I can still recall I was reading this book all the time when I was a student. I was speaking like Holden was in the book. So many years past since this time and there is The Catcher in the Rye in my room. I don't actually read the book the way I used to but still this Holden spirit is in me, although I don't openly say that in my life...

I went to that krazy school and Salinger had a great effect on me. I became an eng major and even went to Columbia because he did also. They really didnt like the book when I was there, I dont call Valley Forge "Pencey Prep" - I refer to it as "Lord of the F?lies High", Its a place where only bullies and phonies could like. Its sad JD has left us, but its been rumored that hes been writing all this time and hopefully we will get to hear what ever happened to the wonderful Glass family...

Holy crap! did Salinger fuck your mother, or what? Catcher in the Rye is over rated in my opinion, but it's still in my top 20. Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour is his best. The guy (JD) captured a slice of Americana, the misanthrope in uncertain times. World war, not living up to expectations, running away from problems to drink and get laid. Sounds pretty fucking American to me.

Actually his book Catcher in the Rye was CRAP. The reason it sold so many copies is because the Department of Education in the USA decided that it would make this book part of the study program that all students "MUST READ".. this certainly lifted sales and made the book appear to be a life long high selling piece of literature.. WHAT A LOAD of rubbish it is.. READ IT and then comment... Its the story about a kid who skips school and the WHOLE book goes nowhere. CRAP BOOK! and CRAP Author.

@Ghaiyst You got me all wrong, my critisism isn´t against creativity actually ist for creativity, if that makes any sense. Of course there are similarities between pensey prep and the school salinger went to, but I don´t give a shit and "it kills me" every time people try to pin out these similarities. It is so unimportant. James Castle died and the "real James Castle" didn´t - so there is no connection - they are not the same and that goes also for King, Meyer, Hemmingway and Bradbury.

@indhold there's a connection in that these were people and places that helped inspire Salinger to write the book in the way that he did, and possibly helped shape the way he thought about the world.

To a lot of people that is interesting, worth looking into, and more intellectually rewarding then just stomping your feet and saying "they're not exactly the same so why should we care?"
