  • Even reading the title makes me cry

  • The reason why you were crying is because this is not a Miyazaki film. Miyazaki is a happy guy while basically his friend Isaiah Takahata is completely different. This film was amazing.

  • Naruto is waay better!

  • Great review!

  • Top notch review of a top notch (incredibly sad) film - thanks...

  • hey, great review ! (:

i just watched this before... now am constantly reading/watching reviews... !

everyone you said was spot on.

  • Really Excellent review! I feel the honesty in your voice, the tone. Your review did this amazing film justice.

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the greatest films of all time I believe. I can't imagine any film being more depressing than this. So many truths about life, how we treat each other, and of course war, are laid down here.

    The truth hurts.

    This film is pure truth.

I just wish there were more films like this.

I wist everyone could see this film, the world would be better for it.

  • you should watch

"Barefoot Gen" the anime and the live-action.

oh yeah! watch "Barefoot Gen 2" too

  • Hey can anyone tell me if there are any good free anime movies on YouTube like grave of the fireflies? Or any other website that has good ones?

  • Amen

  • When I watched the movie I started sobbing when those pretty girls in nice dresses said "oh, it's so good to be home," and started giggling.

  • Good review of a must be classic film, the saddest film I have ever seen, grabs your heart and rips it in 2, that said you have to see it.

  • great review, I was moved to tears.. and even now, years after seeing the movie, when I go to explain the movie to people, I have to stop myself from crying.. it's a powerful movie.

  • No matter who you are it's so hard not to get tears in your eyes when you just think about this movie, it so heart-wrenching and depressing that I am trying to hold back tears while writing this since I just finished watching the movie and just bawled at the ending. Oh, and if you watch the movie at the end watch the first scene and I bet you, you can not help but be emotional once you truly understand what just happened.

  • this movie is so powerful... not matter who you are, you will definitely cry during the movie, and war really is bad.. during the vietnam war i lost my grandpa and my grandpa had to struggle, but japan is far much worse then vietnam.. war is just bad.

    great review btw.

  • I have not seen this movie yet (great review by the way) I have noticed that almost anyone who reviews this gets a lump in their throat when talking about it. I think that, that is a sign of how powerful this movie is.

  • Fantastic review I have to say, you hit all of the main points that I would have.

Personally I think this is the best work Studio Ghibli has ever produced, definitely the most powerful and relevant in any case. I do enjoy Miyazaki's escapism too.

  • @King0Jingaling You know what kills me? The same dude who made this movie made "Only Yesterday", which I hear is the exact opposite in terms of emotions. Whereas GotF was soul-crushingly sad, "Only Yesterday" is supposed to be uplifting. The sad thing is that it hasn't been released in the United States at all, so I've only seen clips on youtube of it.

  • @CliffM85

I haven't seen that one, but I have seen 'My Neighbours the Yamada's' which is GENUINELY hilarious, it's intimate like Grave but in a very different, really cosy feeling sort of way. Even though it's dealing with Japanese family values Takahata's down to earth style still made it work perfectly for me. It's my second favourite Ghibli film!

  • Paddy cap! And i love this film

  • Its not just about war.. You dont have to be at war for this to happen. But I understand

  • oh geez, the Boy Died? im still looking forward to watching it -.-

  • Comment removed

  • Although it's a Studio Ghibli film, it's directed by Isao Takahata, not Miyazaki.

  • @MOONFACEx2 Oh, I know. The style is completely different. Miyazaki tends to focus on the small nonessential activities going on in a scene (drawing an old bottle in a running stream) whereas Takahata seems to be more focused on how the human body moves (the little girl removing her clothing before going swimming). One has a focus on fantasy while the other focuses on reality.

  • "Get some tissues before you see the film"

Wow, I wish I had someone tell me that BEFORE I watched it. D:

  • it was very hard for me to finsh watching this film because of all the hard times in Japan with the innocent people.

  • hi. I watched this movie just once, and towards the end you just can't stop crying. One of the best movies ever made. I don't think I would watch it again I'll probably cry even harder haha this happened to me when I watch the dorama 1 litter of tears for the second time haha it was crazy. Anyway Take care!

  • yea i saw the begeining of this anime n i wanted to finsih it but it got depressing i need to finsish it but damn i know im be crying lol good reveiw

  • yea i saw the begeining of this anime n i wanted to finsih it but it got depressing i need to finsish it but damn i know im be crying lol

  • Saw it last night, and order the tin this morning. Hope it tastes good.

  • @drdos4 They're actually strong candies. Very very fruity, though they oddly have chocolate flavor and mint flavor mixed in as well.

  • @CliffM85

Have you tried the thing in the movie where they make candy soup? Does that end up being good?

  • @drdos4 Actually, yes. It's very very lightly flavored since you're mainly getting powdered sugar and small bits of the fruit drops. It kinda makes the whole scene a bit more depressing, since you kinda have to try to taste the fruit in it.

  • My grandmother was in Kobe during World War Two. She was a little school girl who had to skip 5th grade to grow potatoes in the school yard. They would feed the children the leaves of the potatoes so that they can wait for the potatoes to grow. She survived many firebomb raids just like in the movie. This movie gives me a visual reference to a real life family story. I'm just fortunate that my grandmother survived unlike Setsuko.

  • Great review man ^^ I just watched this movie today and it made me cry so much that I couldnt even see the last parts of the film because of the tears in my eyes..

  • 4 years ago i bought the DVD and thought I would enjoy the movie, but it turned out that the first 5 mins of the movie already made me sobbing so badly and not able to continue watching; but after watching your review now I've decided to dig the disc out and finish the whole movie tomorrow.

  • @szezone You might want to watch it in installments then, it only gets worse and worse from there.

  • one of the best review and agian one of the best film ever made.. thanks

  • @guysan Thank you. :)

  • this was the most heartbreaking movie I have ever seen, I cry everytime I watch it. Great job on your review

  • @wolfalchemistofmoon Samee.....:'(

  • this is one of my most favorite movies ...

  • Don't really know what to say. :(

Though you can get a tin of the candies from the movie. Ordered one online, going to make a video of it. Also found the star candies from "Spirited Away".
