Either I've lost my mind or all you guys admiring the guitar solo at the end are too blind to notice the real gem of this song - the beauty of the melody before that!.....
In reference to my last comment , Dylan inspired lyrics and vocals , Knophler inspired guitar, dosen't get any better than this! I go we the perfection comments.
Anyway, I do think that the ending solo is the best of the Dire Straits area. So well constructed, a master piece! I imagine the engineers in the studio couldn't believe it! Damnit, that guy knows what is doing! ;)
For some reason the lyrics: 'the faster they get out of town
leaving make up stains and the tears' remind me of when I left home, driving away to college, I played this song for 2 hours straight. Amazing, amazing song.
Reminds me on an early summer / late spring day at the beginning of the 90's.
In the high-school I had to write an extra exam of biology probably, not to fail the year, and this song was playing in my head saying: "if you are out of this place, the best summer is coming to you". It was true :-)
This era of song was the theme of my youth and only now Iam older I see just how atttuned it was to the way my generation was, still love it, still the truth, in fact it's timeless.
This era of song was the theme of my youth and only now Iam older I se just how atttuned it was to the way my generation was, still love it, still the truth, in fact it's timeless.
It starts out the most chirpy, happy sounding song, perhaps some light relief at the end of a darkish album, hey is that the Taxi theme? Hmm, story sounds not so funny but the music is happy enough. Then lyrically it gathers bile of Dylanesque proportions circa Blood on the Tracks, the music follows, the story gets harder and meaner , until at the end it sounds like a slasher flick, and the guitar solo at the end is just plain nasty.
@mshanahanz i couldn't agree more, this song gets down and that's all can be said..mark tears it up...what a huge contribution these guys made to music
Remember getting a copied version of their first album on tape (the stuff that actually consisted of tape) from a friend as a kid in the late 70's thinking it was called 'Day Streets'... Since that day I've been hooked, and sadly music of such quality is rare these days.
When I hear it, I am always sorry not being able to turn up the volume more on my laptop! It reminds me on times after failed high-school exams (early 90's), I just put this in, and everything was fine again... (Of course finished HS since! XD)
For me, as the Progressive Rock type of Dire Straits fans, this is their all-time masterpiece on their very best album. Here, Mark could really close the compositorial gap to the "eternal trinity" of Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd. The text is certainly Dylan style but the basic tune breathes the spirit of the great Jon Anderson.
@cornelisX Most of our generation, anyway. I still have hope for general music getting better in the future, or at least for the real talented musicians to shine.
@MissCartoonist Disagreed :D 'cause I've never seen a young girl, who has ever listened to the music of Dire Straits. In addition, I've never knew a young girl who knew whose song is It never rains, at all. Lot of my familiars has never heard the name of Mark Knopfler! I'm 22 and I'm also an oddity with loving DS and Knopfler.
@MissCartoonist I've always said that Dire Straits are great driving music. When I worked on the road It would be 3:00 in the morning, I would put them in and drive into the night.
