  • What year was this please?

  • @liedersanger1 somewhere in 1966-68

  • This is the best pop performance I've ever seen by an opera singer. Better than Sills and Fleming. Incredible artist.

  • What an amazing talent!

This is a perfect example of the capabilities of the human voice.

Her voice is so natural...no matter what she decides to sing.

  • A full fledged operatic soprano who could deliver pop songs superbly in a brassy alto voice. I wonder what her octave range was?

  • This is the first time I've heard her singing both the classical and jazz repertoire and I am very impressed -- what a great talent! She was certainly a "natural"!

  • Is it possible that she was an even greater pop singer than an opera singer, which is not to say she wasn't great in opera? Wow does she sing this well.

  • A VOCAL GENIUS. I adore her.

  • Thank your god for hearing this womans unique gift ,how did she do it? Many opera stars have tried to bridge the world of opera and jazz-ballads but most, if not all of them never get it right. This lady does, bigtime

  • eileen farrell is FOR ME. She was great.!!!!!!!*********great orchestra was it cbs ? ROGHARM enjoy eileen singing in english. also liked her singing "I'm Old Fashioned." it brings backs the cbs radio network programme ++THE WOOLWORTH HOUR+++aired from 1955-158 inclusive. when network radio was great.

  • She was so wonderful...and so versatile. I found Eileen Farrell when i was in high school and have been listening to her ever since.

  • @weightfeather1 and there are those who have it and don't know it, and if we don't tell them, they will never know. All FOUR possibilities exist.

  • FALSE!!! talent is not synonymous with self-assuredness.

  • What a voice!

  • The Best.....!!!

  • Proof positive that opera singers CAN sing pop songs as well or better than pop singers!

They just need to know when to "dial down."

Kiri Te Kanawa does a fabulous job on this same Gershwin standard too..

  • EILEEN THE EXCELLENT***** ROGHARM is it a cbs radio broadcast? it seems too great me in the arangement and orchestra

  • Eileen the wonderful!

  • Unreal to hear Ms. Farrell perform "In Questa Reggia" from Turandot then listen to this and believe its the same singer!! Not because she doesn't sing both magnificently but because she DOES!! The tessituras of this and something by Puccini are oceans apart! It would be like me singing one operatic selection like Corelli then turning around and nailing a Johnny Cash song.

  • As others have pointed out, Eileen Farrell is one of the few who has mastered both pop/jazz and classical opera. Kiri Te Kanawa is an excellent opera singer, but in her singing of pop/jazz/standards, she ruins the songs- ain't got rhythm.

  • SIGH!!! They "knew" how to do "it"... Amen!

  • A special lady. She went on to being a great teacher of classical and opera singing..

  • we has to learn how to be an arstist by lisining

  • SUPERBA!!!! BRAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • BRAVA!

    FANTASTIC

I miss this kind of singing woman today ....

Dont forget Helen Traubel she sung opera and Jazz and I knew some more from the USA .... this have been golden times ...

    BRAVA!

    THANKS FOR SHARING

  • Dont forget helen Traubel

a big girl with huge voice and same talent -

THIS ARE GREAT SINGERS and I miss this style every day in my life!

This chicks today who think that they are spintos or dramatic are not educated singers or artists.

BUT THIS IS A CLASS FOR HEAVEN AND I GUESS THIS IS NOTHING for liric sopranos .

  • La Grande Farrell

    Wonderful soprano and artist !

    F A N T A S T I C !

  • One or two may have equalled her in Opera (Ponselle)....same with Jazz. But, combine the two arts, and she is the greatest singer of my lifetime. A miracle....

  • i agree hiram4242. it is within the combination that the woman remains the MOST astounding singer to have ever crossed over - from the opera house to the jazz/pop charts.

  • It just shows that when the registers are balanced you can sing anything well.

  • Greatest vocalist!

She sings both jazz and classical!

  • She's the greatest at everything she does.

She was one of Berstein's favorites

My first opera singer and from Staten Island where I was born.

    Wonderful!!!!

  • Not only a great voice with impeccable musicianship but a great person too! I had the privilege of coaching with her a few times at Indiana University when she taught there in the early 70's who could 'tell it like it is', constructively. A deserving prima dona without an ego; a real 'regular person' with a naughty sense of humor & hearty laugh. Perfect pathos in her every inflection - both in pop & opera. 'I've Got A Right to Sing the Blues' album is still the tops & a must have! Miss her.

  • You were fortunate absolutely beyond measure!!

  • Haven't heard her in ages, and just got the urge to hear her pop style again. In an interview, she was asked why she was the only opera singer to sound authentic in pop, and she said "because the others think about the voice".

  • No one of the 20th century could sing both opera and pop AND jazz as well as Farrell did. She was the greatest overall singer of the epoch.

  • Yes,indeed! She is one of the greatest...and I have all 12 of her popular CDs

  • What a great artist. She truly shows us that a classical trained person can sing "popular" music stylistically correct. Some of the modern day divas need to take this lesson to heart. I hate hearing them trying to sing music of this style in their overly correct style.

  • Couldn't agree more - she sounds like the real thing!

  • Wow !!! She is the greatest !!!

  • One of my favourite artists.

  • I fell in love with "Waltzing Mathilda", the Australian "national anthem" when Eileen Farell did the singing for Eleanor Parker in the movie "Interrupted Melody". As I write this, I can hear her voice now singing to the Australian wounded soldiers during WWII. A world and lifetime away - but never forgotten.

  • My favorite soprano of all times !

  • This woman could sing in different styles equally well! Oh, did I love this voice.

  • Eileen Farrell has a beautiful voice but in my day I have heard her sing other songs much better. I'd rather hear her soprano. Sorry. If you have other postings of some of her more popular classics, I'd like to see and/or hear them. Thank you.

  • I see what you're getting at. she attempts to cram more technical difficulty the song deserves, probably. we're used to more "conversational" singing styles in Gershwin. Still a great treasure of record.
