Hey I got a peral drumset and it sounds like crap... I dont like it. Then my drum teacher his drumset sounds amazing and his drum set is cheap... but I notcied he stuck paper inside his bass drum, snare, etc. And does that actually make it sound better?
When I tighten my lugs they sometimes get stuck and they feel really tight when they're actually not, is there anything I can do about it and would the 'torque key' still work?
@MrBigJakeJT Why are you talking about cocaine? This is a drum video, you idiot. Don't you have any inspiration besides getting high Stupid? Stay on drugs since that all you got going for yourself.

Those torque keys are for loosers! They are rubbish. You NEED to learn to train your ears to recognise tones and pitches (even for a drummer). That way you WILL become a better musician. You don't really seem to know what you are doing mate to be brutally frank about it. Oh well...happy drumming.
Didn't you hear what he said at the beginning? About it being his way, and he's not some drum tech tuning genius. He was basically admitting what you've said to everyone else. He never said this was the right way to do it or best way. Just listen to the guy and appreciate what he's doing.
@GJW120 the thing about pushing the fist in is ok but don't push to hard, just so you can see the wrinkles, then remove all wrinkles and the start the tuning proces. and the pitch of the drum is all preference but different drums sounds best at different pitch.
3:57 - 4:04 = HILARIOUS !! lol oh and question: the drum heads @ my church r h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e (in terms of tunage).. plus, they're pretty old heads. if i was to do that same thing with the fist but with the old heads, do u think they would sound any better ?
Ha Ha... most likely not. I am sure they are waaaaaay stretched!!! Get the church to invest in some new ones. Take up a drum head collection. Ha Ha. RVP
Im one of those drummers that sit there and listen to the pitch ... sorry man i tune to an actual pitch ... torque keys and drumdials are not accurate and are stupid waste of money .. BOB GATZEN taught me everything i know years ago! PITCH PITCH PITCH ... learn pitches!!!!!!!!
I've watched most of your video's and your big on the whole "This is my way, and i like it" and i like it =D i've adopted most of your tech's but im still working on it... whats your oppinion on guitar hero world tour drumming...lol =D
my opinion is that this guy in the video is a great drummer, he just has some poor tuning habits or philosophies I dont see mean anything. I mean why dont people think that over tightening the NEW head would "break it in" or stretch it better than fisting it? It would make more reasonable sense if you are into "pre stretching" or "breaking in" heads that way.
I learned this technique years ago. It has worked great for me. As with anything there are several ways you can do things. Right or wrong in some peoples minds it works for me and I shared with others what works for me. I am sure if you speak to 20 different drummers you will come up with 20 different tuning techniques. RVP
you have a round drum but stretching it with a square uneven fist. how is this better than letting the head naturally break in by it self. you DONT HAVE TO stretch guitar strings. it's just if you dont then you will have to tune the strings up a few times before they stablize. same with a drum head. but a fist or open hand stretching? how even across the head or shell is that? the only reason to do this is when you're already at a gig when changing your head and need it to stay in tune during..
just tune it up. if it stretches and fall down tune just tune it up again. when it is stable then you know at least you have stretched it even around the bearing edge because you havent fisted it. all in all you have spent less time or the same time with tuning the thing and more time playing.
too much needless stress on the shell by fisting it. just put the head on. even the tension on each lug. tap at each lug to get consistancy. when the head tunes down after playing a while, just tune it back up. A time or two of this and you're done. MORE EVEN STRETCHING ON HEAD THIS WAY. NO NEEDLESS UNDUE STRESS ON ANY PART. MUCH LESS TIME TINKERING WITH DRUM. HEADS LAST LONGER. LESS STRESS ON SHELL AND BEARING EDGE. sometimes with an "evenly" tuned drum one screw will turn easier than another
there are too many "drum tuning instructional videos" on youtube by teenage "experts" that been drumming for 6 months. I disagree on this method also. the shape of your fist if it is "stretching " the head is inconsistant so why do it to begin with. the "torque wrench" used, notice he had to go back and loosen one screw because the wrench is only as effective as the integrety of the threads. one screw will thread tighter than another even tho the head is not. dont use that method either.
so i just started playing so i'm very new to tuning... i've been experimenting. my friend "tuned" my drums so i can start playing but i feel the floor tome resonates so much i feel it overpowers the rest of the kit... any suggestions?
If all drums are tuned correctly, the floor tom can't be the loudest. It's the lowest in pitch. Higher pitches project more. You've got the other two tuned wrong. I
I have one of those RhythmTech keys and love it. The Regal Tip "Nealy (sp)" key is good to but will eventually strip out (plastic). After I started using the torque keys I would get comments on my drum tone from drummers with kits much more expensive than mine. Completely approve.
then why do people have to get the bearing edges touched up. just a thought. also i completly understand the concept of seating the head just looked a little rough on the bearing edges. i could be wrong.. also we watch the video but never got to hear the final product of the tom.....
okay that video was a complete waiste of time. not so worried about messing up the head when you fist the it but what about the bearing edges on the drum. it is wood after all not metal
just keep turning them all untill you like the sound, but you should really hit the drum like an inch away from each of the lugs and make them each sound the same.
I just bought an Evans emad 2 bass drum head for my really cheap kit and it's made it sound professional. Took my old crappy head off, peeled back the protective beater pad things and discovered that i'd beaten a small hole in the head. Good timing in buying a new head then :)
cleric. I'm no drummer, but I know drums make pitch. The best that can happen, is you make your drums tuned to E. Your snare top skin should be tuned to the pitch of E and the lower skin of that snare should be a low octave to the E of the top skin. This is what i have been told. My drummer takes his snare to the local drum center and 5 mins later its tuned perfect. That last about 2 band night, then its him back to farting around for hours trying to tune. I guess I will have to learn for him.
Very cool video. I'm playing V-Drums these days, so head tension is more for feel than sound, as everything is sampled. However, this totally takes the mystery out of acoustic tuning. And what a great idea the torque key is! Good stuff.
But when i play on my snare drum it gives a weak aftersound from the "chains" and i dont like that. That sound even comes up sometimes when i play the toms or bass drum. What should i do??? plz answer someone or link to a video or something that shows what to do.
all i did to get rid of that is to tighten the snare (chains) heaps, so they barely move, then itightened the bottom head a fair bit, and the top head so it barely moves when u press on it with ur hand, and by doing that (its probly not right) but i get a nice crack out of it every time, and if my toms make it rattle, i retune it till it doesnt, basically i see a snare as one of the main drums, so u want it to sound spot on all the time
i have the Key but its shit cuz its only on one tention allthough it has many numbers on but dosent make a diffrence and when i turn its still really tight. i meen evern the looses gage is amazingly tight. i may not be useing it right but iv had it for half a year and still no progress. grrrrrrrrrrr :( disapointing
Turn your key backwards around and around. When I first got my key the dial was really loose. Even on 9 it would let go at finger tension. I just turned it all the way around a few times until it started to seem right.
kk will try it man thanks. i just want a RnB souns out of them so i tryed and never got the proper sound. i cant tune from ear cuz it takes to long and hard lol so will try your way buddy.
the art of tuning is in learning what to listen for. thus developing a good ear is essential for all who seek a true understanding of a drums tone and ranges. tork keys can get you where you want to go maybe quicker, but you still have to tweak them a bit.
tuneing is scray for me i did it a lot but still not good at it so if i happin to hear a good tone i stick with it and record with it how much are thoses torq keys cost ??
i don't know if any one has replied to you on this question yet, but i would suggest turning your bottom head slightly tighter than your top head, or about even.
I had a tool called a "Torque Tool", which I began finding with peoples' drums, who either because they were cheap drums or hadn't been greased regularly over their life, starting giving false clicks as you can imagine. But your vids, playing and sound are VERY professional and you sound like a really cool guy! I was just sharing some info. Rock on!
Torque key can be inaccurate though if lugs haven't been maintained to provide equal tension at threads, which is indicated when you have to revisit the lugs to match the tones. I have a Drum Dial and don't use it much as I can tune quite efficiently with a standard key and use the equal turns method as you do. But I think the dial gives a quicker result in a pinch as it does give you the true tension right away.
You asked for it! You got it! Vanz Drumming Extreme Drum Set Techniques with Randy Van Patten is now available via Download! Full Size Hi-Res Quicktime Movies. Visit
That torque key approach assumes all the lugs go in/out the same all the way around. Sometimes they don't which means the lug receiver need to be cleaned lubed. I wonder which method is more accurate and reliable - this or using a drum dial?
you need a tool

Ill try that, but what about the other side of the drum? (Bottom Skin)

i have the Key but its shit cuz its only on one tention allthough it has many numbers on but dosent make a diffrence and when i turn its still really tight. i meen evern the looses gage is amazingly tight. i may not be useing it right but iv had it for half a year and still no progress. grrrrrrrrrrr :( disapointing

Turn your key backwards around and around. When I first got my key the dial was really loose. Even on 9 it would let go at finger tension. I just turned it all the way around a few times until it started to seem right.
You should do the same, Just the opposite way.

the art of tuning is in learning what to listen for. thus developing a good ear is essential for all who seek a true understanding of a drums tone and ranges. tork keys can get you where you want to go maybe quicker, but you still have to tweak them a bit.

i don't think pushing until u hear cracking is a good idea. iv'e seen the resin give way
before and the head will seperate from the rim
then u will be buying a new head...so be carefull

hey randy, i never know how i should tune the bottom heads on my toms. Should it be really tight or what do you sudgest??? thnx man, love your vids
stefanod2402 3 years ago
i don't know if any one has replied to you on this question yet, but i would suggest turning your bottom head slightly tighter than your top head, or about even.

it all depends on the sound your looking for. if you want high sound then yes higher. but if you want a more beefy sound then go lower

the stock heads that came with my pearl vision set were 2 ply. i tuned em up and they sound great. i think i might get the ec2 clears.

Rock on!
Jjjj2828 3 years ago
Torque key can be inaccurate though if lugs haven't been maintained to provide equal tension at threads, which is indicated when you have to revisit the lugs to match the tones. I have a Drum Dial and don't use it much as I can tune quite efficiently with a standard key and use the equal turns method as you do. But I think the dial gives a quicker result in a pinch as it does give you the true tension right away.

you talk fast. haha

That torque key approach assumes all the lugs go in/out the same all the way around. Sometimes they don't which means the lug receiver need to be cleaned lubed. I wonder which method is more accurate and reliable - this or using a drum dial?
imispgh 3 years ago
your ear if you are good at that is the most reliable thing.
