It was a bad decision to get rid of Rita. I enjoyed Season 5 because it took the character of Dexter in a new and unusual direction. But without Rita, its not the same.

I will be upset with Season 5 because Rita isn't there - she was a beautiful character in every sense of the word but that is how a show like Dexter is so good at emotional immersion. Then you have the aspect that Dexter DIDN'T feel emotion, for most of his life prior to that.
Without Rita it won't be the same for me, but that's what makes it so good. :)

I haven't seen S5 (except for EP1 on Showtime's website), but I can say that Quinn doesn't have the personality nor likability to be a Doakes-like character.
We can all hope that S6 will be better, but I don't see how. Personally, I would have liked it if Dexter had started a new life elsewhere. Oh well ... :-(

What was it about, then?
The skinner was George King, that ex-soldier/torturer guy from Nicaragua (or one of those places, it's been a while for me, too!) who owned the tree-trimming business.

Ok just like everyone else I loved rita but i know bullshit when I see it. Whatever way the Trinity killer killed her is just true BS to me. Imo opinion I dont think that he killed her. In the finale of season 4, John seemed to eager about getting the hell out of Miami. Another point I found myself asking is why in the world their neighbor, (insert name because I forgot), bawling so hard after a women he only kissed once died. Its too damn suspicious. He did it not Trinity!
Season 5 was good but it was very reminiscent of an extended version of CSI or Law and Order. The whole premise of Dexter struggling with his darkness was kind of swept under the rug so he could deal with Lumen's demons. I hated that Rita was killed off but I believe fans would not be so disappointed if the writers began to show why her death was necessary. I still have faith in the show. Season 6, I'm ready.

we THINK we know dexter because we see him do what he does and we know his life history, but, you CANT know someTHING like dexter....
I loved Rita. She was definitely one of, if not, my favorite character. But killing her off was the best thing they could have done. Her death opened so many doors for this incredible show. Plus, we finally got to see Dexter really open up. Never have we seen him lose someone so close to him. He truly loved Rita. It was a difficult thing for him to express in words, but it was always there.
I'd rather the show ended sooner with Rita alive then simply be used as a plot device. She added so much to the show, and Dexter, I think it wasn't worth it.
Let me say still though, I did enjoy season 5 and look forward to season 6.

I think Rita had to die. The show was in danger of becoming formulaic, and while Dexter cared about Rita he didn't LOVE Rita. He loves Lumen. For the sake of the show's continuation and the Dexter himself, Rita had to die.
@Yellothar4 yes I love Lexter (lol). Like you said Dexter truly cared for Rita, but he didnt love her; I dont even think they ever truly connected. To me it just seemed like he was trying to blend in (eg. like Harry told him about prom etc) But with Lumen they know eachothers deepest darkest secrets and they CONNECT. I hope Lumen sticks around but I doubt we are going to get any Lexter in season 6.

He did say that he loved Rita, and then in season five we saw him blossom with Lumen, which felt nothing like his attitude toward's Rita. Dexter loved Rita to the best of his ability during the time he knew her, but until he met Lumen- it's clear he didn't really know what that meant. Dex's commentary on his feelings needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Jennifer has nothing to be jealous of.. The woman is gorgeous, so is Julie but i find her a bit more "blah".. Jennifer seems more down to earth.. I didn't want her (Julie) to be killed off but i had hope they would make her character less annoying, with the nagging and the annoying voice..lol.. well, its my opinion anyway *winks*.. Love the show, one of my favorite..
Jennifer's character started out annoying (and poorly acted) but became more believable and grounded as the seasons went on. I started out with complete empathy for Julie's character but by the end of season 4 I was actually rooting for her death. Her scenes became 90% nagging, and the familial "sitcom" scenes were really started to weigh down the story.
At the end, they all kinda seem to be glancing around and chuckling nervously. I thought I heard they'd be bringing Rita back as part of Dexter's conscience, like Harry. Hm?
Glad they got rid of Rita. She was ok the first 2 seasons but after that it became too much. I did notice that she seemed to get a lot bustier every season. My girlfriend noticed this too. I wonder how many others out their noticed this. She was hot. Too bad they made her such an annoying character.

Season 1 - Fantastic, gripping, great twist at the end
Season 2 - Great, tense, great and unpredictable ending
Season 3 - Pretty good, uninspired serial killer, predictable ending
Season 4 - Predictable motive for Trinity (I guessed it with 95% accuracy by ep. 5), decent but contrived plot to kill off Rita, full of flaws
Haven't seen Season 5 yet, but I can probably guess that it won't be as good as S4 (uh-oh ...)

Season 5 was good. Of course it was impossible to match season 4 quality, but for most shows dexter's s5 would be very good.
I think it was a transition season, for something more consistant to come. I expect S6 to be a real record breaker.

I think Rita had to die. The show was in danger of becoming formulaic, and while Dexter cared about Rita he didn't LOVE Rita. He loves Lumen. For the sake of the show's continuation and the Dexter himself, Rita had to die.

@Yellothar4 yes I love Lexter (lol). Like you said Dexter truly cared for Rita, but he didnt love her; I dont even think they ever truly connected. To me it just seemed like he was trying to blend in (eg. like Harry told him about prom etc) But with Lumen they know eachothers deepest darkest secrets and they CONNECT. I hope Lumen sticks around but I doubt we are going to get any Lexter in season 6.

@sylarishot He also said in season one that he didn't have feelings. A lot of the show is Dex's self-discovery. He did say that he loved Rita, and then in season five we saw him blossom with Lumen, which felt nothing like his attitude toward's Rita. Dexter loved Rita to the best of his ability during the time he knew her, but until he met Lumen- it's clear he didn't really know what that meant. Dex's commentary on his feelings needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

"it's clear he didn't really know what that meant." - No, it is not. He has trouble giving names and placing his feelings but he has them. Rita's death made him realize that what he felt for her was LOVE. It opened him up.

Jennifer has nothing to be jealous of.. The woman is gorgeous, so is Julie but i find her a bit more "blah".. Jennifer seems more down to earth.. I didn't want her (Julie) to be killed off but i had hope they would make her character less annoying, with the nagging and the annoying voice..lol.. well, its my opinion anyway *winks*.. Love the show, one of my favorite..

I always liked Julies character and acting much better than Jennifers character and acting. Jennifer gets really annoying sometimes.

Jennifer's character started out annoying (and poorly acted) but became more believable and grounded as the seasons went on. I started out with complete empathy for Julie's character but by the end of season 4 I was actually rooting for her death. Her scenes became 90% nagging, and the familial "sitcom" scenes were really started to weigh down the story.

Glad they got rid of Rita. She was ok the first 2 seasons but after that it became too much. I did notice that she seemed to get a lot bustier every season. My girlfriend noticed this too. I wonder how many others out their noticed this. She was hot. Too bad they made her such an annoying character.
