Very, very interesting. I have a theory that the only reason why the Nazi holocaust is beaten into our heads starting in the 3rd grade (as opposed to other massacres and genocides) is all because of the USA's relationship with Israel. They think if we're religiously taught about the suffering of the Jewish people we'll be more favorable to US policy favoring Israel. Many, many thanks to Dr. Finkelstein for confirming this.
While I realise its quite a while since your comment Ithink your probably correct. I would though encourage schools to make films like Schindlers List compulsory for school as an example of runnaway power and what can happen in a society which allows extremists into power. I agree with your view and am becoming increasingly angry to see so many supporters of Israel using the Holocaust to justify their actions. It does a terrible injustice to those who suffered, to be used as ammunition.
Yes there should be schindlers lists...but just as many films about rwanda, and the armenian genocide, what stalin did to his people, what the Boers did in south Africa, what Europeans did to the natives...Im becoming less and less convinced that the deaths and experiences during the holocaust were any more hideous than the multitude of other atrocities perpetrated throughout history. No reason why that has to be sole camp fire we all gather round. I think its blinding us to Israels crimes.
Schindler´s list is based on a novel, that explicitly stated it was fictious. However, the later editions of the book no longer have that crucial hint.
