love this version SO MUCH! he's such an engaging performer, i can't help but smile. smooth and rich, doesn't get much better. this rivals the version of jrb himself singing this. props to both mr. creel and the accompanist for that amazing save at 3:06.
2) How he riffs, and makes it expressive, rather than riffing just for the hell of it. He doesn't do it to show how he can riff, he makes it make sense.
3) When he and the accompanist lose each other, he doesn't bat an eye or lose a beat. Just counts off, and finishes it, strong as hell.
GOD, I love that man. Seriously an incredible performer. It's like this role was made for him.
The tempo is basically as JRB performs it himself, so I am really not sure on the issue there. Keep in mind, the song is called "Moving Too Fast." And Gavin Creel is famous because he has strong musical instincts, versatile technique and a wide range with an upper extension that most tenors would kill for. Hope that clears up those questions for you!
@NoDoubt444 well, actually, the tempo is significantly faster than mr. brown performs it. check out his blog on his website, there's a recording of him playing it. that fact makes this performance even more miraculous. the poor pianist is playing a ridiculously hard piece at almost twice the tempo, mr. creel is trying to spit out a crazy amount of lyrics cleanly and still manages to sound magnificent, not to mention that fantastic save at 3:06. not easy.

Two questions: Why is he singing this so fast? (The pianist can't keep up.) Why is Gavin Creel famous? He's not really that great is he? I mean he's good, but what's the big deal? Is it because he's really pretty? Somebody explain.
because the line is "i found a woman i love". and as we know gavin is openly gay, so he changed the line to "i've got somebody to love" i think its clever too.
Thank you sooo much for posting this! Gavin Creel equals love! I think that I even like the way he does it better than Norbert Leo Butz!!! =D Again, thank you!
this song is moving too fast - the tempo is actually supposed to be significantly slower.... LOL... I know I'm corny, but for real this guy can sing

3 things I love best about this rendition.
1) How he's literally grooving along with it.

Did he say something different at the "I wrote a book and Sonny Mehta read it"? I couldn't hear what he said.
But this was AWESOME anyway.

I think he said "Oprah Winfrey read it" instead of Sonny Mehta
