  • This reminds me a little bit of Eric Johnson when he's just improvising .

  • @Steven4466 Sir Allen Holdsworth has a nice ring to it doesn't it? :)

  • Those are sax lines. Not surprised as he wanted to play a wind instrument but was told to make do with a guitar.

  • How did we get on the subject of Slash from a Holdsworth video? Sure they are both guitar players, just like Jaco Pastorius and Gene Simmons are both bass players, or your average kindergarten fingerpainter and Van Gogh are both artists. Holdsworth has more in common with Charlie Parker than he does with Slash-the music is what counts, not the instrument.

  • @Steven4466

he should give the queen a medal.

  • he influenced a lot of us to play differently... see fredrik thordendal. :-) jazz metal guitarist from sweden, lots of holdsworth influence there....

  • this is the music that everybody will hear in the year of 3000s, that means holdsworth and firends is 1000 years ahead when it comes to music

  • It's cool !!!

    Only it's.

  • he has it all-speed,timing,harmonic freshness......i guess that's why there is no better and more complete player like Allan!

  • @Friday13thTaurus This is actually a common misconception. Allan's hands are average in size.

  • @watisupdood

perpendicular scale? so slash is math rock, i didn't know he was that complicated.

  • I don't know why, but the chord changes remind me of Giant Steps by John Coltrane, just a little bit though.

  • The super-controlled tempo changes at 4:26 blow my mind. It's way beyond what most people can consume as musical..

  • He's just soooooooo above any other electric guitarist... almost too good

  • I think Holdsworths lasting impact will outweigh a lot of other folks...he may not be a household name but a dedicated few will continue to listen to his music long after the current masses listening to "others" have forgotten that the "others" even existed. Prime example : when Charlie Parker died in 1955, Bill Haley was at the top of the charts. Think about that one.

  • @donbosleymusic

the fact that holdsworth is impossible to replicate will also carry his music on for ages

    thanks for listening =]

  • @TruNikkaz why do you need to replicate anything? You can learn the phrasing and vocab of Holdsworth but it will always be him no matter how good an impression you make of a parrot. Everyone has voice and so few want to find it. In the Jazz world you strive to find your own voice. In the rock world you strive to sound like everyone else.

  • @rintintin7529

i think the goal of any genre of music is to play music that can't be replicated, there are plenty of guys out there that try to emulate hodlsworth. none come close

  • @donbosleymusic Nice man... well put.

  • hey guys this is a kind of space jazz/rock fusion ...not everyones cup of tea...not really mine. But its the kind of music Alan wants to play it and someone out there on this planet of 7 billion wants to hear it, same with slash, same with sid vicious. Taste is subjective and no human is perfect in any regard much less taste, thats an oxymoron..........if you have to take a shit everyday then you are hardly perfect and frankly the universe doesnt give a good god damn!

  • good song , some times can be boring , but certainly one of the elite for sure

  • i really like this after relistening to it! i bought this album and was kind of disappointed with the drum sound and allan's lead playing, but this is a cool song! i'd like to hear a studio version of this with allan a little more relaxed. 'blues for tony' is a much better live recording from a lead point view, plus pasqua covers chords. allan himself admits to 'red light' angst when live and consequently can get nervous and overplay when he's live!warsaw98 is good, bassist dave covers chords!

  • @jamesedwardtheobald er, sounded foreign there, was trying to cram all that into the space limitation. live in warsaw 1998 allan sounds good with dave carpenter who played lots of chords. and gary novak kills on the drums. allan is pretty relaxed in spite of all the boom cameras, and i like some of his leads where he is running the midi and regular guitar sounds at the same time. i met him 2 times. he was a lot happier and mellow this time; he even looked younger than when i met him 20 years ago

  • Why slam on slash? Its like comparing apples with oranges :/ Holdsworth created a school of playing which others try to emulate -- there's only one Allan. It's not about shred, its about musical contribution that inspires humanity. I heard Brian May comment in an interview in his day guitarist weren't competitive they just loved to play and were more than willing to share with one another -- how far have we fallen, for shame, for shame.

  • @guitarran

look, im glad that you came to the video and wanted to bring some insight to the board, but slash is a terrible guitarist

im not saying this because he doesn't shred im not saying this because because i listen to technically superior guitarists

he has horrible bends and vibrato, the most robotic pentatonic phrasing i've ever heard, and his bands have the most annoying songs. the last two are opinions of course, but the uneven bends and 'out' vibrato is all fact

  • @TruNikkaz Well I have to admit I'm not a fan, but it's quite apparent that he has them on a global level. I was just saying it was a bit silly to compare genre's let a lone Allan & Slash. It's all subjective from the listener's prospective anyway, people like what they like. And I included what Brian May had said because I think it's a healthy view point which allows for a celebration of music instead of overly critical competitiveness.

  • @guitarran

you're right, music isn't a competition. but comparing artists doesn't necessarily mean that its competition because this is my opinion and im not representing anyone else's but my own.

you cant compare apples to oranges, but they are both still fruit and i love apples and hate oranges if you catch my drift

  • @guitarran

but also its good to have a rational thinker on one of my videos! i dont want to seem as if im being confrontational.

cheers my friend! to music and the wonders there-in =]

  • @TruNikkaz I actually agree with you completely on Slash.

He is by far one of the most predictable guitarists I have ever heard, as far as choice of notes, and I find his bends and vibrato to be rather rough.

Also the fact that Slash has "global" bands has no relation to his skills or his taste. It only means that the vast majority of people who listen to music is low-information (wow, just like those who vote for Republicans "Just because it's the RIGHT THING to do!").

  • @TruNikkaz - buns and noses. poop on your fm dial!

  • @guitarran it takes vision to see that. Everything in life shouldn't be ego based. I know Allan, Chad, Ernest Tibbs & the rest & none of them appear to be ego driven to me. Allan is actually painfully self effacing. I watched him apologize to a club owner for sucking. In a world of american idol worship, Kanye west & the lame duck rest, & heres Allan apologizing. America is circling the toilet bowl as I speak.

  • @vgraham44 I had the same experience with Allan at the Baked Potato in Hollywood some years back. Although Allan seems much more relaxed these days and appears to be enjoying playing guitar a lot more and life more in general -- good for him.

    Peace.

  • @guitarran

Well I'm sorry but your wrong on your second point.

The amount of instructional videos out there made by famous guitar players - who want to share their licks - is endless. So there is no change there at all.

As for Slash... yeah apples and oranges.

  • @ExtremeBogom the reference was pertaining to the community of players ( personal interaction ) which there is a lack of today. Especially since the mid 80's popular guitar music was embraced more as a competitive sport than a expression of art. That mind set has developed into the paradigm of unconstructive criticism prevalent in today's youth. Yes, there is more video's and books, it's become literal university on youtube alone. My point: one of respect & sharing among real relationships.

  • I have All night wrong and there's something about this that sounds different. In fact, it sounds better.

  • Hobbies: "strangling giraffe (plural) with my left hand.."

  • @Steven4466

Yeah, he is the best Allan Holdsworth in the world if you catch my drift. I understand your point. Few have brought electric guitar to the technical limitations for shred as Allan. But there are so many styles, and in the end it is all music, and the players that find their own voice end up being the true masters regardless of technical prowess. But beyond that don't forget guys like Tommy Emanuelle (I know I spelled it wrong), or Doyle Dykes, or countless others.

  • @Steven4466 You're right, he should be knighted. Sir Allan Holdsworth.

  • @dorlandosonicNL I'll have to try some of it, I've never had it, but I had heard he brews his own beer. If it's as good as his guitar playing, it will be out of this world!

  • @dorlandosonicNL I completely understand though, so don't worry about : )

  • @dorlandosonicNL I'm not attempting to exactly belittle the guitarists, it's just some people have no idea of the talent that exists out there other than Slash.

  • Commercially successful guitarists like Slash have absolutely nothing on Allan Holdsworth. Allan is just on another plain of existence as far as guitarists are concerned. The man is a genius!

  • @Yarsh52 yea slash is pretty lame

holdsworth is immortal compared to him.

  • @Yarsh52 I saw Slash get on stage with Eric Johnson once. Let's just say it was'nt pretty. .

  • He is like the only player Yngwie Malmsteen has ever praised...

  • @torrid94 and with good reason!

as much as malm loves theory and technique, he probably cowers in fear of the mind and ridiculous left hand of holdsworth

  • Do any of you know what it was like to play allan's black steinberger right in front of the master? well i do. allan has thanked me more than once, but really, more importantly, thank you mate. next time the brews on me...,vaughn g.

  • @vgraham44

im SO jealous haha, lucky man

  • @TruNikkaz

That would rock to be able to know Holdsworth. What a total guitar god. Also, it is pointless to compare him to rock players. You know completely different genres of guitar. He is kind of in his own self created league.

  • when talking about improvising he is the master!!! and this one is my fav piece he's ever written. Chad Wakerman always blows you away. such a dynamic playing!

  • he makes the aether go music.

  • Holy shit the bass playing his hot on this track... compliments Allan's playing perfectly.

  • I agree! Personally myself however, I prefer a bass player that hooks more in with the drummer and really reinforces and brings depth to the drum hits, but in this case having the bass hooking and locking in with the guitar player (holdsworth) was fuckin brilliant! He was totally complimenting holdsworth with his smokin riffs. He did some really awsome arpegios in there too. Allan holdsworth was also very fuckin brilliant as usuall here too, and that guitar tone!! damn Whole song rocked. Cheers.

  • OMFG the chords from this song give me the most intense goosebumps.

  • Holdsworth is THE most original guitarist on the planet.

The way he looks at improvising, the way his hand bubbles out amazing fluid notes, the songs and chord progressions, it's just on a completely different plane than anyone else. this man's overall understanding of music is just so different from anyone else, it's almost like i'm hearing someone from another world play the guitar.

indeed, he is beyond all of us mere humans

  • The true master
