  • Clearly this documentarian was out of touch with America's rich CACC/Hooking tradition. Hell, start with Frank Gotch (why Karl Istaz changed his last name) and go forward. What I WOULD be interested in is a documentary about the meeting of those two worlds - old American Hooking meets English CACC. Guess I'll have to start working on that. :)

  • @gaBehcuoDsuoitneterP Well Lancashire CACC, Cumberland, and Cornwall styles were around before the American styles. However, the real awesome style of Hooking was born out of necessity when the American Carnival Wrestlers needed to genuinely defend themselves from all comers and end fights a quickly as possible.

  • @Shoot4Zion what you trained under billy wicks no way you are honored, he was old an school submission fighter a legend.

  • I read Chapman's book about Gotch. I must admit, it's a great all American story, and some pretty good writing.

  • I grew up in Iowa. Look up Frank Gotch on the net.....and if you want to know the truth, read Mike Chapman's books about the man. Pro wrestling was created in the midwest.....and I'm not talking about what it has become. I'm talking about Frank Gotch grabbing his opponent's foot, turning him over and breaking his leg if he doesn't give up.

  • i just found out im distantly related to Jack Dempsey (real name Thomas Moore) who was taught to wrestle at the snake pit by Billy Riley. wish i could find some clips of him.

  • @Gazzjuk Hi mate are from wigan i live in manchester and met over the years submission wrestlers on the doors but was not educated enough about the greatness of the lads that have come out of wigan. That place is mystical

  • You are so lucky i live in manchester and never knew that wigan had this history. I cant tell you how much im obsessed with this legacy and not much people know about it.

  • Catch Wrestling is the REAL profesional wrestling too bad their arnt any high profile catch wrestling leagues on tv(Catch Wrestling not MMA)

  • It's a shame Catch is not taught in NYC. I am eager to learn but my limited budget prevents me from travelling to learn from Cecchine or Lebell or Jake Shannon. I buy dvd's to learn but I need a partner besides my wife (lol)who's learning some stuff I show her. Any info on a catch wrestling club in NYC?

  • try and do mma and when it comes to sparing try some of the techniques u learn in the dvds

  • Sorry to here arnt there no teachers in new york. i live in manchester 40 minute drive from wigan and didnt know of this legacy. Im going down once a week now its amazing realy hands on.

  • @antowalk hey, ive stopped doing mma recently and i train pro and freestyle wrestling now and again in Bradford/Leeds. do you have any links for where you train? coz i would LOVE to train catch!

  • @peepintom08 You left this comment quite a long time ago but I'll reply anyway. Type in 'Stockport fighters' into google and that will give you all the info you need about a great catch gym. We've actually got a seminar with the head coach Ian Bromley on saturday the 4th of september at our gym in Dewsbury.

  • Catch is dead in NYC. No one wants to teach it and I know many who would give their right arm to learn.

  • I know. Whenever I mention catch wrestling or use the other term "scientific" wrestling, nobody knows what I am talking about. And it is really influential to submission grappling today. And I think as Sakuraba demonstrated, an excellent counter to the more popular art of Jiu Jitsu.

  • Im Billy Rileys great grandson.I never got to meet the man but ive always been fascinated with his,Wigan's and wrestling history as a whole. Thanks for the video clip

  • @nWoBarney hey mate, do you and your family still live in wigan? that's where i live and am looking into doing a project on billy riley and the snakepit

  • snake pit isnt there anymore, but couple of old students of billy riley reopened it in aspull roy wood runs it now, im his student,i met billy riley's nephew.roys old but tough as nails can still move around the mat like us, & his training is tough & rigorous.

  • Please tell me where I can watch the whole documentary, riverhorsetv!!!

  • I have this dvd. I think I got it on ebay or amazon. It is really a dvd worth looking into if you like a bit of history towards wigan wrestling, catch wrestling, or if you are more of an average pro wrestler fan seeking more knowledge. I am pleased to own this dvd.

  • Hi, not sure if anyone's already responded to your comment, but you can buy it online from our ebay store. Simply search for our shop, it's riverhorse. Hope you enjoy the whole film. Best

  • Wigan rocks - no wonder the people are so tough there though, it's pretty rough.
