Someone brought a colony of black squirrels to my hometown in south-central Michigan in the 1800s. They are still there and there aren't any other types present. Drive just 10 miles away and gray squirrels are found. It's strange...I've heard of a colony of white squirrels in other northern states (MN, maybe WI).

I like squirrels. They're tough, smart, fast & have show themselves to be adaptable to living, even prospering, alongside humans. Unlike most animals, unfortunately. For those interested, Wikipedia has a good article on black squirrels.

Where I live (Niagara County, NY) black squirrels aren't common but they're not rare either. I'm not far from Stratford, Ont. (one of my favorite places to visit) and they seem to have quite a few although the last couple of years I've noticed less.

@Icecats5000 We tied string around the release, drove about 8 miles north in a wooded area, and pulled the string. It was skittish around people (rightfully so) so we wanted it to feel comfortable leaving the cage.

In a trap a squirrel can get it's finger ripped off in the corners of the trap. Make sure they can't slip there finger down a slotted like area so that it might get pinched and stuck.

I love my black squirrel that's near my house. I've hand fed him peanuts and put extra on the ground. It's funny to watch him chase brown squirrels away from the nuts.

I have a tip for you trappers out there, that I found in a hunters guide for trapping:

Cover the trap with a tower or similiar stuff, so the animals you caught are not exposed anymore. This will reduce the stress a lot.
