I remember when I used to sing this in school, and we'd all get up and dance around the chapel... thank you for bringing back such wonderful memories!
This is a Shaker tune, definately not Quaker. The similarity betwen the two is in the rhyming of the names. Our Quaker people meet for quiet worship, traditionally did not sing in their meetings and surely didn't dance!
Remembering how I used to find difficulty in matching chord changes to lyrics as a young man led me to try to help others in this fashion. Thanks for your comment.
Yes, I used to play it as a three-chord bash until I found it in a song book published by Galliard Press where they showed the extra chords which give it so much more colour.
always loved this song, love to be able to play it but i am a beginner and find it hurts my fingers when holding down the strings how long will it take me to learn this as i have little patience with my learning. thanks
How long it takes to get your fingers calloused enough to negate the pain is up to you. How much pain can you stand? Even though it hurts to begin with, the more you practise the quicker the callouses will come. Once you have them, the pain will not be there to bother you any more and as long as you keep playing it will not return. It is up to you.
And I attend a church there, and very soon I am going to be playing guitar for the worship at the start of every service, I think I'll make a point of learning this, It's a fantastic song! I can really picture my church singing along to it.
I am pleased to be of help. Perhaps you would like to check out a couple of my playlists, namely 'my own songs relating to religion' and 'Christmas songs and carols'.
A school days favourite, sounds a little macabre when you understand the meaning- ''Its hard to dance with the devil on your back'' and the crucification, literally...JJ.

An old favourite, brought a tear to my eye particularly the last verse. Sung with passion as ever. Simple yet powerful song. Great stuff

Do you have a capo on? I tried to play along but it didn't sound right, lol. Great job, by the way =]
brrapscrollcheck 2 years ago
Yes, the capo is behind the 2nd fret so I am playing in A using G chord shapes.

Another one I remember from school! I quite like this one, it's a very lively, folky sounding hymn.
