  • God of the guitar... Mark Knopfler...

  • That guitar is talkin to me!!

    =O

  • This is what we call creativity,,,,,,,Mark knopfeler & Bob dylon to me are the eighth wonder

  • Mark rarely uses foul words, but when he does - they are powerful.

  • Either I've lost my mind or all you guys admiring the guitar solo at the end are too blind to notice the real gem of this song - the beauty of the melody before that!.....

  • In reference to my last comment , Dylan inspired lyrics and vocals , Knophler inspired guitar, dosen't get any better than this! I go we the perfection comments.

  • you can hear the inspiration of Dylan in this one, Love the Man love the music!!!

  • This solo at the end pushed me into guitar playing. Thank you Guitar God Mark Knopfler

  • Great and Powerfull end its got the energy of a live Performance...the engineers in the sound studio have done a great job

  • @fetass100 not the engineers - its the musicians. You can have the best engineers - engineers don't make music.

  • Anyway, I do think that the ending solo is the best of the Dire Straits area. So well constructed, a master piece! I imagine the engineers in the studio couldn't believe it! Damnit, that guy knows what is doing! ;)

  • love over gold for me.

  • you can't miss with dire straits

  • 4:42 to end----> perfection

  • Knofler is a musical tycoon .

  • One of my fav sunday songs. This song is just so unforgettable.

  • i love this song..

  • Heard this one 25 years ago, and still in my mind. This is the song I whistle when I'm happy. Moreover, the song changes a lot from beginning to end

  • The first Dire Straits album that I've heard. It happened in 1896. Fell in love with the band insantly.

  • @Ramaz1969 Wanted to say 1986, of course. :-)))

  • 6:18 <3

  • another masterpiece

  • I Gather Mark Knopfler used to an lecture at a local college of mine before he made it big i understand he stood he taught english - no end of talent

  • For some reason the lyrics: 'the faster they get out of town

leaving make up stains and the tears' remind me of when I left home, driving away to college, I played this song for 2 hours straight. Amazing, amazing song.

  • wow

  • Reminds me on an early summer / late spring day at the beginning of the 90's.

In the high-school I had to write an extra exam of biology probably, not to fail the year, and this song was playing in my head saying: "if you are out of this place, the best summer is coming to you". It was true :-)

  • ooohhh boy the best music I ever heard in all my fucking good life thanks a hundred to make this posible

  • god i love dire straits and im 17! from newcastle :D

  • @nufcadamc1994 congratulattions my friend !!!!!!you know about good music¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • pra mim a melhor banda pop ..dire straits....

  • the best track of the album i love specially the instrumental end

  • i always listen to the car was the one in the car

  • This era of song was the theme of my youth and only now Iam older I see just how atttuned it was to the way my generation was, still love it, still the truth, in fact it's timeless.

  • Love this.

  • I have this on vinyl, and damn, the quality of this recording is great!!

  • It starts out the most chirpy, happy sounding song, perhaps some light relief at the end of a darkish album, hey is that the Taxi theme? Hmm, story sounds not so funny but the music is happy enough. Then lyrically it gathers bile of Dylanesque proportions circa Blood on the Tracks, the music follows, the story gets harder and meaner , until at the end it sounds like a slasher flick, and the guitar solo at the end is just plain nasty.

  • @mshanahanz i couldn't agree more, this song gets down and that's all can be said..mark tears it up...what a huge contribution these guys made to music

  • most forgotten genius rock band

  • I love this song! And it suits the weather today ... it just comes pouring down.

  • Remember getting a copied version of their first album on tape (the stuff that actually consisted of tape) from a friend as a kid in the late 70's thinking it was called 'Day Streets'... Since that day I've been hooked, and sadly music of such quality is rare these days.

  • The song of a billion dreams

  • crazy solo? yes

  • When I hear it, I am always sorry not being able to turn up the volume more on my laptop! It reminds me on times after failed high-school exams (early 90's), I just put this in, and everything was fine again... (Of course finished HS since! XD)

  • @Kornix11 its worth it to buy some speakers i say

  • My favourite. The beginning always reminds of the tv show - taxi

  • i love his lick at 4.23. so suits the lyric there.

  • The best song of Dire straits

  • @Guilherme9640 all dire straits song is the best! :-))))))))))))

  • The best song of Dire straits

  • love over gold from the vinyle - its a orgazm for brain....

  • Siempre existirán los Dire Straits...........

  • I used to play this in my Renault 4 in the 80's! Love it...

  • For me, as the Progressive Rock type of Dire Straits fans, this is their all-time masterpiece on their very best album. Here, Mark could really close the compositorial gap to the "eternal trinity" of Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd. The text is certainly Dylan style but the basic tune breathes the spirit of the great Jon Anderson.

  • The lyrics are very Dylanesque.

  • it s always nostalgique song.

  • I'm a 17 year old girl and I LOVE playing this song while I'm driving.

  • @MissCartoonist It's a great song! but it's seems like our generation doesn't know what good music is anymore...

  • @cornelisX Most of our generation, anyway. I still have hope for general music getting better in the future, or at least for the real talented musicians to shine.

  • @MissCartoonist Well said :D! I really hope that wil be true but we will have to make it come true not just sit back and wait.

  • @cornelisX Agreed. :)

  • @MissCartoonist girl you know what is good music

  • @MissCartoonist I think I should get to know you... :D

  • @kislennox Meh, you're not missing out on much XD

  • this is the man at his best - good choice

  • @MissCartoonist Girls aged 17 shouldn't be driving at all.

  • @mylomaster

    AMEN

  • @mylomaster I live in New Zealand. The driving age here is 16. So I'm all good, regardless of my gender : D

  • @MissCartoonist I know, it was just a random comment by me, I'm sorry.

But don't you start speeding after 5:00, or start to lose concentration? That solo takes control!!

  • @mylomaster It's okay :) And I must admit that it does make me wanna drive fast but I'm always careful not to speed!

  • @MissCartoonist lol, looks like Mr. Knopfler likes driving too, found a vid called 'Mark Knopfler - Speedvision Documentary'

Maybe driving inspired him to compose this song haha

  • @MissCartoonist good for u.

  • @MissCartoonist I've always said that Dire Straits are great driving music. When I worked on the road It would be 3:00 in the morning, I would put them in and drive into the night.

  • @RAYNEALAVERY I imagine that would have been a very pleasant drive :D

  • @MissCartoonist wtf you can only drive at 18, outlaw bitch.

  • @poetz123 dumbass in usa you can drive at da age of 16

  • @poetz123 You somekind of retard or what?

  • @aWoodenBoy no, i just know the laws, like the one that states that you can only drive at 18 years old.

  • @poetz123 In some countries yes. But in some countries you can drive at the age of 16. Not everyone lives whe you live you know...

  • Beautiful song. Thank you for the studio version!

  • I love the perfect cline from a quiet rhythm to a more aggressive, psychodelic beat. Awesome!
