Andre Rieu puts on an absolutely marvelous program. I saw him live in Portland OR, and was amazed. For the "purists" on here complaining about this and that, I pity you. Your lives must be miserable, and I doubt you have much of a life. He's funny, energetic, an accomplished violinist, conductor, and his singers and orchestra are fabulous. I just wish you poor, boorish idiots would just pass what you despise by, and let the rest of us relish in a great concert.
Beyond the singing, I prefer this orchestral arrangement, over the quiet and sappy original. This particular arrangement in my opinion has guts and sorrowfulness to it, which the original doesn't due to it's calm orchestration. The version has backing vocals, a bass drum and brass which the original does have - ex. backing vocals - but uses the instruments much to little. All these things enhance the dreadfulness, that the words and music is trying to portray. Blessings to the orchestrator!
Once, the Met needed three tenors to go through one performance of Tristan... now, they need three tenors to go through one single aria! Incredible, and incredibly ugly and tasteless on top of it.
Ahem. Puccini's most beautiful aria and how not to do it...
And Monsieur Rieu, are you afraid somebody might forget you're a violinist if you put away the poor instrument and used both your hands for the "dramatic conducting" show?
;-)
It's amazing, though, how the beauty of the piece still shines through despite all the extra brass, percussion and backing vocals.

nice, but I like the original more... esp with one tenor...
Anyway, an off-key trumpet ruined it for me at 3:51.

Puccini just rolled over in his grave. It's amazing that despite the thorough abuse the music still survives. Rieu's circus at its 'best'.

Stimmt!
