And I might add that if I were to be a serial letter writer to teenage girls and invite them to my house the day after they turned 18 and bang them... well, I'd be in jail.
I can still recall I was reading this book all the time when I was a student. I was speaking like Holden was in the book. So many years past since this time and there is The Catcher in the Rye in my room. I don't actually read the book the way I used to but still this Holden spirit is in me, although I don't openly say that in my life...

"I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes. That way I wouldn't have to have any goddamn stupid useless conversations with anybody. If anybody wanted to tell me something they'd have to write it on a piece of paper and shove it up my butt. They'd get bored as hell doing that after a while, and then I'd be through with having conversations for the rest of my life".
I went to that krazy school and Salinger had a great effect on me. I became an eng major and even went to Columbia because he did also. They really didnt like the book when I was there, I dont call Valley Forge "Pencey Prep" - I refer to it as "Lord of the F?lies High", Its a place where only bullies and phonies could like. Its sad JD has left us, but its been rumored that hes been writing all this time and hopefully we will get to hear what ever happened to the wonderful Glass family...
Holy crap! did Salinger fuck your mother, or what? Catcher in the Rye is over rated in my opinion, but it's still in my top 20. Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour is his best. The guy (JD) captured a slice of Americana, the misanthrope in uncertain times. World war, not living up to expectations, running away from problems to drink and get laid. Sounds pretty fucking American to me.
This guy is wrong by saying that he was most like Holden, and even my English teacher says that most people think that, but the real truth is that he's most like D.B. in "The Catcher In The Rye," which is Holden Caulfeild's brother!
If you have read the comment that I replied to, you should be ashamed of yourself to put him in the same ilk as Emily Dickinson. Having said that, it was put forth as an internet insult and not a blanket rule.
Dude, you make no sense! I was trying to say that the guy is wrong by saying Salinger is most like Holden, but really most like D.B. I don't find that insulting, but rather you are, for an attempt of shaming me!
Ah I am sorry. I replied to the wrong comment. The guy I was replying to has deleted his comment. I called some guy a moron for using capital letters for no reason. And someone else said that Emily Dickinson used capital letters strangely too. I was replying to that guy. Just a case of mistaken identity.

Actually his book Catcher in the Rye was CRAP. The reason it sold so many copies is because the Department of Education in the USA decided that it would make this book part of the study program that all students "MUST READ".. this certainly lifted sales and made the book appear to be a life long high selling piece of literature.. WHAT A LOAD of rubbish it is.. READ IT and then comment... Its the story about a kid who skips school and the WHOLE book goes nowhere. CRAP BOOK! and CRAP Author.
im guessing that most people who have bothered to look up this video have read Catcher in the Rye. You are entitled to your opinion. But your opinion is a massive pile of shit.
Explain to me exactly HOW his novel was a "GREAT EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN LITRITURE"?? Go on? and don't cheat, NO looking it up in Google and posting some crap that's already been written, YOU tell me in YOUR simpleton words, WHY his work is so good? I want my money back for that SHIT he called a Novel..
Oh and by the way, GUESS WHO loved his book? George W Bush! That alone proves how DEEP and POWERFUL this book was, when a stupid head like Bush enjoys it. Someone here answer my question? WHAT PART OF CATCHER IN THE RYE was GREAT EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN LITRITURE? Spend MORE time focused on giving me an answer that commands respect and less time with insults THAT ONLY EXPOSES YOU AS BIGGER FOOLS!..
yess well, your comment just shows the level of your class. WHAT ON EARTH is your post about? and you speak of respect? your so stupid, that you've publicaly displayed that your a wanker and fool.
Brigadier General Sanelli was a very good and honest man. It is too bad that he is no longer living. Whatever it is that cadets are getting out of Valley Forge these days is less since he is gone.
BG Gen Sanelli was my Mentor during and after Valley FOrge. I had the honor to have BG Gen Sanelli pin my bars on during my Officers Commissioning ceremony.
BG Sanelli certainly was the long standing VFMA Mentor and Alumni extrordinaire - so many were blessed by his work and wisdom. I know i was.
those "shower rooms" in between the rooms in wheeler hall... they are now bedrooms now.... i lived in one when i was a new cadet, it sucked, i believe this video was taken my plebe year ('03-'04) because i can hear one of the squad leaders (SSG Gordon) telling people to stay in their rooms
So was Richard Kensella. Have you seen Field of Dreams? Salinger was the writer in the book, shoeless Joe. When they made it into a movie, he said,"If you use my name, I'll sue you".So they had to make up that black character who is political, but likes baseball. Salinger likes baseball.
New Years day was Salinger's birthday. He was ninety. Will he ever come out again. I doubt it. Sure would like to hear some more about the Glass family though.
A teacher secretly lent us this book and we passed it around. She said,"There are so many boys like Holden Caulfield."I don't think I'd like to hear it discussed in class, better on the sly.
@indhold if you are saying that James Castle did'nt die, and critisizing creativity, then you are also saying that Stephen King, Stephanie Meyer, Ernest Hemmingway, Ray Bradbury, and many other literate authors are unimportant. and Yes! You are clearly critisizing creativity!
@Ghaiyst You got me all wrong, my critisism isn´t against creativity actually ist for creativity, if that makes any sense. Of course there are similarities between pensey prep and the school salinger went to, but I don´t give a shit and "it kills me" every time people try to pin out these similarities. It is so unimportant. James Castle died and the "real James Castle" didn´t - so there is no connection - they are not the same and that goes also for King, Meyer, Hemmingway and Bradbury.
@indhold there's a connection in that these were people and places that helped inspire Salinger to write the book in the way that he did, and possibly helped shape the way he thought about the world.
To a lot of people that is interesting, worth looking into, and more intellectually rewarding then just stomping your feet and saying "they're not exactly the same so why should we care?"
