where does Bruce get these stories from. where/what was he doing in his late teens and early 20's. ? surely no one else has written stuff like point blank , drive all night . backstreets . jungleland. and put it to music so when you listen there are pictures running through your mind that are like a 'dark' film. when you listen to these versions from the 70's they are filled with so much emotion.
@artfuldodger1951 well I'm guessing he was doing things like, buying some shoes, going to ny city a lot, driving deep into jersey's backstreets, and possibly shot someone really close up ;)... bruce is the man!!
Conbaz and Nail: so true. Nothing comes close to this stuff. B/USA is garbage next to the earlier stuff. Tunnel of Love was damn good, too. Since then: chazzerai. Bruce has become a parody of himself, arrogant and smug. I miss him sorely.
This is part of his start. I will say that some of what he did with other musicians beside the E-street band, takes some getting used to. Not always what I would prefer to listen to myself, but that is how it goes.
I do find the last part of your comment to quite off the mark, but it's your opinion.
chazzerai. Bruce has become a parody of himself, arrogant and smug. Looked in the mirror lately? :)
Very few American artists have this kind of depth. This is one of my favorites from the Boss, but I have to say that many of his songs have this complexity both lyrically as well as musically. He is truly a treasure, and he has kept coming with it, up to and including with Magic. Never disappoints.
Great clip thanks for posting. Notice the slight lyric difference from the cut that ended up on the River, like this one too, little different transistions as well.

I agree with conbaz & nail. This era from 1975, to 1980 was Springsteen's zenith. His passion couldn't be topped, nor his ROCK!! City-Rock!! Truthful Rock!! Passionate Rock!! Born in the U.S.A. was a great ablum!! And it gave Bruce the recognition, and money he well deserved. But, IMO can't come close to the previous 3. (Nebraska excluded.) Can't wait to see him again!!!!!
I COMPLETELY agree w/ everything you've stated above DOConROCK1. Used to listen to this concert on 8track (constantly) in my Dads '66 Mustang back in '78. My girlfriend thought I was nuts. She said "you'll be sick of this soon". Well....she's ancient history...& I guess I'm still nuts. I love this version better than the one on the "River". Always got a rush hearing songs that weren't even out on an album yet. Nothing, I mean NOTHING like the "Darkness" days. Again, well said.
Despues de the River Bruce Springsteen nunca llegó a ser tan bueno. After the LP The River, Bruce Springsteen never was so good.. Born in the USA is very Comercial, but is not good
i have been arguing that very fact with the people listening to his new song radio nowhere..you cant even compare his stuff from the 70s to what hes doing now..i liked born in the usa when it came out ..but i cant even listen to it anymore..thats when it all changed
Wild Innocent & E St Shuffle, BTR and Darkness are the three classic Bruce albums IMO plus half of The River including this song - they include all his best romantic songs in the epic rather than just the "boy meets girl" sense eg Sandy, Jungleland, Candy's Room -
Would it be fair to say that the Darkness era is the most productive Bruce era of them all? Not only is Darkness brilliant but many of the best tracks on 'The River' were actually produced during the earlier Darkness period (for example, Independence Day, Pont Blank and The Price You Pay). One final piece of evidence is that most of the best cover versions of Bruce songs also date from that era (e.g. Because The Night, Fire, Hearts of Stone, etc.)
I road around the midwest in a comnpany van for years wondering if the pain would ever stop and this song rolling around in my head and heart Then One day it did ... the pain stopped after an uncontionable demoralization then a transformation a life altering change and the sun came out again I could see ... time for a change .. listen to your heart
kiplingbag: Your words are beautiful. I believe they would indeed be an accurate description of Bruce. His songs from long ago to recent releases have gotten me through many a hard time. I feel blessed to have him share his talents and have his music to listen to. :)
This was from Passaic, NJ '78. Two years before it came out on the "River" album in 1980. I always did prefer this version to the one on the album. The lyrics are a little different, more haunting and powerful.
LOVE YOU BRUCE!!!COME TO CROATIA PLEASEEEEE!! <3
