  • This is definitely a new sight for me! Thanks for sharing! I never even knew they did this type of maintenance!

  • what is the proper speed in order for the railhead would get the shape>

  • They travel about 5-10 MPH

  • What is the liquid left behind on the tracks?

  • Looks like they are now spraying a fire retardant as well as water. Railgrinders have been known to start fires in the ties and along the right of way, especially when it is dry and where railroads have allowed vegetation to grow close to the tracks.

  • what does a rail grinder do?

  • The railhead eventually is deformed by the weight of the trains, causing the top to "mushroom", mostly on the inside part of the rail. Periodically the grinder is used to remove the extraneous metal, restoring the railhead to its "T" shaped profile necessary for proper operation.

  • There are many reasons why we condcut rail maintenance. The rail may have corrugation, spalling, shelling, bad gauge face etc. We utlize a series of patterns that allow us to bring the rail either back to template or to remove surface defects with the intent of conducting a preventative cycle in order to maintain said work.

  • Thats harsh to see another camera die..
