Love this scene Mikes made the mental transition of going to fight in vietnam & he survives... I rate the previous comment on Christopher Walkens compassionate character & his ultimate fate
So hard to focus on anything but what Christopher Walken is taking off and putting on. He rocks them Dad jeans and that sweater. Freaking gorgeous man. Gorgeous.
nicky was the compassion, even when they went to war. i think thats why he went coo-coo at the end. the compassion is no place for the battlefield. he had none at the end and thus was not himself anymore. not until he remembered the trees that is...
Friends together but now your all alone! The movie is all about strength of character and is a movie that will draw you to tears. Haunting yet melodic, violent yet peaceful and Happy yet sad!! One of the all time classics if not the best movie ever. You must watch this. I guarantee to pay anyone £10 if they are not moved by this film. An all time classic!
John Cazale - acts for 6 years. SIX YEARS. He stars in The Godfather, The Godfather II, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter. Four of my favourite films - probably four of your favourites too. Can you imagine how great he could've gone on to be?
I would NEVER let people sit around handling guns like that around me. They're waving them around and putting their fingers on the trigger, etc. I've never been with hunters who handle guns like they show in this scene. I guess these guys don't have any real hunting experience. Seems very unrealistic to me. I don't know any gun owners who handle guns like this.
THIS IS THIS is Michael's central psychosocial / sociopolitical statement in the film. It is a protest against abstraction, distortion, disorganization, confusion and misrepresentation - hallmarks of our government's deadly "war aims" as well as the equally deadly counterculture which undermined those aims. The thing is a bullet: the stakes are high. Death is the cost of abstraction.
"This is this" THIS is a bullet, not a joke. He means literally stop pointing that revolver around like it's something else because one day he's not going to be there to remind him of how real bullets are. As real as it gets.
"This is this. From now on you're on your own." = Deal with life as it really is. Don't play around. Don't be unprepared. Like the shot of a gun, the difference between life and death can come down to any sudden moment. Don't stumble around in life with your head up your ass. This is this -- every moment is life and death, not some joke.
@eliezerberry That's why this is such a sophisticated line. It's too simple, too stupid at first sight. The character doesn't really know how to express that deeper feeling you describe, so he utters "this is this". Countless of other movies would've made the mistake to say it more philosophically. Not the Deer Hunter, the Deer Hunter is about REAL people.
I seriously love the Deer Hunter, one of the best, most moving films ever made without a doubt. However, I never really understood the meaning of the 'this is this, this ain't something else; this is this' line.
i think it's pretty simple, he's telling him that it's a courtesy that he doesn't kill him. Stan even says, "what are you gonna shoot me??" Pretty straight forward in my opinion. Life is predator-prey.
