  • you need a tool

  • Hey I got a peral drumset and it sounds like crap... I dont like it. Then my drum teacher his drumset sounds amazing and his drum set is cheap... but I notcied he stuck paper inside his bass drum, snare, etc. And does that actually make it sound better?

  • My heads flopping..... Giggity...

  • When I tighten my lugs they sometimes get stuck and they feel really tight when they're actually not, is there anything I can do about it and would the 'torque key' still work?

  • Great tip, I can't tap tune each lug either.

  • cocain is an amazing drug

  • @MrBigJakeJT correction, "Cocaine's a hell of a drug!"

  • @MrBigJakeJT Why are you talking about cocaine? This is a drum video, you idiot. Don't you have any inspiration besides getting high Stupid? Stay on drugs since that all you got going for yourself.

  • my head is flopping too;)

  • it was your parents, santa or the music store..who was it??:O

  • i can perfectly tuning a marching snare or a set of marching basses or tenors, but outside of drum corps and onto the drum set (need help) haha

  • Ahhhh, I've got that kindof key, but never seen the point xD I didnt know what it was good 2 use for : p Thanks for showing, now I can easily tune my drums without eartuning :D

  • Any advice for snare tuning?

  • Cocaine's a hell of a drug...

  • does it matter about the bottem skin? what does that do? cause i have no bottem skin and cerious about what it does, mine sound a lil roomy and high,

  • what kind of key do you have and how much was it?

  • When u said this is that way I do it, it may not be the best way... Yeah that's exactly from a yamaha tuning video... Along with the technique...

  • what kind of snare do you have?

  • Lol. "Put together by your parents........or by Santa Claus...."

  • lol " And now my head is kinda flopping"

  • You should never loosen that much I don't think.. it ruins the sound for later tuning, only loosen slightly :x

  • There is no way i'm pushing my head down like that.

  • 2:11 Thats what she said!

  • @koppergtr lolololololololololololol

  • @Spammy5 LOL

  • For anyone who is absolutely new to drumming, as Van states there is no fear of damaging the head with your hands. Some of them are made from Dupont Mylar. The same material is used in some bullet proof vests.

  • MY LUGS ARE LOOOOOOOSE

  • my toms broke....

  • Didn't you hear what he said at the beginning? About it being his way, and he's not some drum tech tuning genius. He was basically admitting what you've said to everyone else. He never said this was the right way to do it or best way. Just listen to the guy and appreciate what he's doing.

  • @GJW120 the thing about pushing the fist in is ok but don't push to hard, just so you can see the wrinkles, then remove all wrinkles and the start the tuning proces. and the pitch of the drum is all preference but different drums sounds best at different pitch.

  • the first 18 seconds of this video is the best

  • omg he is phsycho! just kidding. I got mine for Christmas. thanx for the video!

  • hey whats better for dampening: pinstripes or EC2's

  • How about a tennis ball rather than the fist?

I like your not too techy approach.

  • Only problem with those Torque tuning keys is that if the threads in the lugs are stiff or damaged it is impossible to use this technique.

  • are those aquarian dumheads, if so what kind?

  • Evans EC2s on the toms I think

  • Yeah, and they're coated.

  • Evans EC2 Coated on the toms.

And I think its an Evans powersenter reverse dot on the snare.

  • hey man go easy on other drummers who use their ear to fine tune.

  • i always tune all the reso. heads first then the batter, its alot easier to tell whats in tune or not.

  • hey mate,

great vids! they help a lot.

though the fist thing you do, i would suggest doing that when you have some tension on the head first. less chance of the head warping.

  • Randy thank you so much for all your tips & great videos. Don't ever stop making them! :)

btw your china in the back looks awesome... Like it's made from some kind of liquid or digitally enhanced:)

  • What you're seeing is the reflection of a ceiling fan.

  • hey man do you know where i can get a torque key thanks

  • this helps alot thank you alot

the little solo is really cool

  • 3:57 - 4:04 = HILARIOUS !! lol oh and question: the drum heads @ my church r h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e (in terms of tunage).. plus, they're pretty old heads. if i was to do that same thing with the fist but with the old heads, do u think they would sound any better ?

  • Ha Ha... most likely not. I am sure they are waaaaaay stretched!!! Get the church to invest in some new ones. Take up a drum head collection. Ha Ha. RVP

  • 2:39 O.O omg...

  • "My head is kinda flopping now, You see that?" LOL

  • Im one of those drummers that sit there and listen to the pitch ... sorry man i tune to an actual pitch ... torque keys and drumdials are not accurate and are stupid waste of money .. BOB GATZEN taught me everything i know years ago! PITCH PITCH PITCH ... learn pitches!!!!!!!!

  • I've watched most of your video's and your big on the whole "This is my way, and i like it" and i like it =D i've adopted most of your tech's but im still working on it... whats your oppinion on guitar hero world tour drumming...lol =D

  • LOL Chipmunk

  • add some exercises for speeding up the left hand.

  • lol your cymbal at the top looks like a sink bowl haha

  • 2:11 sounds bad haha!

    Great vid by the way!

  • my opinion is that this guy in the video is a great drummer, he just has some poor tuning habits or philosophies I dont see mean anything. I mean why dont people think that over tightening the NEW head would "break it in" or stretch it better than fisting it? It would make more reasonable sense if you are into "pre stretching" or "breaking in" heads that way.

  • I learned this technique years ago. It has worked great for me. As with anything there are several ways you can do things. Right or wrong in some peoples minds it works for me and I shared with others what works for me. I am sure if you speak to 20 different drummers you will come up with 20 different tuning techniques. • i have a ? is he da drummer for van halen its a stupid question but can someone aswer plis ?

  • no, he isn't.

the drummer for Van Halen is Alex Van Halen.

this guy actually has a vid of him playing Hot for Teacher by Van Halen, lol.

so it's funny you should say that. lol

    i can see the misunderstanding.

  • oh ok well thnk u mate for answering

i taght it was him beacuse of hes name lol

  • no problem.

ha, yeah, his name would probably throw me off too.

  • Well to me, this makes sense.

Its kinda like with guitars, when you put on a new set of strings, you stretch them slightly so that they dont keep going out of tune.

  • you have a round drum but stretching it with a square uneven fist. how is this better than letting the head naturally break in by it self. you DONT HAVE TO stretch guitar strings. it's just if you dont then you will have to tune the strings up a few times before they stablize. same with a drum head. but a fist or open hand stretching? how even across the head or shell is that? the only reason to do this is when you're already at a gig when changing your head and need it to stay in tune during..

  • you don't have to, but it helps

  • its a waste of time fisting your new head.

just tune it up. if it stretches and fall down tune just tune it up again. when it is stable then you know at least you have stretched it even around the bearing edge because you havent fisted it. all in all you have spent less time or the same time with tuning the thing and more time playing.

  • but fisting the new head takes only a few seconds and you wont have to worry about taking time tuning it later

  • too much needless stress on the shell by fisting it. just put the head on. even the tension on each lug. tap at each lug to get consistancy. when the head tunes down after playing a while, just tune it back up. A time or two of this and you're done. MORE EVEN STRETCHING ON HEAD THIS WAY. NO NEEDLESS UNDUE STRESS ON ANY PART. MUCH LESS TIME TINKERING WITH DRUM. HEADS LAST LONGER. LESS STRESS ON SHELL AND BEARING EDGE. sometimes with an "evenly" tuned drum one screw will turn easier than another

  • Well his EC2s sound fantastic so this must work well I guess.

  • I recently switched to the Evans EC2's myself. They do sound fantastic. They sound fantastic without trying to push a fist thru them also.

His bass drum sounds like a concrete cinder block tho with no resonance or tonal sustain. his bass drum sound is what I am most unimpressed with.

  • there are too many "drum tuning instructional videos" on youtube by teenage "experts" that been drumming for 6 months. I disagree on this method also. the shape of your fist if it is "stretching " the head is inconsistant so why do it to begin with. the "torque wrench" used, notice he had to go back and loosen one screw because the wrench is only as effective as the integrety of the threads. one screw will thread tighter than another even tho the head is not. dont use that method either.

  • he had to go back to do it because he set it on the wrong setting so it was too high...

or am i looking at something else?

  • i got scared when you push your fist that way

  • hey man,

my snare drum(yamaha rydeen series) sounds likes a bucket...

i wonder how will make it sounds like a rock type snare drum...

    cheers

    Hadinata

  • check out bob gatzen'"s videos. they are by far the best on youtube. plus he wrights back to all of his comments

  • "My head is flopping." ha

  • alright so im starting to get the whole tuning thing a bit morebut i still think there shud be drum tuners in the yellow pages XD

  • If you get lessons from someone they probably know drum tuning well enough, and almost every drum teacher does. So ask them or go ask one.

There are alot of youtube videos that help alot on drum tuning, but there's really something to an in person lesson on tuning.

  • check out bob gatzen's videos. they are by far the best on youtube. plus he wrights back to all of his comments

  • About using a key , does every key fit every drum?

    Just wondering thanks.

  • yeah!

  • nice job

  • lol at 4:41

  • That's the reflection of the ceiling fan!

  • wats with the splash ? XD

  • so i just started playing so i'm very new to tuning... i've been experimenting. my friend "tuned" my drums so i can start playing but i feel the floor tome resonates so much i feel it overpowers the rest of the kit... any suggestions?

  • buy some moongel (about $5-6). there's four to a pack. just stick one on the drumhead (two if needed). :D

  • If all drums are tuned correctly, the floor tom can't be the loudest. It's the lowest in pitch. Higher pitches project more. You've got the other two tuned wrong. I

  • Did he tune your reso heads? Check out Bob Gatzen on youtube. He has the best tuning vids

  • Dude your splash cymbal i s possessed.

  • It's a china, not a splash.

  • Yea, sorry. I get muddled up sometimes... :)

  • I have one of those RhythmTech keys and love it. The Regal Tip "Nealy (sp)" key is good to but will eventually strip out (plastic). After I started using the torque keys I would get comments on my drum tone from drummers with kits much more expensive than mine. Completely approve.

  • I'm english, and don't understand what he says when he says "tort key" is that how its spelt?

  • torque key

  • ive had a CB kit for a good few years now, im now looking to upgrade any thoughts or ideas

  • get a ddrum. i just got the white amx series kit and it is gorgous and sounds amazing

  • CB are cheap shit kits

  • my CB kit sucks wang

  • then why do people have to get the bearing edges touched up. just a thought. also i completly understand the concept of seating the head just looked a little rough on the bearing edges. i could be wrong.. also we watch the video but never got to hear the final product of the tom.....

  • okay that video was a complete waiste of time. not so worried about messing up the head when you fist the it but what about the bearing edges on the drum. it is wood after all not metal

  • By pressing on a head you are not going to damage the drum shell. Unless you are playing a Fisher Price drum set. RVP

  • hey Vans i am a beginner drummer and i am looking to get one of those tune keys but how do u know what to set the tension to or anything like that?

  • just keep turning them all untill you like the sound, but you should really hit the drum like an inch away from each of the lugs and make them each sound the same.

  • ive got my drums tuned to D really deep sound plus my tama's are maple

  • haha at like 7:11

his tom sounds like a hardcore metalcore snare drum.......... uber tight....

    pretty funny, i thought

  • My head is kinda flopping. rofl.

  • I just bought an Evans emad 2 bass drum head for my really cheap kit and it's made it sound professional. Took my old crappy head off, peeled back the protective beater pad things and discovered that i'd beaten a small hole in the head. Good timing in buying a new head then :)

  • so is the pitch a preference thing??? or is there some kinda standard for each drum???

  • cleric. I'm no drummer, but I know drums make pitch. The best that can happen, is you make your drums tuned to E. Your snare top skin should be tuned to the pitch of E and the lower skin of that snare should be a low octave to the E of the top skin. This is what i have been told. My drummer takes his snare to the local drum center and 5 mins later its tuned perfect. That last about 2 band night, then its him back to farting around for hours trying to tune. I guess I will have to learn for him.

  • It's all your choice i mean of course you don't want it to sound like crap. Hahah or do you 0_0

But seriously you can choose any sound or anything you want just experiment just the tuning technique is something you should learn thats it.

  • pitch is definitely preference. But just make sure each lug sounds the same

  • Very cool video. I'm playing V-Drums these days, so head tension is more for feel than sound, as everything is sampled. However, this totally takes the mystery out of acoustic tuning. And what a great idea the torque key is! Good stuff.

  • does anyone know where you can get a key like that?

  • guitar center

  • any music store

  • Where did you get that tunekey?

  • can someone help me!!

    I bought a used kit.

Ive had it for about 1 year soon.

But when i play on my snare drum it gives a weak aftersound from the "chains" and i dont like that. That sound even comes up sometimes when i play the toms or bass drum. What should i do??? plz answer someone or link to a video or something that shows what to do.

  • all i did to get rid of that is to tighten the snare (chains) heaps, so they barely move, then itightened the bottom head a fair bit, and the top head so it barely moves when u press on it with ur hand, and by doing that (its probly not right) but i get a nice crack out of it every time, and if my toms make it rattle, i retune it till it doesnt, basically i see a snare as one of the main drums, so u want it to sound spot on all the time

  • Ill try that, but what about the other side of the drum? (Bottom Skin)

  • i have the Key but its shit cuz its only on one tention allthough it has many numbers on but dosent make a diffrence and when i turn its still really tight. i meen evern the looses gage is amazingly tight. i may not be useing it right but iv had it for half a year and still no progress. grrrrrrrrrrr :( disapointing

  • Turn your key backwards around and around. When I first got my key the dial was really loose. Even on 9 it would let go at finger tension. I just turned it all the way around a few times until it started to seem right.

You should do the same, Just the opposite way.

  • kk will try it man thanks. i just want a RnB souns out of them so i tryed and never got the proper sound. i cant tune from ear cuz it takes to long and hard lol so will try your way buddy.

    Thanks

  • oooo pretty cool acctually!thanks! just got a bit scared when he put his fist into the drum!

  • its the fan.....

  • thx man, goood vid

  • nope its the fan. at least i think so

  • am i imagining it or is your china shaking?

    Oo

  • Reflection of air conditioning / fan.

  • i have tht shirt XD

  • The fist stretching thing, should I do that for coated drum heads like the snare head?

  • I would do it to every head. RVP

  • GOOD VID MAN!i got a cheap pearl forum series...i followed wad the vid says...and i got a very nice tuned drum now!good vid

  • When i did that fist thing... i broked my head....

  • Was it a new or old head?

  • crappy head

  • Remo pinstripes eat your mom for breakfast

  • the art of tuning is in learning what to listen for. thus developing a good ear is essential for all who seek a true understanding of a drums tone and ranges. tork keys can get you where you want to go maybe quicker, but you still have to tweak them a bit.

  • i don't think pushing until u hear cracking is a good idea. iv'e seen the resin give way

before and the head will seperate from the rim

then u will be buying a new head...so be carefull

  • hahaha "dont mind the dust"..... by the way this works

  • i love the way this guy explains things

  • THESE TIPS REALLY WORK.

  • thank you for making the video :)

  • hey, just wondering how much was your drum set including everything?

  • hey vanz i wanna ask, what do you think remo power stroke or remo ambasador x, i want to change my drum head cuz standard drum head was sucks heheh

    thanks!!

  • For the snare yes. Try them out.

  • tuneing is scray for me i did it a lot but still not good at it so if i happin to hear a good tone i stick with it and record with it how much are thoses torq keys cost ??

  • i was really scared when i "punched" my drum head in i really thought i would break it

  • where did u get that shirt from? i want one.

  • Drumbum com

  • hey randy, i never know how i should tune the bottom heads on my toms. Should it be really tight or what do you sudgest??? thnx man, love your vids

  • i don't know if any one has replied to you on this question yet, but i would suggest turning your bottom head slightly tighter than your top head, or about even.

  • it all depends on the sound your looking for. if you want high sound then yes higher. but if you want a more beefy sound then go lower

  • the stock heads that came with my pearl vision set were 2 ply. i tuned em up and they sound great. i think i might get the ec2 clears.

  • I had a tool called a "Torque Tool", which I began finding with peoples' drums, who either because they were cheap drums or hadn't been greased regularly over their life, starting giving false clicks as you can imagine. But your vids, playing and sound are VERY professional and you sound like a really cool guy! I was just sharing some info. Rock on!

  • Torque key can be inaccurate though if lugs haven't been maintained to provide equal tension at threads, which is indicated when you have to revisit the lugs to match the tones. I have a Drum Dial and don't use it much as I can tune quite efficiently with a standard key and use the equal turns method as you do. But I think the dial gives a quicker result in a pinch as it does give you the true tension right away.

  • you talk fast. haha

  • freakin love the sound of your set and your playing.

  • That torque key approach assumes all the lugs go in/out the same all the way around. Sometimes they don't which means the lug receiver need to be cleaned lubed. I wonder which method is more accurate and reliable - this or using a drum dial?

  • your ear if you are good at that is the most reliable thing.
