So the Scots (or if you look further back, the Picts) had sworn fealty to the King of England and never honored it. Now they're claiming their independence (yet again!).
I suppose the Scots will never change, and the English never learn.
Sad to say that the Scots fought battles for the English for hundreds of years and are still doing so today. Where is our righteous indignation at being used as cannon fodder by the Engerlish?
Im not French but a student of history. The criticisms and put downs on this site are absolute gold. They reflect a very deliberate propaganda involving the perversion of the real history of the Scots French relationship.
England was absolutely successful in brainwashing Scotland after destroying the clan system and the "clearings"
Add a little psychopathic protestantism and you break the real Scottish back. I mean modern sectarianism aside why are there so many Scottish Catholics abroad?
@MacMaraScott Whos stupid? many of the greatest Scots nobles are buried in Navarre (like Scotland and extinct kingdom). Protected long after their money ran out by fierce Basques in their mountain fortresses. They gave shelter from mercenaries and English hired hitmen sent to eliminate their families. This is a great show but have you noticed that besides the presenter everybody that is a Scots clan leader and noble has an English toff public school accent?
@mcnailler93G Actually, Longshanks didn't meet his match in Wallace. Wallace only had success when Edward was on the Continent fighting the French and the Scots only had to deal with Longshanks' representatives. Once Edward himself marched to Scotland Wallace was beaten, his reputation at the time destroyed and Scotland conquered for the second time. The Leopard of England was a cut above everyone at that time as a warrior and a general, Wallace came closest to besting him but still failed.
@Lachausis Point remains, however, that Wallace wasn't a match for Longshanks and after Falkirk the English King, and the Red Comyn's victory at Roslin, went on to force the Scots to peace terms, a peace which remained unbroken until the Bruce the killed the Red Comyn at Dumfries. Edward I was the legal Overlord of Scotland, accepted by treaty and enforced by arms. At least twice Longshanks forced the Scots to accept his position as Overlord as righful and lawful.
@11nytram11 "Rightful and lawful" is far stretched term, but those were different times, when only the opinion of the nobles was legitimate. Nobody ever asked the commoners. Wallace wasn't a match for the English army in the first place. The Scots lacked basically every type of soldier compared to the English. Only their anti-cavalry warfare was better. But cavalry and archers were petty. Of course Wallace hadn't had the necessary experience, whereas the English king knew everything about war.
@Lachausis And the English King was prepared to adapt new techniques, ideas and weaponry into his army. Longshanks was always on the look out for anything that could improve the effectiveness of his war machine and trying to predict the actions of a man with such a progressive military mind as him was an extremely difficult task. Wallace chose tactics that would have given him victory at Falkirk against any other English commander but Longshanks marched to a different tune.
@DrKorn5 you see it all the way to the sacking and massacre of Delhi in response to crushing of the rebellion of 1857(termed first war of indipendence in India)
incredible stuff, edwards enemy was france but he's royal house was Plantagenet, which is a branche of a house of anjou, which is french...history is really fucked up
also because they had no unified ruler like in England...they were scatterd into local barons and land lords, which were at war with eachother as much as anyone ealse....so geting an army together of any kind would be a long shot...let alone sail to Scotland or England

Edward I, was interesting man. But he met his match in William Wallace!!
mcnailler93G 2 years ago 2
@mcnailler93G actually he had wallace executed.
Laranzava 1 year ago
@Laranzava, I'm aware of that. But that is not what I meant.
What I meant was, their intelligence and cunning and their positions as leaders in battle of the two opposing armies/countries.
mcnailler93G 1 year ago
@mcnailler93G well i guess i'd have to agree with you then.
