Man, that's a tremendous amount of work. You saved an absolutely fortune by not going to the dealer to do that. Good work! If you're going to own an Audi, Mercedes or BMW, it's best that you also learn how to work on one. Thanks for sharing this video.
Did your A4 ever have a problem with oil sludge? I was thinking of getting one of these cars, but I heard lots of these cars get it ... or were there any other severe problems?
@INumba1Stunna If you use Amsoil you should not have any issues with Sludge. I just ordered it for both of my Audi's to prevent sludge. The dealer will sell you what will make them the most money. Trust a dealer or quick lube like you trust a banker. Neither of them are your friends.
@INumba1Stunna sludge is a problem if you dont use full synthetic and its mandatory you do 5k miles between changing it on the 1.8t. Im overdue and still havnt had any problems. cars also a bit notorious for ruining cv joints quickly for some reason otherwise its a good car if you get a stick shift
I just bought an 01' A4 Avant and it is due for the TB & WP change. Wow, what a job! This makes me want to attack it myself. I like to get an intimate knowledge of a car I plan to keep. Thanks man!
@AcidGlow524 you gotta feel bad for these little kids who come on here to post these remarks to feel tough, because it's the only place these skinny little idiots can do it without getting their ass' kicked.
@Jacksonjames4 - You're just mad that apparently a "skinny little idiot" knew the correct title of how the camera is sped up aka "high speed" vs "time lapse". -- You sir,(or ma'am) should have your arse kicked for defending the title of the video by the uploader. @ThuGfunk 100k some people even do it later. But once your in there, you might as well change other things, like belts and water pump. etc. i bought my car without dealing with this problem. Its been done lol
Ugh, my '99 1.8T needs this done. I can't do this myself though, I'll be paying someone to get it done. Haha you work in a Proto jersey? It took me a second to realize it, then I looked at your screen name and I was like "Oh, that explains it!"
@stfu192 BMW's are just as if not more expensive to repair than Audi's/Vw's. BMW's are RWD so they probably need the exact same thing done to them whenever they need any service such as a timing belt. Not sure if BMW's use Chains or belts tho. Either way your still not winning with an Audi or BMW.
Thanks for the video.. watched it once and did the job with no problems! was my first time doing a belt on a A4... this made it very simple and quick!! THANKS!
my freind said timing belt changes are scams, untill his snapped and the engine had a seizure. ahahahahah well now hes on the hunt for a new engine...
I found your vidio is extremely useful. I wonder if you have a slow vision that may teach me how to my timing belt for 2004 Audi A6 3.0 V6 engine. Thanks a lot!
Audi have some great technical solutions, but had to change the steering rack on my 98 Passat (which is build on the same platform as the A4) a couple of years ago. It's located above the transmission, so the whole engine, gearbox and front suspension had to be dropped out of the car.... A lot of unnecessary work.
i just did this exact same thing a few weeks ago...on a 2000 1.8T the water pump isn't timing belt driven , it shares a V-belt with the power steering pump...alot of work
I didnt see a crank lock tool in there? or a cam locking pin?
I did my 53 1.9tdi this weekend and yeh your right it was easy! the hardest bit was getting the bumper off because I'd undone the 6mm allens that hold it on too far! First time for me though and it was 4 hours start to finish.
My '04 A4 is sitting in the garage with the same problem, as I'm watching this video!
There's No way I can do that w/o fucking it up even more... And I have about 3-4 more weeks left before I hit that $1200 saved, JUST to get it fixed... FML and This Car! Lol nothing but mechanical problems since I bought it
-- Imagine if you messed up the timing and you had to do it again ...
I think AUDI engine is interference engine , so if you did not install it corectly it will mess up your valves , That is why you have to turn crankshaft 360 degrees to see if it moving freely ... before you crank it ...
@aviomaster I dont know about the interference part. I know its got hydraulic tappets but im not sure how much that has to do with it. You mean 720 degrees.. ;)
hey I was confused about marking the timings. Basically align the cam sprocket to the valve cover line and then align the crankshaft sprocket and then take the belt out?
@blackwolfsquadron You dont have to pull the front of the car off, Just slide it forward into service position. Or if your good enough you can do it without moving or removing anything at all. I can do one of these belts in 1.5 hours and not moving anything on the front
@jlmcdermond I have 10 years Audi experience and have done countless Tbelts, After a while you get bored and try different things, Like the V6 twin turbo belt without moving the front end lol. My time is worth AU$150 an hour, but im no longer in the industry.
@blackwolfsquadron Yes you have to remove the whole front , but you can take it to the garage and pay the price because the job has a lot of labour and requires more time which make the whole thing expensive , thas why I do my own timing belt , the secret is to understand engine timing, you can get that online or by textbooks for Motor Vehicle Technology , you can do it !!!!!!
Do you half to get the timing chain out in order to get the timing belt out..Because let me tell you that you"re moving pretty quick right there so!!..Please answer my friend!!
Stupid German cars!! Oh man, can't believe I was thinking about buying this kind of car.... I'll stick to Lexus, classy , yet easy to work on. The '98 to '06 GS300 timing belt can be done in 2.5 hrs !
The space it takes to remove a timing belt is usually limited. It's pretty tight in there even with being an L4. most modern cars you have to do that. Most older cars as well. It's why I'm a fan of chains as opposed to belts. Luckily the belt only has to go around one cam gear as opposed to two.
This guy is a spanner!! you dont have to take the front completely off, its easier to let the front hang forward on the lower mount, he had to degass the aircon, piss coolant and PAS out everywhere. . .what a mess, the front bumpers are a bi-atch to get off and never come off as easy as that ^_^
Nice video. Audi is a fucking retard car company. It shows their engineers are clueless designing a car like this without any thoughts to easy maintenance.
thats the correct way to do it..but ive seen someone do it in 2.5 hours.. he did it like you but without taking off the bumper.. cuz he didnt change the cam and crank seal. thats why he didnt take off the bumper. but no need to take off the bumper
Why not make the engine with chains to have to take the whole car apart to do that required work is insane. Guess that why you don't see to many old audi's when they break the belt take the turbo and exhaust valves with it then it get junked right.
In the process of doing this on my A4. Its easy if you know what your doing also feels good to save hundreds in labor costs. To anyone who is even thinking of getting a B5 Passat or A4 1.8T - timing belt service is of utmost priority.
yea changing the belt is a pain on any car but more than likely ull only ever change it once unless you change cams. but he also did a radiator flush water pump belt tensioner it would take a day if you have never worked on the car going by the book get a buddy involved and some 1 who knows what they r doing and its cake. the car is still worth buying to me but I LIKE working on my car and dont complain about a maybe once in the duration of ownership job.
ok, so what is the service life for the timing chain, and how often should you actually change it? I'm looking into 99 1.8t's with around 80-105k on them.
My Haynes manual says there's a way to take off the entire front end from the radiator foreward, then just have to pull the hoses and wires attaching them, making it all come off in one asembly. I'll let you know how it goes when I replace mine in a week or 2... also mounting an aftermarket intercooler and swapping the water pump all at the same time.
No, the 1.8T you do not need any special tools unlike the V6 where you need the cam bar and crank lock. As someone said before, if you arent doing the crank seal, then you can have these done in an hour, as you only need to put the lock carrier in service position and not remove the whole thing.
Are you serious? You honestly have to take off the whole front end off of this car to replace the timing belt? I thought some cars were tough, but this takes the cake.
The timing belt is facing the radiator. Because the tranny setup is like a rear wheel drive car. so the crank will be vertical with the car. Not horizontal like a front wheel drive car such as the passat.
My great uncle has a saying for audi's he says that they are amazing cars to own new, but as soon as the get on age and they have not been looked after they are best to avoid. Audi/ w made them so they are hard to service so you would pay more to have it serviced. I own a couple jettas and to me they are amzing i got a diesel and a gas turbo and the mk2 jettas are awesome, parts are cheap and mechanically they are simple and easy to work on. Just a thought
FYI: The audi and VW 1.8T timing belt procedures are basically the same...because they are the same engines. It just depends on if it is transverse mounted or inline. If your uncle says audi are bad as soon as the get some age then so are VW's. I have done a plethora timing belts on both Audi's and VW and can tell you there is no real difference if you know what you are doing and where to source parts. I have over 400k miles combined in 2 personal vehicles (02 jetta TDi and 02 TT).
cool yah the same wth the diesels we have over half a million km on them combined. I have not done any timing belts on any newer transverse mounted 1.8t's like on the passat or the a4, but i have done timing belts on the longitudinally mounted 1.8t as well as the diesels. Sadly my lack of experience dealing with those engines leaves me to quote my great uncle. My uncle actually says that if they are not taken care of the start to be a head ache, but thats any car right? Thanks for the FYI :D
my prefered way to do this is to simply unbolt the front panel, screw threaded bars into one bolt hole on each side then slide the assembly forward giving just enough access without having to drain coolant or disconnect anything. just a suggestion.
not neccisarily. put drip tray under car, strip down belt etc n remove pump, coolant drains from the block then fit new pump and carry on as normal. ive done loads n the front end pulls forward to easily allow access. each to their own though
Great video, fantastic and very helpful in understanding what is required to change the belt. How can i tell when timing belt needs changing if i am buying used audi a4 ? Is there anything i can look for apart from service history?
I own an audi and have done my timing belt before, but this song is fucking epic cant find it anywhere else but here. On my favorites list :)

awesome video. But all that to replace a timing belt. What a headache.
cesar333 2 years ago 3
ok, so what is the service life for the timing chain, and how often should you actually change it? I'm looking into 99 1.8t's with around 80-105k on them.
enigma02g 2 years ago
for A4s, i heard 120 000kms. thatd be like 75000miles. dont quote me on this but this'd be a SAFE time to start looking into it

i heard the 2000 -2004's are a bit better. they have more HP

I am so glad I saw this, I was thinking of getting this car. Now I will think twice, although all cars will have there quirks

All done! Oops, I forgot to put the new crank seal in, lol...

how much did it cost you to get a new timing belt?
giadalover 2 years ago
Do you need any special tools for the T-belt change? (Like you need the special hex for the Rear Diff Flush on AWD A4s)
duderseb 2 years ago
No, the 1.8T you do not need any special tools unlike the V6 where you need the cam bar and crank lock. As someone said before, if you arent doing the crank seal, then you can have these done in an hour, as you only need to put the lock carrier in service position and not remove the whole thing.
guiness810 2 years ago
Thats cool, and what music was that?
YUSTMIKE 2 years ago
do these belts in an hour tops, undo the front end and just slide it forward no need to drop the whole front off unless yr removing the engine!!
ttttrant01 2 years ago
Yeah, many folks don't read the bentey manual to know that there is a service mode for the front end.
chevy1461 2 years ago
Do you know if its as easy with the B5 audi S4? or do you really have to get the Cam holder tool>?

props man

Thats not a passat guys, look at the front end. Its an A4.
bokbok454 3 years ago
Are you serious? You honestly have to take off the whole front end off of this car to replace the timing belt? I thought some cars were tough, but this takes the cake.
pantera132 3 years ago
its the same with the volkwagen passat too
escortbadboy1987 3 years ago
I thought the passat is front wheel drive. wouldnt the timing belt be facing one of the fenders...
pantera132 3 years ago
so is the audi. they're almost the same. the v6 is worse than this
aleks138 2 years ago
The timing belt is facing the radiator. Because the tranny setup is like a rear wheel drive car. so the crank will be vertical with the car. Not horizontal like a front wheel drive car such as the passat.
pantera132 2 years ago
passat engine is also longitudinal as is the fwd a4...
kingofjerks 2 years ago
@pantera132 it's not "vertical", you retarded monkey....it's "longitudinal"

So, besides the timing belt issue, is this car worth having? Or are there mechanical gremlins that haunt this car?
Agent92 3 years ago
any car with a timing belt needs replacing, they dont last forever.

Just a thought
ljguy300 2 years ago
FYI: The audi and VW 1.8T timing belt procedures are basically the same...because they are the same engines. It just depends on if it is transverse mounted or inline. If your uncle says audi are bad as soon as the get some age then so are VW's. I have done a plethora timing belts on both Audi's and VW and can tell you there is no real difference if you know what you are doing and where to source parts. I have over 400k miles combined in 2 personal vehicles (02 jetta TDi and 02 TT).
eolle43 2 years ago
cool yah the same wth the diesels we have over half a million km on them combined. Thanks for the FYI :D

my prefered way to do this is to simply unbolt the front panel, screw threaded bars into one bolt hole on each side then slide the assembly forward giving just enough access without having to drain coolant or disconnect anything. just a suggestion.
dinatarkteruz 3 years ago
you still need to change the water pump, so antifreeze still needs to be drained.
tgpboy 3 years ago
not neccisarily. put drip tray under car, strip down belt etc n remove pump, coolant drains from the block then fit new pump and carry on as normal. ive done loads n the front end pulls forward to easily allow access. each to their own though

effin amazing.

Great video, fantastic and very helpful in understanding what is required to change the belt. How can i tell when timing belt needs changing if i am buying used audi a4 ? Is there anything i can look for apart from service history?
