It's literally like all those pulp comics that we grew up with (well, I didn't get to - I'm only twenty here in 2012) coming to life on the big screen. It looks SO *COOL.* How could this not have been successful? I know that I for one need to see it again.
This trailer originally had music from the 1994 movie Stargate ("Mastadge Drag" composed by David Arnold and played by the Sinfonia of London) near the beginning followed by a small amount of Stargate SG-1 music, but for some reason the Stargate movie music was later replaced by more Stargate SG-1 theme song music.
To people complaining about the use of Stargate SG-1 music: it is common for movie trailers to recycle music from other media. To people complaining about the visual quality of the film in terms of the colors and fuzzy CGI: the film was purposely made to look like an old technicolor film. To those who think that this movie is a ripoff of Crimson Skies: Crimson Skies has air pirates while Sky Captain has retro-futuristic robots and such. If anything, Crimson Skies itself is a ripoff of TaleSpin.
wow, I would have liked very very much that the History had stopped at that time, in 30´s, with that buildings, that clothes, that hats, that cars, and that kind of girls, that time was epic, the world was diferent because technology was a baby, but with a enormous potential, how the world would be if we were as that time?, but with the today technology? Much cleaner, without graffiti, without rap, without gangs of drug addicts, without any of the shit that today's society has
@carloko08 did you just say rape and drugs didn't exist before the 1930s? that the world was a better time when the nazis were preparing to slaughter millions? did you just attempt to draw a moral parallel between listening to rap music and committing rape? LOL. how old are you kid? what grade are you in? clearly the school system has failed us
@friendlycakeasaurus , hahaha, hey kid, where I said about rape=rap?, well, if you want it, i said, " the world, stopped in that times, will be much cleaner, without graffiti, without rap, ( without rapers ) without gangs of drug addicts, without any of the shit that today's society has " happy? ok, jews media and jews teachers, and jews politician and jews filmakers and all that stupids said so much things about nazis, but, I dont believe in jews, dude, those are the worst liars of history
i gotta say, i really loved this movie. The script wasn't amazing and deep, but it really had that old school hero feel in a futurisic 1940s world. and cmon, the title is so damn epic lol

you know this was a great experiment at the least, without the green screen development they did on this movie, others like Sin City, 300, even Avatar wouldnt exist, or look so cool now.
@Villesanti I don't think that the plot is extremely weak. It's not very...complicated but the idea behind it is very interesting :) And the dieselpunk look is fantastic :D
Believe it or not, but this is the trailer that's on the Netflix official site. I was totally shocked when I heard the official Stargate SG-1 opening theme as the soundtrack for ths trailer on NETFLIX! I mean, isn't that illegal? Making money off someone else's work without giving any credit whatsoever like that?
How much ya wunna bet that 1 episode of Stargate SG-1 is better than this movie?
@md1456 ...Um, that's what I was saying. I was saying the Stargate SG-1 was 10 times better than this movie could ever be and that it's just plain wrong to use the opening for my favorite TV show to promote a completely separate movie. Where on earth did you get the idea that I thought there was something wrong with Stargate? I LOVE Stargate SG-1.
@iramoman1666 You dont recommend it? dude what are you talking about this movie rocks! ya you wouldn't appreciate a good movie like this even if it kicked you in the balls
I did actually read that they didn't have music for the teaser at the time, so they used SG-1 theme. They obviously got permission to use it, plus I think it suits the teaser.
Mind you when the Teaser for Star Wars first came out, they didn't have a musicial score for that and so used something until they got the full Star Wars music from John Williams.
This film was a nice attemp at being a great tribute to the pop comic entertainment of the 30's and the effects were definitly something that noone had quite seen before. Films today like Avatar , 300 and Christmas Carol really owe a lot to this early Digital film. Even though I'm not super crazy about it as a movie , I can certainly give credit were credit is due.
It's common to license existing music in trailers for movies without a finished score. No one "Stole" anything. Besides Edward Shearmur's score in the movie blows away the Stargate SG-1 music in the trailer.
JMY. I agree. The studio did not back up this movie at all. I have seen it many times and still enjoy it. I hope that Kerry Conran keeps going. He has amazing talent, and yes Bay keeps putting out crap that people run to see..then get let down. What do you think about Conran doing his version of "North by Northwest"? I would like to see that rendition.
Had "Sky Captain" been advertised on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon instead of Adult Swim and Comedy Central it would have been a blockbuster. My nephew loved it. In my book it's second only to the Indiana Jones movies when it comes to homages to 1930s serials. How it bombed while Micheal Bay's annual turd fests continue to make billions is beyond me.
Well I meant to say second (or would that be third?) to Indiana Jones and the original Star Wars. Someday "Sky Captain" will be regarded as a classic. "The Wizard of Oz" and "A Christmas Story" both tanked at the Box Office.
That is tragically correct, some great films do not get the reception they deserve. Dune can be added to that list, I was actually going to see this movie but the show times did not match my schedule at the time. The studios act like a mafia cartel by promoting the crappier films while not promoting quality movies. Most movie studios now are own by corporate empires that cover every area of your life. No wonder they push/ manipulate movie promotion to lower the audiences's IQ more than before.
Far better. The Rockateer was a huge disappointment IMO. Mixing real celebs (like W.C. Fields) with fake ones who are obviously base on real ones, Dalton's villain character being a rip on (and a insult to) Errol Flynn. Although there where aspersions on Flynn's character back in the day alleging Nazi sympathies for not serving in WWII but John Wayne didn't serve either and no one ever doubted the Duke allegiances. BTW the rocket suit was inspired by Commander Cody from the 50s
In my opinion, "Sky Captain" and "The Rocketeer" are both equally good, both as tributes to 1930s serials, and as movies. They are both some of my favorites.
I'm Glad to hear it. And that's all that matters really . In my opinion , Rocketeer is the \better of the two movie. But both are very entertaining and effective Homaze's to the 1930's. And I find myself giving Sky Captain a look whenever it's on cable. Take Care.
Definitely one of the most underrated movies of the 2000's - great story line, acting, visual effects. Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow were brilliant screen couple. I love this movie
Of course it`s an" homage".I am pointing the way to some of the source material. The Skycaptain is clearly from the Blackhawk comics, the giant robots are from "The Mechanical Monsters"Fleischer Superman animated series(it`s on youtube). Many others I haven`t identified yet.I was hoping other viewers would also point out more sources.
Yeah, it's a real movie came out in 2004. Thing is, there's just about no Steampunk movies out there, so this wouldn't have as much a budget as a genre that's been proven to make money.
Worth a watch, but too dark, literally, in many early scenes, and with no particular chemistry between Paltrow, Law, Jolie, etc. or any involving story, just MUCHO intriguing effects, since the entire movie was added over and around the actors playing their roles in an empty room against a blue screen.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who noticed that it's the theme from Stargate: SG-1... I watched this teaser and was humming along and didn't realize why at first... and then it hit me like a ton of bricks, it was the theme from one of my favourite shows (one that I could only see on occasion because I could only watch it on Fox, and their schedule was so unpredictable... this week Outer Limits the next perhaps Stargate, then some sports for the next several weeks, and now we're back to Stargate.
Not a perfect film but the style was breath-taking. People complained about the odd space colonisation bit at the end, but frankly it was one of the best 'pulp' evil schemes I've ever heard of.
I remember seeing some trailer for this movie(can't seem to find it on youtube) that was pieced together with just the robots in the beginning. I thought that they were making a Big O movie when I watched the first 30 secs or so of it.
one of the tricks behind the movie is that it takes place in 1938 or so, but in a parallel universe : there are no nazis in Germany threatening the world, and there are still zeppelin ballons, see "Hindenburg III" at the beginning of the movie. ( all the zeppelin program has been stopped after the crash of the Hindenburg in 1935 or so )
i love these kinds of movies that are set back in the 50's-60's and involve futuristic story lines makes me wish world was sorta like that :) i loved this movie
Regardless of whether or not it goes well with the trailer, I wouldn't say they "ripped off" or "plagiarized" the Stargate theme. It's common practice for trailers coming out before the film's score is finished to use music from other sources. I'm sure they had permission.
This guy commentated the first Harry Potter trailers. I can't tell you how annoying it was when he said Harry Potter. But anyway, the movie is awesome!

It seems that after Tomb Raider, Angelina Jolie gets in any movie with a geeky audience (Beowulf!) she's hot, though, but she doesn't get paid enough to do these kinds of movies.
Some of the sounds effects weren't in their final form either, I noticed. Pulp novel based/inspired films tend not to do well in the theater. But I like this one. (I have fun looking for references to other films and such in this movie.)
It's literally like all those pulp comics that we grew up with (well, I didn't get to - I'm only twenty here in 2012) coming to life on the big screen. It looks SO *COOL.* How could this not have been successful? I know that I for one need to see it again.

Yep :)

Regardless of whether or not it goes well with the trailer, I wouldn't say they "ripped off" or "plagiarized" the Stargate theme. It's common practice for trailers coming out before the film's score is finished to use music from other sources. I'm sure they had permission.

I agree. Those 1940s-style robots wer prolly the best part of the film.

Robots were cool, but I hated those gay wing flapping planes.

This is a good movie. Maybe it'll get a second life as a cult classic.
