Honestly, you all must have money or be on some highly paid scholarships to go to this university. Secondly, you all are selfish and the homeless should be more afraid of you. The're tent cities all over our counrty , so what makes your big expensive school so important? I understand that the students at this school care about their safety, but aparently there have been safety issues before the tent city became an issue.
A classic example of why the universities in this country needs to be bulldozed and replaced with manufacturing and heavy industries to put all people to work and feed their families.
Instead you got a bunch of snotty nose surban idiots with scholarships to get out of the house and booze it up and have sex all the time and be sluts and learn the 'benifits' of so-called 'globalization' and 'free trade' nonsense.
You don't want a tenty city on your campus? ...then stop GLOBALIZATION!
@genius2005 Just wait till something happens to those kids and they end up on the street. Everyone is already around 45000 in debt to gov, if they come collect it those girls will be homeless I'm sure they will not have enough in their back pocket because they are to busy paying off student loans and personal party debts. All it takes is one unfortunate event like ones father getting in a car wreck and all funding seizes. What is going to happen when China no longer accepts US dollar?
Tent city sounds like a great way to alienate a new group of potential students. Also, have any of you had a chance to see some of the homeless people around UW? There are some real interesting crusty folk who wonder around here. There are some shirtless guys who smoke meth on 45th street. I couldn't believe my eyes. I also got into a screaming match yesterday with a homeless lady and that was nothing but fun. I love being kept up at night by the mentally disabled. Now think about conceal carry
Homeless people aren't saints. A huge percentage of them are mentally ill. Tons of others are drug/alcohol addicts. Needless to say, this will result in an increase in crime and a decrease in campus safety.
I was actually considering living in my car freshman year to save money on a dorm. I could've just showered at the IMA, studied at the library, ate at the dining halls, etc.
I had to reconsider when I realized I would be subject to arrest or citation for sleeping in my car even if I paid for parking.
If you're going to make this opportunity available to the "homeless" on our campus why not make it available to students too?
I pay for a spot I can't even sleep in, they sleep there for free.
I'm sure if your family was so broke that you ACTUALLY resorted to sleeping in your car, UW would have worked something out in terms of financial aid. Now, seeing that you didn't end up taking that route shows that you are financially capable of buying housing, even though it was hard on your budget.
For the homeless, however, it is impossible to pay for housing, and so they are actually forced to take the route you only "considered." You think they choose to live in tents? Not a chance.
The point isn't whether I was forced to live in my car, the point is that I was forced NOT to live in my car even though that would have been my preference had there been a legal route available.
I'm already shelling out nearly $300 per quarter for that square of asphalt because the UW is prime real-estate. There are signs on the parking lot that say campers are subject to arrest, why should people with no affiliation to the university get to do what a student legally could not?
That's like saying why does a policeman get to carry a gun when a student cannot? The answer is because they have totally different needs.
Which is the point of my post. You do not have the same needs as a homeless person. You do not NEED to live on property that you haven't paid for. Homeless people, however, DO need to. They need to so much that they ARE willing to take that risk of being fined or arrested that you are able to avoid. So you can't compare unless you ARE homeless.
Can't say I particularly agree with your analogy. For one thing I strongly support concealed carry on campus as it is in the rest of the state of washington, and should be nationally, but that's another issue.
The needs of the homeless shouldn't be the university's concern, the needs of its students should be its sole consideration. If you read my earlier post I DID pay for access rights to the parking lot property, I was just forced to pay extra for a service I didn't need (dorms).
I think overall though, the university is doing its students a huge favor by showing the world how it is teaching them not just material found in textbooks, but by providing first-hand perspective on society's greatest challenges.
The cost to students is minimal. It's only a summer quarter in a parking lot off to the side of campus. The kind gesture will live forever in the pages of Tent City history (its Wikipedia page for instance). Sadly, this TC resistance is downright embarrassing.
I agree the clowns interviewed here don't do a great service to the movement. They could've found more articulate people to interview.
I'm here for my engineering degree, I see plenty of homeless on the ave. every day. I'm sure it sucks, but that's why churches and charities exist. If you want to donate feel free.
All this is really going to show the world is how a small but vocal group can stir up controversy in the midst of a budgetary crisis when the university least needs it.
I used to live directly across the street from the tent city earlier this academic year when it was located at 50th and 15th. I walked by the camp many times every single day and I can assure all of you that the people there were never less than kind and respectful.
The description of this video links to an article from the Daily that urges the opposition to TC3 to go to visit the Capitol Hill tent city to see what it's really like. I strongly second that suggestion. Everyone is welcome to their opinions but I'm hearing way too many pessimistic assumptions, stereotyping generalizations, and unchecked biases here as justification for why UW should not host the next tent city. Please be intelligent people and base your opinions on relevant experience.
Additionally, don't think that the UW owes you anything. You don't have to go to school here or live around here. You have options and the homeless really don't.
Stop acting like you're a school's customers, because that's not how it works. There are plenty of people who want to attend but can't, so don't act like you're doing the school a favor. There are plenty of people who would also pay, and would gladly take your spot. This is the weakest argument of the entire debate, yet we hear it over and over.
No, it's not a weak argument at all. The UW gives financial aid so generously that virtually anyone with the proper grades can attend. The homeless people who might live in a tent city usually aren't unlucky; they're usually addicted to drugs or mentally ill.
You guys realize that tent city has already been located on the NE corner of 15th and 45th, right? With no increase in crime?
And the proposed locations aren't even close to the "heavily trafficked" areas, anyway. The leading option is a part of the Husky Stadium parking lot.
I seriously doubt any of these people have ever been to a tent city. I have and I can tell you that they are not dangerous. They are normal human beings down on their luck. We have the space. Show a little compassion.
Doesn't tent city already live like a block away from campus? I aspire to attend UW for medical school and I have no problem with tent city being on campus!
I graduated from UW in 1996. What has happened to the student body in the last 13 years? Your money? I bet most of the chowderheads in this video don't pay a dime, but rather their folks do. Spare me... I can't figure out when UW students became so ignorant, petty, and unwilling to be part of the community. Oh, yeah, the ave... Well, part of going to school in an urban environment is being exposed to the "grit" of the city. If you podunks from dirt farm country don't get that, then take a hike.
None of these views are founded. Crimes doesn't increase. We wouldn't be paying for anything related to TC3. All, they need is one of our distant parking lots. This is one way UW can try and help the community.
Way to find the least intelligent people on campus to interview. Since when do we look to bros and bimbos to help us make decisions? Try to find someone with some statistics or something maybe? Maybe someone who is an authority on these types of issues? But good luck.
I think the biggest problem is no one has told UW students shit about what the tent city is actually going to be like, where it's going to be or who's going to live there. Then they passed this resolution to allow it without asking anyone if that was cool. What the fuck? Serious miscommunication. No wonder people are upset. How do I even make up my mind about this issue when all I know about it is basically stuff I've overheard.
All they are asking for is a parking lot. They are not asking for money, just a place where they can sleep. Homeless are people who for one reason or another do not have a home. They weren't born this way--at some point in your life you might find yourself on the streets, too. I hope that someone offers you a parking lot in that case. Remember when they were at the church...we didn't even notice them. And students on the council voted for this measure, too. That's your voice.
first I had to walk by the camp at that church everyday. it smelled and the people creep me out. also the council doesn't represent my voice. they are just trying to pass something "good"
also why do I have to justify this shit? I pay thousands of dollars a year to come here why should they get to live for free?
I don't know, why do you feel you have to justify it?
Someone voted on it, and you are upset because you disagree. If you feel the council doesn't represent your voice, you should pay more attention the next time your student representatives are up for a vote.
Also, you pay "thousands of dollars" for an education, not just to live there in a dorm room. They are living in a parking lot in tents. Show a little perspective.
I don't give a shit if they live in a parking lot. the same would apply to any place I have to pay money in order to live or use. That includes my house, my school, or a sports arena I care to go enjoy an evening. If I pay money to live or enjoy a service somewhere I feel it is extremely disrespectfully to let others come in and live or visit for free when it lowers the quality of the service or good I have paid for. In this case I am not comfortable with bums living on campus.
I would have the same feelings if they lived in my driveway or if they were allowed to sleep in the aisles at a baseball game. My feelings are further agitated when it is public information that other non-profit organizations have stepped up to host the tent city and there is no real need for the school to take this position.
What safety issues are there? I didn't know homeless people equaled a threat to humanity? As a matter of fact there seems to be more news about college crimes such as shooting, rapes, and minors being in possession of alcohol than homeless people attacking college kids. Wake up kids. The world isn't a utopia.
That is a little stereotypical there isn't it? So all homeless people are not only dangerous but all they do is stand around begging for money so they can go get drunk? My previous comment was based on misconception/ lack of knowledge. I admit that, after i read about this i started looking into it more and it didn't seem as horrible as a lot of people are percieving it. However it shoes to show how misinformed how students are really about this whole situation. they assume the city will be in redsquare, when they would most likely be hidden away in a parking lot... My initial concern was regardin the ave rats. I would hate to see them migrate up to campus
from this. I hate how the ave is already filled with them. about the begging for money / alcohol thing it has happened way to many times to me. Its an assumption from experience take it or leave it its just an opinion
____
ignore the typos grammar errors etc you can tell how my brain is dead from finals/ projects
this is not the students problem, so why is it being forced onto them? do they not have a voice? it is their money that will be wasted on this "project"
the primary focus needs to be on the students. they are the ones who are paying a lot of money and expect things like a good educational enivronment, this is why we go to school. how is focusing the little resources the school has on vagrants helping the students? it isnt, and it is just irresponsible.
tent city does not belong on the campus of a university. there should be no debate, because having it on campus is completely irresponsible, and those who are trying to make it happen should lose their jobs.
I like tent cities too. but, the problem i find is that the money has to come from somewhere. if it's at a church, they will front the money, provide food at times, showers, electricity. Where are the facilities? what are they going to do when the homeless are not working and are found using the library and other buildings. in redmond, i found the homeless taking over the library, and just sleeping a computers and desks, when clearly others needed to use them.
70,000 people come on and off campus everyday, it is the seventh largest 'city' in the state of Washington! There have GOT to be other possible venues for Tent City than the UW. Also I am a tour guide and this is going to severely hurt Admissions, no one is going to want to come here! Also there will be costs associated with Tent City and with the budget cuts.....we can't afford to spend any more money not on student's EDUCATION!
I'd love to hear some opinions from UWPD officers in regards to this tent city. They're the ones who will have to respond to the inevitable complaints and safety issues.
I pay $275 a quarter for a little square of pavement to park my car, but if you're homeless you suddenly get rights to take up prime UW campus areas for free? This is outrageous.
Forget paying rent or on-campus housing, maybe some students should set up a tent-city and see how long that lasts.
If you're going to put a video together going against Tent City (which I agree, it shouldn't be on campus) at least get some intelligent, well spoken people to be in it.
