I don't get it. If this Tylenol ingredient is so harmful to the liver, then WTF is it doing in about every effective pain killer. Screw the opium facter, so that's addictive?! Only mildly, but liver damage is one hell of a BIG issue. Anyone here feel priorities are confused?
@JaniceParton It's purpose is to kill you if you ever dare to take too much of your pain meds. Most governments today would rather have people dead or screaming in pain than let anyone get high. It's the same principal as the US government adding methanol, formaldehyde, chloroform, mercury salts and other poisons to industrial ethanol, which killed 10,000 people during the prohibition era. Policy makers knew that people would die, and they were fine with it.
@Peter5930 Thank you for confirming my suspisions. Our governments today have become montrous overlords. Is the population of the world just one huge lab experiment? I know the US government slowly poisoning its ppl. Thus, more cancer, more debilitateing pain, more depression... but no no no, how dare we ask for effective pain meds. So now they are in the process of removing them from this country. Of course the need for them is increasing because population is exploding.
@wheely132 that would be 2275mg a day. 4000mg is the daily limit. But I don't know what the effects are of taking acetaminophen regularly for a long period of time. I've been using a lot of drugs, including acetaminophen, for pain since late 2004. I know it's a bad habit, but I haven't found any other coping methods. I've seen a lot of doctors who don't know and don't care.
Our government is so backwards. They allow poisons like acetaminophen to be freely sold in stores which can severely damage your liver and does almost nothing for pain relief, and keep helpful stuff like oxycodone locked up tight. Doctors can't even prescribe oxycodone to help people with pain because the DEA will show up at their door the next day accusing them of drug dealing. Sure, there is a risk of addiction with oxycodone, but there is with alcohol also and its sold everywhere.

@soulscor that was the dumbest question ive herd in my life yea u shouldent be taking more then 20 pills of anythin cause 20 pills of anything will kill u dummy
no probs, glad to put your mind at ease, I personally find pharmacy and pharmacology fascinating, so I have read up a lot about certain drugs and in the process discovered that the liver is quite robust......but it only is if you have a few days off here and there, to give it a chance to process the drug and recover from the extra strain. My mother is also a nurse and she works in the liver ward in the hospital, so i know a few things. PM me if you want to know more. x
no. but I think you should have a break every now and again (if you can) to give your liver the chance to cope. But I personally think you'll be fine as long as you are not taking more than 2x500mgs 4 times a day. I just think your liver will be working a bit harder because of it. It certainly wont be destroyed.
I just got out of the hospital with an acetaminophen overdose. My liver enzymes were at 2700 when they should normally be between 30-80....I have 2 rounds of the antidote, acetadote, that stuff is painful. I had an allergic reaction to it so I had to be given IV benadryl plus IV dilaudid just to get through the first set of the 3 bags then again when poison control said i needed a second round. 9 days in a hospital bed, 2 rounds of antidote and outta my mind drugged up with Dilaudid, not fun!
How many people die each year from liver or kidney damage because of chronic use of NSAID drugs ? I have heard it may be as high as 20,000 per year , but I don't know where that number comes from . I do know a bunch die from gastrointestinal bleeding due to using Tylenol and Ibuprofen .
You people that take these " medicines " are a bunch of idiots, They are not meant to help you, You don't even know how it works its so sad....You'r all weak
Paracetamol/acetaminophen should really just be used for bringing down someones temperature, as its painkilling properties are shit, and it is ridiculous that doctors in the uk prescribe that with codeine, which in turn is MORE intoxicating than codeine on its own as the mixture of the two has is worse. If you forget theat you have taken a dose and you take one dose too many, and you are on this pain releif long term, what happens if you make this mistake regularly? Paracetamol is dangerous
why they put this poison in regular headache pills is beyond me,narcotics like codeine are far safer, its worst side affect of coarse would be addiction...
codiene in excess is dangerous as well. if you are a dummy and can't stay within the dosage guidelines then u need to have your mommy give it to you or not take it at all.
I took tylenol PM every night last year from sept-may to help me sleep. 2 tablets contain 500 mg of acetaminophen each. I didn't know this could kill me...I will def stop using ANYTHING with this ingredient in it. just threw the bottle away.
You can get toxicity with less than 4 grams per day. Newer studies are showing this depending on the person. If you're at a point where you're taking 4g per day..chances are you need something else for pain relief.
Treatment of a serious paracetamol overdose is mainly by administration of an antidote which can prevent the toxic effects of the overdose. This must be done early, ideally within 12 hours of the overdose although it can still be beneficial up to 24 hours or even later.Treatment must be supervised in a hospital. It is important that if a paracetamol overdose is suspected, hospital treatment is sought without delay.
The overdose threshold may be lowered in a person taking certain prescription medicines, or a person who is an alcoholic or is seriously undernourished. (The recommended maximum dose in a 24 hour period is 4g or 8 tablets). There are often no symptoms in the first 24 hours following overdose, although there may be mild nausea and vomiting. In a large overdose liver function deteriorates leading to jaundice, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Death is rare due to liver failure.
Research shows that the common threshold for liver damage to occur from a single paracetamol overdose is 15 gms (30 tablets) although standard hospital guidelines allow an extra safety margin and assume liver damage could occur at a single overdose of 24 standard tablets or 150 mg/kg body weight, whichever is the smaller.
As long as people keep in mind you're talking about a SINGLE large dose as opposed to multiple doses over period of time
The body can recover from single large overdose of some compounds while sustaining permanent, sometimes fatal damage from repeated much smaller doses
Quite a few recent studies (that I consider objective and scientifically valid) suggest 4000mg/day of acetaminophen is the upper daily limit for a 100% healthy person. A few studies suggest the number is only 2000mg/day.
Given your post was 4 months ago, don't know if you'll see this, but you can get opiate scripts with much lower levels of acetaminophen (e.g. get one with 325mg acetaminophen instead of 750mg)
Also in some cases, adding a synergistic agent (e.g. Lyrica, Neurontin are just a couple) to the opiate script can help reduce the dosage of opiate/acetaminphen you need to control pain.

A) you don't provide a mg dosage here
B) if your liver was destroyed you would not be playing on youtube, rather you would be in a hospital or dead.

I know that it damages your liver in large amounts, but what are the immediate effects of a large overdose?

There are no immediate effects of a large overdose, but without treatment you will die. Slowly and painfully
