything u need :D
@ExotathXVIII I agree with mike, I prefer the classical guitar too. too much acoustic hurts my fingers, i also like the wider neck, easier to maneuver for me (though those stretches + barres in this song are killin me)
@ExotathXVIII steel strings have a different sound as well. To achieve the sound he has you need the classical strings. With steel strings you'll have a grind noise that is much more prominent as you shift finger positions. To get the docile and mellow sound he has you need the classical strings.
Oldwhtman you are what the young should become when the years has past them by. Your a cool Grandfather and I hope your kids and grand kids appreciate you and treasure you and I hope all of Youtube does the same! Its so rare to see anyone let alone an elder be so appreciative of videogame music! =3 Thanks my ears enjoyed every minute of your playing and my eyes were amazed by your skills!
i think lonlonjp 's covers are more thorough and accurate(a bit like sungha), but yours contain more emotion and hence sound better to me. Subscribe !
you Must be the coolest old guy I'd hope to meet!! When I grow old, this is what I will be teaching my grandson to play.... and side note, I like the way you sound over lonlonjp on this tune...its either his guitar or his timing, but I think you give the best chords the pause they deserve
Oto-san, i don't really get on how to play the tabs for this song on your website, i do know on how to play normal tabs cause im just a beginner heheh XD could you please make a simpler tabs for me if you can? sorry for the trouble XD and hey, im your new fan today so i subscribed to you :D waiting for another cool game musics like this one! :)
@PorroFirst how's different to play this beautiful music, to other one? Yasunori Mitsuda is a great composer and it's great to see all kind of people playing this! You are the one that should get a life...
Awesome job! And not to sound weird or anything, but you say you thought that the minds of today's youth were infected with rap, but I can say the same about older people and not liking video games. Just about anybody who plays games like these and ACTUALLY enjoys them, also feels a strong connection with the music in the game. Like with me, I LOVE video game music and only like music that sounds it. =D
you are such an insperation...im 16 years old and love naruto and chrono cross.and you play them both and its so magical the way you bring out the song
sorry, one more thing. i'm curious, do you have any youthful tastes in music?
i only ask because, for a young person, it took me a long, long time to finally accept some modern music, i was very much trapped in the 60's/70's. in many ways i still am trapped in a certain time's music. but i've opened myself up to more through people i trust.
for example. a very current man, who i could listen to for quite some time. he goes under Bon Iver, please enjoy if you so choose to.
@oldwhtman i certainly would've responded sooner had i noticed you had!
i never thought to myself why i enjoy certain music, but you've come to a very astute conclusion. whether i've discovered music through great friends, a wonderful movie, love, or rarely, a video game, it is all very contextual.
but in that sense, you say it's not contextual for you? or am i misunderstanding.
could it have been both the music and the beautiful scenery? just wondering.
There's nothing wrong with hip-hop, in fact it's just as beautiful as this song. However, like anything else, there are people who abuse and warp it to make a profit.
@fongvang11 I think you are referring to the 'tie' symbol. I probably shouldn't have used it. It means that you combine the 2nd note with the first to lengthen it's duration. If you see 3(3, you don't play the 2nd '3'. Just the first. I should probably redo the tab.
i like this version. you are an excellent player sir. You have my respect. though it doesnt have the intensity of some other versions i have heard, your playing has a subtle grace to it, allowing us to hear how the chords fit together to create a masterpiece of music. and thank you for seeing the musical value in video game music unlike many people out there today. it was an honor to listen to this video.
Thank you for this! The song is beautiful and is one of my favorite tracks on Chrono Cross, I might consider learning how to play guitar just to play this. :P
there is something captivating about mitsuda's cross tunes.
i was curious though, was it the game and it's setting that inspired you, or the music itself?
i've been playing guitar arrangements of these songs for awhile. for me, i think it's somewhere in between. great games, great songs. mitsuda is a man for the ages
@Kingpinz0r Interesting you should ask. I've come to the conclusion that young people embrace music because of the context in which they hear it. This music isn't what typically grabs the young at heart. I'm not sure I ever played the game. I watched my daughter play it. It's just the music for me.
@oldwhtman I understand what you mean. Most youth today, unlike myself, aren't really interested in true meaning but yet a resemblance to how their lives currently take shape. I love all the songs from the Chrono cross because the composer puts his soul into the work, you can feel every motion come out. And you sir play it beautifully might I add. Music like this makes me feel spiritually better as if things will always be better and that people truly understand.
@oldwhtman Well if you ever get a chance, you too should play the game at least once. It's quite the story and the music really plays well with the feeling of the whole thing. Cheers though! :)
@oldwhtman Interesting observation. When i was a kid I played a bit of Chrono Cross (probably just a few hours of gameplay) and I didn't play it anymore. The music didn't leave a big impression to me. As I grew up though, I started to remember how beautiful the intro music was and I desperately searched for my CDs just to hear the music again. Now I am 21, and Chrono Cross remains my favorites of all time. It's miles ahead of most songs I heard these days (at least in my opinion). A masterpiece.
@oldwhtman Oddly enough, it must be the opposite for me. A lot of games that I've been drawn to play more of had great music starting out. I wonder that I kept playing them, at least in part, to simply hear more great tracks and was enticed by further elements from there.
It was even so for old 8-bit games like Castlevania. Always managed to look past the digital sound and admire the composition! It takes real talent to take such a limited medium like that so far.
@Chrishankhah I agree. I have always admired the composers from the 80s who only had 8bit sounds to work with. They did some amazing things with what they had
@oldwhtman I highly HIGHLY recommend you to play this game. Seriously, it's a completely different kind of game than today's RPGs. It's art is amazing in all senses, and IMHO it's the most beautiful game of all time. It had strong influence in the kind of person I became, it's trully a very rich experience that makes you think about many things. Maybe you could give it a try and see if you like it - I can send you disc ISOs (for burning CDs or playing on playstation emulators) if you'd like.
@oldwhtman There is a computer software called guitarPro that i used when i wan't to learn a new song... if you find a good tab of the song is easier. It also allows you to compose music on it. You probably will turn into even a greater guitarist with that tool at your disposal.
@deadsymbol05 I am familiar with the program. I use TuxGuitar, which can read and create Guitar Pro files. Currently, I use TuxGuitar to enter the tab and then export the tab to Lilypond for creating the pdf files. This tune was tabbed before I adopted this method. I used an old postscript program called 'pstab' to do "Fragments of Dreams". Eventually, I would like to convert the old stuff to TuxGuitar and Lilypond files. But doing new tunes takes precedence with me.
@sum1uknoh I'm not sure what the Youtube rules of etiquette are on this matter, but I forgive you. I'm sure he'd forgive you as well . . . he has many more viewers than I do. Thanks for the flattering comment.
I really like how you play, it seems so...hmm...full of emotions and thoughts
Been watching pretty much all of your videos and I'm impressed by your wide array of songs taken from various animes and games! Anyway, just wanted to say that you're amazing
Everytime I hear this.. I... ARRGH! It's so beautiful, I can't describe it in word! Since it's so beautiful, I tried playing it, but I noticed what true skill means, and failed.
excellent job. I am an avid fan of Video games as well as the composed pieces within them. Chrono Cross is packed with stellar pieces, its hard not to feel like there isnt some kind of magic in this world when listening to a gem like this when played by someone skilled such as yourself. Keep it up, i appreciate all your acoustic covers.
@VAPRODUCTIONS42101 Thank you for comment and your attention. I wonder how much Mitsuda music is out there that I've never heard. He's some talented guy.
nobuo uematsu, yasunori mitsuda, koji kondo have some of the greatest music i've heard and i was lucky enough to grow up with these games and songs. if only people knew what they were missing.
how did you get know these songs, though? requests leading to curiosity or did you actually play these?
beautiful song sir... I love this song & you defiantly brought out the true beauty of its slow, relaxing, tempo. Kudos to you sir, your an inspiration to aspiring guitarists everywhere
@SilentShadow1991 Thank you. I'm glad the next generation has such good taste in music. I thought the minds of today's youth were infected with nothing but rap and hip-hop.
@TheUltimateWeeGee Sorry, if my comment about rap and hip-hop offended you. Though I genuinely don't care for either, I don't need to say so publicly. Sometimes these opinions slip out before I can stop them. My apologies.
@TheUltimateWeeGee Sorry, if my comment about rap and hip-hop offended you. Though I genuinely don't care for either, I don't need to say so publicly. Sometimes these opinions slip out before I can stop them. My apologies.
@oldwhtman Definitely not! I have 20 and I can assure you, there are young(er) people that realize the crap that today's music is. Just don't pay too much attention to what's on the media - only the crap will be promoted as "mainstream".
@DaDushbag I'm not sure anyone can help what they like or dislike ... good or bad. I've never found anything appealing about rap and I'm not sure what makes a piece of music hip-hop. I might like some of it and not realize it. Is Lady Gaga hip-hop? I love her stuff.
Wow... I am amazed by his skills... it's great to see that someone other than young people can be into video games and cherish the beautiful music that they have to offer (in addition to wonderful stories and great gameplay!). Play on, old man! :-D
After like... Two years, I still haven't learned the second half of this song. I used the tabs you gave us, and... I don't know. I'll get to it. Maybe I can post a video response!
So many people consider the music composed for video games nothing more than video game music. But this is proof that it can capture anyones heart.
Music is such an amazing way to express yourself, and i love the way you play every piece. Keep playin cuz so many people love to listen to it. You bring so many people happiness in listening to your music, and that makes you a real guitarist. Subscribed :)
Right on, right on. I know too many people who immediately package the "sound of video game music" together with video games, rather than acknowledging that it stimulates them. Heheh.
kick ass man, seems like you're really into video game and anime music! You are a singular proof that music is timeless and ageless. Keep on playing always man!

excellent job.

@oldwhtman One question, is it a good thing if I like ALL kinds of music, including the rap and hip-hop?
DaDushbag 1 year ago
@DaDushbag I'm not sure anyone can help what they like or dislike ... good or bad. I've never found anything appealing about rap and I'm not sure what makes a piece of music hip-hop. I might like some of it and not realize it. Is Lady Gaga hip-hop? I love her stuff.

Subscribed :)
wilsonjchris 2 years ago
Right on, right on. I know too many people who immediately package the "sound of video game music" together with video games, rather than acknowledging that it stimulates them. Heheh.
