  • quite shit scene...no say your last prayers mr drill sarge, no nothing. And the sarge was quite funny xD

  • If Hartman kept his big fat mouth shut he'd still be alive.

  • isn't that the guy who's starring in Law & Order?

  • My favorite scene from this movie as well.

"If we get caught, we'll be in a world of shit."

"I already am in a world of shit."

Kubrick was a master when it came to portraying pain and suffering.

  • More serious than when Barnes murdered that village lady in Platoon.

  • The music is so epic

  • if you look closely at 4:55 you can see blood being sprayed from the side. not the bottom or straight forward.

  • The sad thing is Pvt. Pyles would have been an effective sharpshooter to have on the battlefield.. He had determination.

  • I started watching this movie thinking it was just a comedy but this scene really took me...

  • 2:08

    best scene ever.

  • I would have been so fucking scared if I walk in to a bathroom and see a guy sitting in a toilet loading an M14.I would have hit the guy with that stick and run away to Mexico lol

  • WHAT IS THIS MICKEY MOUSE SHIT!? XD!!

  • What is your major malfunction, numbnuts?!

  • Looking at a few comments im surprised no one has questioned the by Soviet (C) 2007 at the end of the video, since the copyright doesnt belong to the youtube user.

One thing is to upload the video but to claim copyright on it also, your risking being done for copyright infringement, id take the (C) label off and reupload if I were you

  • I can imagine the drill sargeant yelling "YOU CALL THAT A SHOT!!!"

  • How'd he get the rounds? keep a few after every firing session?

  • The movie would have been alot better if he would have killed alot more people buahaha :D

  • Man that drill instructor is a stupid motherfucker...you never taunt someone with a loaded weapon.

  • scary ass face

  • I was expecting to see a cloud of dust, some spider webs, and fluttering moths at 4:58.

  • lol That drill sergeant is a real complainer XD

  • @AETrainingDavid97 The drill sergeant made the serious error of forgetting the concept of (actual) force.

  • this was one of the reasons we couldnt bring weapon into the latrine at basic

  • Gomer Pyle's expression is what I/ others call the "Kubrick stare". It's used in this, The Shining, Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon.

  • I sure hope that if I'm ever shot to death I'm as badass as Hartman before I do so.

  • This movie is good for samples and such for some killer music!

  • Wow after the Drill sargent got shot if i was Pvt. Joker id be shittin my pants....try and out run the bullet...no friggin way.

  • BOOM 4:01 ....im sorry but that drill sergeant was a dick

  • @fullmetalkunai67 these guys have to be thats how they train soldiers

  • I love the bootcamp scene of that movie, but the whole "...hi....jo---ker" shit just shows me poor acting on that part.

  • During the draft could you choose what branch of the military you wanted or would they assign you to one?

  • @GunsOfThePhoenix

    Holy shit.

Guys, are you sure that oxygen is in the air?

  • this is one of the most shocking film moments i've ever seen

  • OMG, HIS FACE LOOKS DIABOLICAL! ALL HE NEEDS IS HORNS! WOW.....

  • It's so comfortable to know who will fight for us and who wont. I'll sleep better at night knowing that.

You think Hartman is bad? The hell are you going to do when your face to face with an enemy that want's to slit your throat? Run like little pussies? Or stick up for what you believe in?

Think about it!! @galbmw I'ts a MOVIE!! Sounds to me like you want a fund raiser for Beavers because they restrict the water flow.

You sir have never served a day in your life and you have no room to speak

  • @skii6868 both sides stick up for what they believe in. the sad truth about war and flag waving is that people are traind to kill people they have never met and it gets justified, when at the end of the day it's people defending an ideal or a patch of dirt that they don't own to begin with - not in the way that people think.

we're so embedded in our rituals and national pride that we lose sight of the fact that the greater we segregate mankind, the greater the conflicts.

  • Cruel Reality is that these things acctually hapen. either we admit it or not people do commit murders or do other things that are as bad. pyle was pushed over the limit. but the worst thing is that nobody seemed to care about it. thing is when a man goes mad you can definetly see it in his movement and talk. i know it's just a movie but it does happen and too bad for us there are people like hartmann who will push it over the edge.

  • I like how even when Pyle's gonna kill him Hartman,he still demeans Pyle.

  • if pyle were to get to nam, that war would hav been won by usa

  • man if someone like pyle made it to war and came out of it alive, they would be the craziest mother fucker on earth

  • ok drill instructors are hard on you but wow he pushed way to far

  • Did Pyle shoot himself or did he take such a huge shit that the back of his head blow open?

  • you cant treat humans the way hartman does

    they go crazy

  • lol

  • The more and more I look into pyle's eyes, I see an evil that paralyzes me. It's like he's no longer even human. God the acting in this movie was excellent.

  • @Heibon0Edakumi aw but its not acting my friend....

  • Pyles not evil he's crazy. Broken inside. The paradox of Pyle is that he shows that the 'break 'em down and build 'em up' style of military training makes soldiers, but can also make psychos. Pyle became both.

  • this is one on my favorite move scenes of all time. its so eerie, the look on Pyle's face is just haunting...epic!

  • @morgann529 He's an amazing actor, always has been.

  • i think hartman deserved what he got thank god it's not real it sure looked real

  • @stonecoldvid

I would have done the same thing.

  • "Hi, Joker!!" scares me like hell...

  • some people i know cant even watch this shit cuz that sort of stuff happened while they were servin

  • i was in the Navy, that's the way to go. More fun, more travel, same pay

  • And if they're gonna kill you, it's not going to be by boat anymore.

  • @bitterchew 'FUN' eh..?

  • Fashizze...I served in the Marine Corps at this time period. You were not drafted into the Corps, you had to enlist.

  • He had the same face like the figure from the original video game Doom! At least an old friend of mine told me this once... shame that he was not turned loose upon the Communists!

  • "7,52 Milimeters... Full Metal Jacket..."

  • 7.62...

  • Hiiii Joker. creepy

  • "I am in a world of shit!"---one of the best lines in the whole movie

  • WHAT IS THIS MICKEY MOUSE SHIT !!!!!

  • 1:07 - reminds me of another Stanley Kubrick film. I wonder....

  • That's the Kubrick Stare, which Kubrick used a lot in his movies. You can see it in Strangelove, The Shining and several other movies as well. ubrick himself wore it on sets several times.

  • funny how this was meant to be a sad and dramatic scene, yet most of u act as if this scene was the golden heart of the funny and hilarious in this movie...

  • 2 words an 2 words only, fukd up

  • Such a great, yet tragic scene.

  • pvt.paula is a good sniper

  • one of my favorite movie scenes

  • WHAT IS THIS MICKEY MOUSE SHIT !!!!!

  • what are you doing in my head!

  • Head is another term for toilet

  • It's interesting just how mechanical pyle is when he suicides.

  • Yes, he is a very good actor

  • 2:12 "I AM ..IN A WORLD ..OF SHIT!!!"

  • i always thought Pyle was crazy

  • drill sergeant was still telling him shit even with a loaded gun in his face. he wasnt scared of shit. he killed a good drill sergeant.

  • the drill instructor thought pyle didnt have it in him to shoot him..it's obvious hartman didnt know pyle was completely crazed by this point ..

  • hartman just thought pyle was angry at him ...but he was far beyond angry ..he was a far gone psycho

  • I think he was already a fucking psycho when he joined the marines. I see what your saying though. That or he lost his mind (if he had one) when he pissed of Hartman.

  • private pyle was slow // special when he was enlisted he went all out crazy from the harsh treatment from hartman

  • Good point.

  • So did private pyle die or did he just have some minor head injuries?

  • LOL

  • I'm pretty sure that Pyle died... people who have a 30 calibure 147 grain FMJ bullet shot from 7.62 x 51cartridge into their head at point blank range from a M1A rifle tend not to live afterward.

  • You Outta watch it putting a copyright symbol on video footage you do not own copyright to.

  • WHAT IS THIS MICKEY MOUSE SHIT ?!?!?!

  • The whole scene scared me when I was little.

  • God i love the rifle sound at 2:37

  • Comment removed

  • Annoying ? Hartman makes the movie

  • Yeah he was funny as fuck when he would insult the privates but past that he would just shout all the time and that was annoying.

  • I heard that they originally wanted Pyle to shoot Hartman in the head, like the boy at Kent State was in 1970, but it was too graphic. As for punishment, well, Pyle would have had to bury his rifle, and the entire platoon would have had to fall out for the funeral. He also had delusions about what Hartman really wanted with the rifle. Joker saw it coming and tried to warn Cowboy, but he wasn't interested.

  • FUCK THE ARMY!

  • does the drill instructor die?

  • sir, yes sir.

  • your joking? of course he does

  • what a pussy!

  • the drill instructer had that shit comin to him ..he put that man through hell ..leonards insanity was at the point of no return by this scene...and then he calls his bluff talkin shit ..then POW

  • ...it was part of the guys job...to teach american men to be strong....id love to have a drill instructor like Hartmen

  • that poor man lost his sanity because all the verbal abuse he went through ...plus it wasnt his fault he was slowminded and fat ...back in vietnam it was a draft and poor leanord had no chioce but to serve or serve 5 years in prison ..he should have been discharged when they saw he wasnt capable

  • ok drill instructors are ment 2 teach them how to be soilders and survive but he went too far he got what he deserved and hartman shouldn't of ingored pvt pyle crying after the towel party

  • Well, he wasn't training to be a soldier. He was training to be a Marine. I was a soldier, I volunteered. You are training to save your life and the lives of your buddies while executing your mission. There is no room for the weak. You have to be fit and trusted to do what is needed when the time is right...Bullets or no bullets. It is not a job for those without intestinal fortitude.

  • "Bullets or no bullets. It is not a job for those without intestinal fortitude."

Bullshit, Ermey who was a USMC drill instructor said in a TV interview that his role as Hartmann was to intimidate, intimidate and intimidate, all he did was intimidating the recruits. Ermey said that if anny gunny was so much of an SOB as Hartmann, he wouldn't have lived long enough to be killed by Pyle in the first place. Pyle was slightly mentally retarded and thus very prone to PTSD.

  • The only thing that Hartmann did to Pyle was bringing him to psychic breakdown before he had chance to see action. No offense but I wonder about your intestinal fortitude after being the gunny's punching bag for the whole camp (add to this that your IQ is average or above the average while Pyle was obviously retarded which is an important factor in PTSD and psychic breakdown in general).

  • US ARMY backwards - Yes My Retarded Ass Signed Up

  • @Xerock Too bad this is the marines.

  • ironic he trained pyle to be a brainwashed killer and thats what he got and it backfired..cost hartman his life

  • WHAT IS THIS MICKEY MOUSE SHIT!

  • crack ur neck in

  • that's not a fucking dream you fuckin idiots! you fuckin idiots how could you think it was a fuckin dream, you fuckin maniacs amaze me. goddamit i hate that kind of shit fuck shit fuck you make me mad!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Well, you make a convincing and well read case. I am finding it hard to find a gap in your ... rather passionate ...argument.

However, if someone were to read you a Shakespear sonnet you would probably not be suprised to find that there was more than one layer to it.

Kubrik is just as creative and subtle as these masters of their profession. Why would he not be able to have a multi layered artistic work?

  • well, i talked to many people who have seen this film, and asked them if it could really be a dream. it could perhaps be, but it's not necessarily a dream, like some wise people are trying to tell us here. some people just come here and tell them their own interpretation as a fact. if it's a dream there's some question you should answer. i think pyle and the other guy who got shot are the main characters in the movie besides the storyteller. how come they're never showed afterwards?

  • Some people will tell you their opinion as a fact and some people will tell you that you opinion is wrong as if it is a fact.

Hartman did not show up afterwards because they left the training base and went to Vietnam. Pyle did not show up because he was not stationed with Joker (neither were most of the other marines). I am sure that you noticed that Cowboy, Joker and Pyle continually change places in the bunk scenes - if not, Perhaps there is more going on than you realised?

  • ok, I admit, your arguments are more valid than mine. but how can you be so sure that it's a dream. is it official information from the director or is it your own interpretation?

  • Sorry , I thought I replied to this but my reply is not here.

It is not my personal interpretation. Look at "FULL METAL JACKET subliminal analysis pt 1 of 8 by Rob Ager"

I watched that, read his website and then watched the film again. Absolutely fascinating (and I could slap myself for missing some of it).

  • ok. thanks

  • and how come Kubrick has put indirect suggestions in the film that it wasn't a dream?

  • How come he put them in or what are they?

  • Ok. This is all getting too deep. So he is still in the marines but yet he has these twisted dreams? Crazy.

  • Kubrik was a very deep artist. If someone said a poem had an allegorical meaning nobody would bat an eyelid. Kubrik is doing the same thing here.

The dream sequence represents Joker's pysche. How the brain washing is affecting him (or not in this case).

  • lol murder-suicide

  • fucking nar nar dude

  • Are you not allowed to go to the restroom at night when you're in Marine basic training?

  • Yes but this is a dream sequence being had by Joker so it is slightly twisted.

Have a look at my comments a bit further down the page about what is really happening

  • yeah he does that face in a clockwork Orange and the Shining too

  • me sucky sucky me love u 2 much,i wont take long i.ll skip the 4play

  • Watching this scene makes me wonder; are things like this at all even remotely common?

  • It is a dream sequence being had by Joker ("What are you animals doing in my HEAD?").

Pyle represents his innocence and Hartman the military brainwashing. He loses his innocence but does not surcome to the brainwashing.

This is why later on he is not as savage as the other marines and volunteers for non violent duty as a journalist.

  • .........Am I getting this right? Pyle doesn't kill himself? or am I just completely overthinking this?

  • It is always difficult to figure out how much directors actually put into things and how much people read into things.

However one of the guys I teach sword fighting to has worked with Kubrick on eyes wide shut and apparently he was a maniac for details and subtle themes.

Pyle does not kill himself or Hartman. In the same way Pyle is not given a blanket party (another dream sequence where Joker's innocence is attacked).

  • "head" is a military and nautical term for bathroom. that's why he says that. it has nothing to do with a dream

  • Comment removed

  • I am aware that head means the bathroom.

It has everything to do with the dream sequence. It is just one of the hints that Kubrick drops. This is the clever thing he has done here, he is telling two films at once. One of which is what you see and the other is hidden.

  • k, touche

  • If that's a dream, they why not was the whole movie a dream and Joker wakes up as Jane Fonda?

Unless there are clues, then the audience should accept every thing in a movie as "Real", in the movie. If not, the audience has to second guess everything.

  • Absolutely right (apart from the bit about Joker being Jane Fonda).

Luckily, Kubrik put several clues in this scene and many others that things are not what they might first appear to be in this film.

  • Am i the only one who's freaked out about the stare on gomer's fucking face at .... well, basicly throughout the whole damn scene !

  • 7.62 mm Full metal Jacket

  • that was a random thumbs down for you, FluffyOpossum. lol.

  • lol why?:( T_T

  • wew "Pvt Gomer Pyle" Is Really In The World Of Shit Cause Hes in The Bathroom ehehhe^^

  • Poor Pyle...because of all the humiliation and torture Pyle received from Hartman, he lost his sanity.

  • haha, "what is this mickey mouse shit!?"

  • WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR MALFUNCTION NUMBNUTS.. DIDN'T YOUR MOMMY AND DADDY LOVE YOU ENOUGH WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD?

    *BANG*

Lol, even in the face of death, Hartman is a tough ass.

  • Wow grow up..you must be about 12.

  • hahahaha

  • Great movie, shows what brain washing can do to some people 762mm full metal jacket bang your dead! the real Gomer Pyle.

  • What is your major malfunction, Numb nuts!? Didn't mommy and daddy show you enough attention when you were a child?!

  • This is just what Hartman was trying to do - turn Private Pyle into a killer. Job accomplished, Mr. Hartman!

  • for about 10 secs:P

  • hello my name is private pyle and i like to suck donkey cock and my partner does too....

  • 0300, Infantry. You MADE it!

  • One of the best movies my eyes have seen.!

  • how the hell did pyle get passed the phycholigical screening

  • I've seen crazier recruits than this guy pass the pstch test. That is one reason why I am thankful extra precautions are taken in basic training today

  • You're correct. One thing about basic training, If you got any issues they're going to surface.

  • It's amazing how fat and flabby Vincent D'Onorfio looked in this movie, then he was totally buff and ripped when he played Thor in "Adventures in Babysitting", which was made a year after FMJ.

  • m14. very cool weapon. the m21 (m14 sniper edition) is still being used today

  • Did something like this actually happen? Something needs to be done if the cadet looks unsafe like that.

  • You can't sneak a 5.56 of the range these days. Every shell is accounted for way before you march back to barracks

  • r lee is the man..

kubrick allowed him to write his own script for the movie.. he was so on point because he was in the nam war and a real drill sergeant .

  • Drill instructor, the Marines have Drill instructors, the Army has Drill Sergeants.

  • Call me crazy but it made me mad when Pyle shot R.Lee...I liked him myself.

  • that was cute

  • Some men, just can not take this kind of military pressure. They go insane.Good movie, with outstanding directing.

  • I hope that isn't me. I'm gonna head out to the marines after I get my asthma under control. I'm shooting for 3 months from now. Although I wouldn't mind being called private pile.

  • whyd he kill himself on the LAST night!?!?!?!?!?!?! poor gunny. just doing his job

  • Because it was a loss for him in the end anyway the way he saw it. He was assigned an infantry MOS, so after all that improvement and struggle in bootcamp, he would go off to Vietnam and die anyway. Life expectancy for a Marine grunt in Vietnam was around 3 weeks or so.
