Anita is not a bitch. Her love was killed. She's so upset and devastated, and worst, the man who killed him is with her "sister". I think Anita is one of the bravest character, because after all this, she still tries to help Maria be with with Tony, even after Tony killed Bernardo.
This has nothing to do with Glee. I don't understand why people come to watch this stuff and then complain about how bad this generation is and how bad Glee is. What does that have to do with the song or the musical? Nothing, so just enjoy it. It pisses me off when all I want to do is listen to a nice song, and I see those comments. Your just looking for something to complain about. Can't we forget about glee and just agree that the singers are talented and the play is wonderful?
first off 25 people are smokin' crack if they dont like West Side Story, its a damn classic for Christ's sake. And NOT down playing Glee BUT THIS is WEST SIDE STORY. This classic legend was here WAY longer before Glee came about and there should be no reason to "bring" anyone to this, but I guess for the younger generation I suppose Glee stands as a catalyst, which leaves me to the question why is my generation or older generations, not turning our younger gen to the classics? Step it up guys!
My mom took me to this movie when it first came out, I was 5 years old, it stuck with me for my next 50 years, I dont know what it was about it, but it was like a peak experience that forever is burned deeply within my soul. I never would ever watch it again, so I wouldn't spoil that forever moment.... and believe me in the 70's it was rock & roll, drugs, jails, prison and the madness of addictions that still haunts me now. But I still got that movie, just me and my mom.
Although I know the vocal is technically better with a pro singer, I feel really bad that Rita didn't get to use HER voice for the song. It seems like the emotion she would've put into it would've been more real.

Wow, why every video of a musical, song or clip we've seen (and heard) in Glee always lead to that kinda argument ? I would have been really pissed if Glee had made disappear the original songs because people would prefer an easier access to them, through the show, like for "Harry Potter", I would hate the movies if people who have seen them doesn't read the book because they "already know the story" , but if Glee makes discover all these amazing songs to people, I think it's pretty amazing !

This version is better in my opinion because Rita Moreno has more emotion in her vocals and Marni Nixon's vocals are astounding even though Lea Michele is amazing aswell

Finally on Glee they decided to sacrifice diction for the sake of better singing and the film version focuses more on the diction. You can think Glee's vocals are better but it's not a fair comparison.

West Side Story shows people that true love can conquer all, and i'm not sure if you've watched all of it, but Tony didn't mean to kill Bernardo and doesn't understand why Maria still loves him. Of course its frustrating, it's not like everything is nice and easy for the characters. And as far as unrealistic goes...have you read any Shakespeare at all? Realism does not determine the beauty of something. West Side Story (as well as Romeo and Juliet) are beautiful classics.

@xxibeckyxx Well, Marni Nixon, who is heard here singing for Natalie Wood, is quite a well known and very accomplished Operatic Soprano so I'm not sure quite what you mean by "they're not amazing singers" and Betty Wand, who sang here for Rita Moreno, is also known for singing for many movies, radio and television.
Marni Nixon has perfect pitch, and has performed on stage, opera houses, countless recordings and of course sang for Natalie Wood, Audrey Hepburn and Deborah Kerr. Amazing she is.
Sometimes I wonder, it's been said many times that NATALIE WOOD wanted very much to do her own singing in this film. However, Natalie's singing voice was not up to the vocal demands of this score - and in this number particularly, I wonder if Natalie truly thought she could handle it vocally - was she not aware of her own vocal limitations?
As far as I know, it was agreed right from the start that she was unable to sing this piece, and so Natalie Wood filmed this song to Marni Nixon's voice. But she shot "I Feel Pretty" and "Tonight" to her own voice and was dubbed afterwards. Natalie Wood always knew that she would be dubbed for high notes and operatic moments - but little did she know that they would throw everything she had recorded out of the window.
@RobinGoodFellovv Yes, what you say makes sense although there are conflicting stories. Russ Tamblin who played Riff claims that Natalie recorded "all the songs" and that she might have gotten away with it (I doubt that) - and Rita Moreno claims that Natalie did the filming to her own singing. I think the most Natalie could have sung would have been the low note portions of the simplier tunes, such as "I feel Pretty", and even that was a stretch. Robert Wise claims that Natalie understood.

@xxibeckyxx Well, Marni Nixon, who is heard here singing for Natalie Wood, is quite a well known and very accomplished Operatic Soprano so I'm not sure quite what you mean by "they're not amazing singers" and Betty Wand, who sang here for Rita Moreno, is also known for singing for many movies, radio and television.
Marni Nixon has perfect pitch, and has performed on stage, opera houses, countless recordings and of course sang for Natalie Wood, Audrey Hepburn and Deborah Kerr. Amazing she is.

Sometimes I wonder, it's been said many times that NATALIE WOOD wanted very much to do her own singing in this film. However, Natalie's singing voice was not up to the vocal demands of this score - and in this number particularly, I wonder if Natalie truly thought she could handle it vocally - was she not aware of her own vocal limitations?

As far as I know, it was agreed right from the start that she was unable to sing this piece, and so Natalie Wood filmed this song to Marni Nixon's voice. But she shot "I Feel Pretty" and "Tonight" to her own voice and was dubbed afterwards. Natalie Wood always knew that she would be dubbed for high notes and operatic moments - but little did she know that they would throw everything she had recorded out of the window.

@RobinGoodFellovv Yes, what you say makes sense although there are conflicting stories. Russ Tamblin who played Riff claims that Natalie recorded "all the songs" and that she might have gotten away with it (I doubt that) - and Rita Moreno claims that Natalie did the filming to her own singing. I think the most Natalie could have sung would have been the low note portions of the simplier tunes, such as "I feel Pretty", and even that was a stretch. Robert Wise claims that Natalie understood.

Ms. NIXON: You know, I have no recollection except it might have been one of the duets--and maybe Rita would know--that was planned for me to do all along. So maybe she was singing to my voice during the filming. I've forgotten that completely.
Ms. MORENO: You know what, Marni? I think your voice was on that one...
Ms. NIXON: Yeah, I think it was all me.
