Both the ZJZ and Zhejiang versions used the words "xiu cheng zheng guo" multiple times throughout the episodes. This phrase was never used ONCE in the original version. Based on that fact ALONE, I could argue how badly that version FAILS.
What's really sad and pathetic is that the majority of Chinese viewers themselves are probably too stupid to understand the philosophical depth of the novel ... monkey hit demon with staff. Such is the stupidity of the human race.
Apparently the producers of the 1986 version were too stupid to even understand that the "journey" is allegorical, representing an individual's lifelong path towards philosophical enlightenment through contemplation and the gaining of wisdom, as well as the overcoming of hardships, in order to reach a state of intellectual purity. Retrieving the Buddhist scriptures is merely representative of THAT, but I guess that's just too deep for the criminally STUPID to comprehend.
In addition, the series is supposed to be a DRAMA, despite the 1986 PISS version having no emotion whatsoever. In Zhang Ji Zhong's adaptation, the characters (be they gods, demons, immortals, or whatever) actually have personalities and actually show EMOTION. Wow! What a FUCKING concept! In addition, there are actually scenes in which Taoist and Buddhist philosophies and principles are explained and explored ... kind of the WHOLE FUCKING POINT OF THE NOVEL.
Zhang Ji Zhong's production is FAR fucking superior to the overrated SHIT 1986 version, a piece of crap excuse for a TV series that looks like it was filmed, edited, and written by a band of retarded adolescents. Completely devoid of philosophy and emotion ... which is ironic, considering Journey to the West is a philosophical allegory portraying an individual's self journey towards philosophical enlightenment ...
Five years of conceiving of and building the sets, designing and creating the costumes, a shitload of CGI designing for the visual effects, casting hundreds of actors and extras, and oh yeah ... writing the fucking SCRIPT. And then nine months to film it all. Every single aspect was done superbly and in a far superior way to the overrated SHIT 1986 adaptation, an absolute embarassment to China, to mythology, and to television in general.
Most of you ungrateful, miserable FUCKS that continue to insult Zhang Ji Zhong's masterful adaptation have no idea of the amount of work that went into making this unprecedented, epic production:
1000 crew members
400 characters (cast + extras), which meant 400 different costumes

Well the CGI quality is a bit better this time. Make-up is good especially the demons. I like all the lady demons portrayal in these version. Only the ending is abit too short and the custime for the monk is not to my liking. My opinion only. Bought the DVD set - could not stand it from the TV cause some jokers keep popping up singing happy birthday at all the advertisement intervals. Irritating as hell.

I think many will agree with me that Stephen Chow's film in two parts of the Monkey King story was one of the most beautifully scripted and mentally stimulating version I've seen with all it's twists and turns. Titled "Pandora Box", I was truly amazed by the tight production and effects that were incorporated in the film. The direction and wonderful cast and the comedy got me to love it that I watched it several times. To me it was quite a memorable film especially for the holidays.
This is far awesome than that gay harry potter with a wand and their flying sequences look amateur compared to this film's stunts and acrobatics. The story here is even more interesting considering that it dates back to China's ancient times. Harry potter can be summed up like this: How to get a wimpy revenge by going to school and waving a gay wand. LOL! On the other hand, "Journey to the West" is a great adventure story the likes of 300 and Immortals.

Ok im watching this series right now and admitteedly, there were come cheesy cgi especially from ep 1=12. The storyline is pretty close tothe novel but didn't start off as strong as I expected it to be which was my only letdown. Apart from that from eps 12 onwards, the series became more exciting and watchable.

I used to watch the really old Journey to the West series when I was little. I loved it. It was one of my favorites~ :D This brings back memories

Are there any tv series critics in China? If so, they are quite lousy as all the series produced by China are stupid, garralous, and boring. Their main emphasis has always been speacial effects and nothing else - no direction, acting, script, or artistry.

Ok im watching this series right now and admitteedly, there were come cheesy cgi especially from ep 1=12. The storyline is pretty close tothe novel but didn't start off as strong as I expected it to be which was my only letdown. Apart from that from eps 12 onwards, the series became more exciting and watchable.

@Xytos There was a 2009 version which was aired in 2010 but this 2011 version has been in production for a long time. I hope there won't be anymore remakes soon.
