A nutty, homophobic preacher not only insults gay people on a well-known beach frequented by gay people (who, by the way, bring in many tourist dollars to Rehoboth) but proceeds to takes photos of them WITHOUT their permission? Invasion of privacy, anyone? Also, isn't such offensive behavior disturbing the peace? Am I missing something here?
I washed the video and it desturbed me. I can remember the time when people had some morals and had respect for the men of God. Now if you say something that they don't like they will try to get them into trouble. If they don't like what the person is saying you don't have to lesten to it. There are a lot of things that I am offended by as a born again christian and I have to deal with what others say and do. Someone said that peoplecome to the beach to relax, If God sent them they must go.
I in no way agree with what the preacher was preaching however that doesn't give the Sgt the right take his camera or threaten to arrest for disorderly conduct, Our forefathers shed blood for the right of free speech. The preachers said many times "we do not want to break the law". The Sgt should have been brought up on charges, taxpayers pay this man to serve & protect, not to bully. He actually told them they had to leave the city. To enforce the law does not make you above the law.
it was fault of the preacher who was instigating at the gay section of rehoboth. of course when people are at a beach they're usually there to relax, and the only problem you're supposed to find at a beach is sunburn or clouds. when you instigate at a place where you have no business to start trouble, (would it be any different if he went to a synagogue on a saturday to proselytize to jews), it will provoke confrontation.
While I understand your position, it comes down to "legal" or "illegal". The First Amendment and innumerable court decisions are very clear, and doubtlessly in this case it could be proven, that the police were wrong to threaten arrest. If these folks wished to pursue a suit against the Police Department and/or the City of Rehoboth Beach, they would most certainly win the case in a court of law. Thankfully and true to their Christian beliefs,I believe they have no interest in filing suit.(more)
(By the way, a Synagogue is not really an open, public place. Churches, Synagogues and Mosques legally restrict certain individuals or groups. The Boardwalk is a publice place where everyone is allowed to be... by law!)
I believe that Chief Banks is a good, conscientious person who just doesn't want to put more fuel on any of this fire. He has to live and work here and, unfortunately with all things considered, he feels that must stand on the middle of the fence. While being good intentioned, there is no doubt that his Sergent and patrolman were uninformed and uneducated regarding First Amendment Rights. They were most certainly WRONG! My guess is that this kind if thing won't happen again (very soon, anyway).
I believe that the officers were informed. I also believe that the officers made the correct decision as a result that the freedom of speech isnt free any longer when violence is invoked. the preachers clearly were invoking violence. My guess is that the Chief of police should support his officers and the things that were taught to them.
