FFXI was a pretty epic mmo for awhile, especially the Chains of Promathia storyline. I've seen hate reviews but they are usually over weighed by the good reviews. FFXI is a game in itself. Just like how the 1st Phantasy Star game had nothing to do with Phantasy Star Online, well had some similarities but side from that it was just like FFXI only difference is you didn't have to shell out 20 bucks a month.
