Needs a Timing belt. The belt is slapping on the cover. Saw this many times.
I use to work at a Toyota dealer. either the previous owner is lying to you, or the shop that did the belt did a poor job of setting the tension. Either way the timing belt needs to come off, and the engine needs to be retimed, as it has probably jumped a tooth.
@justinsvidz I know its bad, but I let it run since I uploaded the video. As of today, the noise seemed to have died down. I think the belt rubbed all the cover plastic off enough to give it proper slack. Im not sure about the timing, but I wonder if I should still get it checked.
2001 Honda Accord 2.3L 4cyl I had this exact same noise it goes away after the engine warms up. After unscrewing the three 12mm screws from the exhaust heat shield it was evident that one of the bolts that secured the exhaust manifold had severed and the exhaust gasket had blown. Replaced all of the stud screws and nuts with a new exhaust gasket ... problem solved.
Other than the obnoxious start-up, the car is great. Boring as a toaster, but unbelievably dependable. I bought it one year old. Overall, it's held together remarkably well.
When I first start it, it goes up to about 2200 and quickly settles to around 1600. It seems noisiest around 1400 (if you rev it, the noise completely stops when it passes exactly 2100) and the noise gets slow on it's way to 800. At full warm up, it's around 600. Even fully warmed up there's still a rapid tick and a very slight vibration. Maybe I'll try that Lucas stuff suggested. I still think the main issue is the tensioner.
@200twistatwista wow ive never heard of lucas oil stabilizer. im gonna do an oil change soon, i might search this up. was your car louder before? how much did this quiet it by?
I originally thought it was just mine, until I helped another guy jump start his camry... there was that exact same sound. I think there's just enough slack in the belt to vibrate against the cover. Somehow, the tensioner must tighten up after warmup, then things are fine. Other than that, the car runs completely fine. I usually just start it, throw it in gear, and keep driving until it warms up.
@TheAutogearbox wow, i do the exact same thing and just turn on my music. however, when i start my other camry, i do notice some differences. the "normal" one has a higher idle on cold start (1600 vs 1200), and it feels smoother below 2000 rpm. does your camry vibrate under 2k rpm as well? and is the cold start idle below 1200 rpm?
I've heard lots of 4 cylinder camrys like that. My 2001, with 156k does that on the first start of the day. When I rev it to 2100, it goes smooth and quiet. After it warms up it's fine - about 90% of the sound goes away. Each time, they've diagnosed the timing belt. Right after they change it, things are fine... for a while... then it starts again. The manual says 90k, but I change it at 60k as it gets too noisy to be tolerable. It's done this since about 50k. Runs fine, just obnoxious.
@200twistatwista youre so right. ive been running this car for thousands of miles like this. its so loud for the first 5 mins, then after it warms its quieter, or so i thought. recently i bought another 1998 camry 4 cyl, exactly the same except its 10k miles younger and a different paint job. its !much! quieter. now i have 1 angry camry and one quiet one! :D
2 minutes ago i have a 98 toyota camry le 4 cyl......i have been otr trucker for the past two years and the car hasnt moved much since i got a job back home i have to drive back and forth to work a total of about 60 miles a day half interstate miles....anyway....it burns oil like crazy....i do have a slight leak in my valve cover but it cant be this bad of a leak because the day before yesterday i had to fill up the pan and today i had to do it again...i also dont see any smoke
I just got back from the shop. It was my water pump rattling. I was charged $775 for water pump, timing belt, oil pump seal, crank shaft seal, cam seal, drive belts, thermostat and coolant. Peace.
o man thats weird. the previous owner told me he changed the water pump and timing belt a few thousand miles ago and then the noise started after that.
can i ask you one more thing? did yours only make a noise on cold start for 10 minutes and low rpms? and did it affect your gas mileage? thanks alot for your responses.
@deuceswild76 I know what the shop told you,but being an ASE certified mechanic(who also owns a 96 camry 230K Miles and has had this exact same noise)that noise typically happens when the timing belt is on its last leg and is gaining slack against the tensioner.I replaced just the belt and seals on mine and the noise stopped. The basic design of a water pump will not prove to make that kind of noise with its failure points. The water pump being timing belt driven is replaced by most shops drng svc
Yea...they replaced the TB and water pump together. Whatever it was, after those two things. Now my suspension creaks and moans on and off????? And I just had my driver side window motor replaced since it would work on/off. Weird quirks with these camrys. Also I get a sulfur smell when accelleration too quickly.
@deuceswild76 Sulphur smell when hard accelerating would indicate a bad catalytic converter. You wouldn't happen to have a flex pipe leak letting that smell into the cabin? Suspension creak and moan is 9 out of 10 times strut mounts.
Thanks for the info. I don't know abou the flex pipe question.
I had the struts/mounts replaced not too long ago. Also had the sway bar bushings/links, ect... It only does it when it's cold out in the morning. And stops about 15-20 minutes after the car has warmed up. After reading in toyota forums, it just seems like a quirky thing that camrys do. Peace.
i still havent had a chance to bring it in. and the timing case isnt too easy to take off. let me know if you figure out what it is, and ill let you know if i get to it first. thx

crank bolts come loose once in awhile and make that noise when the pulley rattles.

@grigoriantos i suspect the same thing. ill be driving this thing down to LA and back to SF. i hope it doesnt break down on me :(

either the tensioner or the belt is past its prime. more than likely the belt is stretched and thats a flapping sound from the lash in the belt.

The water pump blades hitting the w/p wall. replace with new water pump. that's your fix.

"Lucas Transmission" fix works great with my 99 camry transmission as it shifts soo much better now : P
I added the full bottle of that to the transmission like it said with the engine 100% idel and warm.

I just use those with my oil and, it super quiets the engine.
