Everyone knows this is Benko Dixieland....I like this one better than Acker Bilk, everyone has their own taste of music just like I like Dave Coz much more than Kenny G.It's not because they are better than the others but because they have their own colour...and this is my colour.
THe great ones always make it look easy. This is a tune that my sister, now deceased, spent many hours enjoying. THANK YOU for bringing it to YOUTUBE.
@KiyoKenshin Can YOU play like that with your correct embochure? His embochure is all crooked to the side and he puffs up the cheeks.. But eh WROTE the freaking beautiful song. Give me a break.
I have no argument with your views vis-a-vis Benko's unorthodox embouchure, however I must take issue with your attributing the authorship of: " Stranger on the Shore ", to Benko." Stranger on the Shore ", was in fact composed by the English clarinetist : Acker Bilk, in 1962, as the sound track to a TV series of the same name.
Acker Bilk's 1962 version, remained on the British Pop Charts, for an amazing 55 weeks! "Stranger on the Shore" was the title track on the album.
@QUANTUMLORD18 Don't you think it's interesting how most clarinet players use "Strangers on the Shore" as their bench mark for how well they THINK they're doing or to signify their "arival" as a clarinetist. As beautiful as this music is it is only a grade 3 piece and an extremely over worked piece by would-be clarinetists :)
@marksp There's no need to get so prissy about it. I well understand that he wrote the song, and has his leave to do whatever he wants with his playing! I was just expressing my dismay at improper embrochure.
Oh, and by the way, I can play the clarinet quite well, thank you very much.
I think "improper" is an "improper" word to define his embouchure. An embouchure is defined by how it effects a musicians range, tone, and endurance. This man has no problem with any of those three. I think his embouchure is just fine...
yeah to get that tone if you notice he has it slightly off center, is probably using a loose ligature to let it vibrate, and instead of keeping his cheeks..non-puffy(?) he is obviously swelling them and loosening his mouth.
I use to play a clarinet in my school band and only wish I could have been this good. This is great and I guess to enjoy the sound and appreciate it you had to have been born back when the Big Band Sounds were popular and they had real music.
He's using an Ohler system clarinet so he can play in tune easier while playing with an obnoxious tone. He is playing with this tone on purpose(which is apparant from his mouthpiece position, slightly off center) He is infact trying his hardest NOT to sound like a clarinet while still having that clarinet feel. It's a brilliant display of musicianship and only a true professional could pull it off with as much style and feeling as he managed.
It doesn't look like an A clarinet to me, but the key system looks different. Also, I see he is using a primitive style ligature; a looooong piece of string wound around the mpc many many times. Geez, that's gotta be high maintenance. I would guess he started out with that one and didn't want to change.
Holy Shit,..just freaking shoot me. I cant stand these idiots,...(yes you cycling2005) that want to tell everyone how great they are by cutting down true artists. Well I dont see any material by you on youtube! If you dont like it, move on. Im a musician, and would love to play with these guys. A great sentimental song! only an arrogant know-it-all, loser would find fault in this tune and the way its played. Get a life!

Not as easy as it looks? You must not play clarinet much. When I was in high school, nearly every clarinet player played this by heart. And with feeling! It's really easy. Geez. Why do some people insist that things are harder than they really are. What a psych job.
I'm a clarinet player and someday I'd really, really like to play the way he does. With passion, emotion, commitment and motivation. You can feel and hear that with all his music. BTW Its not as easy as it looks.
he seems to be playing out of the corner of his mouth, witch is odd. but its nice to see he's attached his reed with a tie rather than the metal grasp.

In my humble opinion this is not great clarinet playing. Muffled tone, notes cut short. This is not a hard song to play.
