I still had some of these up until about a year ago. They were originally a Christmas present back in the 1990s from my spouse, who had seen Ginsu knives favorably reviewed by Consumer Reports. I added a universal knife block and a 3-piece set of Ronco knives (including a "Ronco Rocker"); then I bought a set of Miracle Blade 3 knives & got rid of all my old knives. Finally replaced everything with a Ginsu Kotta set w/block for this Christmas when the universal knife block (a Kapoosh) broke.
We actually still have some of the steak knives around, bought them in the early 90s. Honestly i might get a new (old) set off ebay because of the ones we have lasting as long as they did.
@BigDumbJerk It's supposedly made of a high carbon steel which is supposed to be good at holding a sharp edge. Stainless steel doesn't hold edges very well and need to be sharpened often. They should last more than 50 years, no problem though high carbon steel rusts easier, so you probably most likely have to oil em before putting em away.
The point wasn't that you should attack lead pipes with your knives and then use them for food prep. The point was supposed to be that the knives are so sharp and durable that they can do insane things like cut through pipes, and still retain their edge enough to cut food well.
"can saw a lead pipe and still slice a tomato" ok, two things about that: lead is so soft it wouldn't dull the knife at all and do you REALLY wan't to prepare food with the same knife you just used of LEAD?!
Maybe it wasn't a Ginsu ad that I'm looking for, but I could swear it was... it featured a "demo" in a restaurant featuring the worst acting ever. I still remember two diners delivering the classic lines "I think they're fanTASTIC!" and "Where.. can.. I... get.. a.. set?"
This is THE commercial that invented tacky "infomercials" and "advertorials"
When I first got my hands on a video camera, my first masterpeice was a spoof of this ad using this exact knife chopping through nails, shoes and copper pipes. I may even still have it!
Mine is rather dull now 16 years later. I'm going to claim under that 50yr warranty.

Yeah exactly, you aren't ACTUALLY supposed to use them to do heavy masonry; the point is that they CAN do it.

For ages, I have been looking for a knife, that destroys chicken instead of just cutting it!

It's the Jesus Christ Knife! Named for what you say when you cut through a nail, a pineapple, a turkey, then your fingers!

the producers must think people are retarded. "never needs sharpening" sad thing is some people will believe that.
BigDumbJerk 2 years ago 2
It's serrated, so you can't really sharpen them so much.

Still doesn't answer my question. I'll ask you, do you often eat food prepared with a tool covered in lead fillings?

Priceless. Ginsu aired a totally different commercial for the exact same knives in 1992. They sure knew how to milk the lifespan of their products.
