Mariah Carey is an amazing singer and I've been a fan since I was a child. BUT Whitney Houston is the TRUTH. Singing is not about who sings higher but how well it's delivered. As far as interpretation, not only does she do this well with her own songs but she can sing somebody else's song and make you forget all about the original artist (i.e. I Will Always Love You, I Believe in You Me, etc.)

Well even though my name shows a preference I do like Mariah a lot. Mariah's performance was better but I think it's because of the song she sung. Whitney's was more controlled and went from soft and beautiful to strong and powerful and ended soft and beautiful again. They are both incredible singers. But I will always enjoy prime Whitney tone over Mariah's tone.

I prefer them both! It's up to my mood! Sometimes I just have a lack of Mariah and I can listen to her the entire week. She's a amazing singer and songwriter. Her songs always inspire me a lot. It depends for me. Whitney's performance felt warmer, like something I'd love to hear at Christmas. Mariah's was more festive and that gospel ending really puts you in the spirit, I could listen to it year round.

@valarangel Mariah's whistles weren't damaging at all because if they were, she wouldn't be able to do them now. What was damaging was her nodules because they make her voice fragile. And BTW, Mariah's vocals here are of very high quality as are Whitney's and Mariah didn't even show that much vocal range here yet she still killed this performance.

When you whistle hitting those superhigh notes you vocal chords make a distance between each other, so they separate to make a sound high. You can also hear air going though it when Mariah whistling. Then it takes time to turn back to the precious position. Whistling when you've got nodules is dangerous as well!
Mariah fans tend to respect Whitney because they know that Mariah was influenced by her. But Christina claims that she was influenced by Mariah and Whitney yet her skill is so deficient that it almost disrespects MC and WH as vocalists. I've read internet threads about Xtina's oversinging where people extend harsh criticism to MC and WH simply because Xtina capitalized on their style.

They're two totally different kind of songs although both was about Christmas. You can say who bring church and who don't. Joy to the World is already the "brighter" song and the fact that Mariah sung it with church choir make it sound more church while Whitney sing it alone and Do you hear is a darker and more like a ballad song. Both two women are equally great. They both turn two simple songs to the powerful emotional version. Love them.

Comparing their voices, Mariah's is more versatile and light while Whitney's is big and darker. In terms of ability, Whitney does not slay Mariah because anything Whitney can do vocally, Mariah can do.

Well even though my name shows a preference I do like Mariah a lot. Mariah's performance was better but I think it's because of the song she sung. Whitney's was more controlled and went from soft and beautiful to strong and powerful and ended soft and beautiful again. They are both incredible singers. But I will always enjoy prime Whitney tone over Mariah's tone.

I prefer them both! It's up to my mood! Sometimes I just have a lack of Mariah and I can listen to her the entire week. She's a amazing singer and songwriter. Her songs always inspire me a lot. Whitney has her vocal power that comes from her heart and soul! She's definitely incredible and unbeatable. They're different vocally, so it would be silly to compare them. All in all, choosing between these two, I vote for Mariah !!!

It depends for me. Whitney's performance felt warmer, like something I'd love to hear at Christmas. Mariah's was more festive and that gospel ending really puts you in the spirit, I could listen to it year round.

@valarangel Mariah's whistles weren't damaging at all because if they were, she wouldn't be able to do them now. What was damaging was her nodules because they make her voice fragile. And BTW, Mariah's vocals here are of very high quality as are Whitney's and Mariah didn't even show that much vocal range here yet she still killed this performance.

@Devotedlamb19 I agree with everything you wrote about Mariah, but you're a little bit wrong about whistle. Nodules played a big role in damaging her voice, but whistling has it too. When you whistle hitting those superhigh notes you vocal chords make a distance between each other, so they separate to make a sound high. You can also hear air going though it when Mariah whistling. Then it takes time to turn back to the precious position. Whistling when you've got nodules is dangerous as well!

But Christina claims that she was influenced by Mariah and Whitney yet her skill is so deficient that it almost disrespects MC and WH as vocalists. I've read internet threads about Xtina's oversinging where people extend harsh criticism to MC and WH simply because Xtina capitalized on their style.

They're two totally different kind of songs although both was about Christmas. You can say who bring church and who don't. Joy to the World is already the "brighter" song and the fact that Mariah sung it with church choir make it sound more church while Whitney sing it alone and Do you hear is a darker and more like a ballad song. Both two women are equally great. They both turn two simple songs to the powerful emotional version. Love them.
