My favorite live performance, my favorite Tom Petty song, simply amazing. I like the live performance of "Learning To Fly" better than the recording, but then you throw in Stevie Nicks and such an electric crowd... chills.
this is the best live song i've ever heard. and im 87 years old and been to 1000's of concerts. kidding. im 19 in my first year of uni, just finished my last exam, only one left on my rez floor and pretty much my building, getttin drunk by myself and got this on replay. either way, tom petty is amazing.
@feilog Stevie was a guest at his concert. If you watch the documentary Running Down A Dream Stevie says she would have left Fleetwood Mac if Tom would have asked her
Love it you have this video! It is won of the best! These two performers voices go together like two souls meant to be intertwinned for eternity. I always wonderered if Tom Petty and Steve Nicks loved each other which caused Miss Nicks not to fall into love with Lindsey... We may never know the personal life Miss Stevie Nicks keeps in her heart! I just wish her the best in her musical life; she has our love!
Life is strange. I pulled an all nighter feeling a little depressed. It's 8:00am right now and right at the piano solo at about 1:48 the biggest flash of sunlight comes through my window. I don't know why but I really got me thinking.
this song is the anthem to my life.its my abloute favorite song in the whole wide world and there absolutely no way i could possibly play this song loud enough.
... at the end when when Petty prayed over the crowed chanting the chorus I lost it. Four simple chords but what makes the song addictive is that the transition between the chords happens a bit sooner than expected which create a feeling of forever moving forward. Epic.
Someone said Stevie Nicks could sing next to anybody. I think it was Tom Petty! Magnificent Tom, magnificent Stevie, thank rock and roll for gems like these
You know a song is good when people listen to it 20 years later instead of being considered "old" 3 months after its release and being tossed asside never to be heard again like most music today.
Tom Petty's best song of all time right here in my opinion. And it came later in his career. What is amazing about Tom Petty unlike the great majority of musicians is that he kept getting better and growing as a musician. His first few albums were great, but not his best albums. You can't say that for many bands who fail to live up to their earlier success.
The first time i heard this song, i fell in love with it immidiatley....and this year, 2011, i'm graduating to Gr.7 and i'm thinking of having this song for my graduation.....and he's a singer that can actually sound amazing live.
Seen this tour in Buffalo N.Y. @ six flags Stevie Nick's was'nt with him that evening,my loss, because to have Stevie Nick's as your back up singer...........ya know.Tom was truly fantastic as usual and he had the Allman Brothers as the back up band.
@feelingood777 ich sag doch nur meine meinung warumm reagierst du so aggressiv wirst du gemobbt und freust dich weil hier ein auf wichtig spielen darfst oda was?!
My most favorite song of all time. I'm curious to know, does anybody know why he performs it acoustically nowadays rather than the full version with drums and everything?
Stevie, Stevie, you are the best. And your participation in this song just further demonstrates it. Her authentic touch to this best Petty song just makes it that much more awesome.
This version doesn't jam whatsoever. Where's the drums? I hate when bands change their stuff from the album. I'd be pissed if I paid a ton of money to see Tom Petty and heard this.
@WildGunman77 I actually disagree, I would hate it if I paid money and I just heard exactly the same song as I had already heard on the album. That would be a waste of money.
This performance is amazing u can really appreciate the clarity in Tom's voice & how great he is actually sounding! How could any1 want an album version when 3:16 is just awesome; I really wish I could have been there. All that said, I can, kind of, see where WildGunman77 is coming from & if the drums & full band had kicked in at some point I think the roof may well have come off! Personally, I would not have minded if it was 10 minutes longer and it finished with the adlibs like in the video :)
I saw him in Detroit for this tour. When he got the audience to sing along, I swear, it was the closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had.
This performance is a perfect example of true musicianship. It illustrates how low modern music has sunk. Look at the top ten song charts for the last few years: pure nonsense. When did we start to call rap music? And when did music standards fall so far? Tom Petty shows what a true musician is capable of. He has written a beautiful song and somehow has managed to perform it in a way that is stunning. Stevie Nicks adds magic and the audience is clearly mesmerized.
If you knew Stevie at all, you would know she loves to sing backup vocals. And she is not wasted here. This is Tom's song and she knows her place. She often mentions what a blast she had on this tour.
