  • Love this scene Mikes made the mental transition of going to fight in vietnam & he survives... I rate the previous comment on Christopher Walkens compassionate character & his ultimate fate

  • This is my favorite movie, and my dad's favorite movie, too.

  • @BlackOpLego No, this is this. This ain't somethin else, this ain't your favorite movie, THIS is THIS.

  • Robert DeNiro is lefthanded? Left-hand-bolt rifle?

  • Hey Stosh.. I said no!

  • You are some fuking friend!

  • John Cazale. Robert Deniro. Christopher Walken. Jon Savage....Holy shit. What a cast...

  • Stanly was an a-hole.

  • Walken was fucking cool and sexy back in the day ;)

  • Im going to war,and I must take care of you here too, instead to you showe some respect...Dont have time for that any more...I got my own problems!

Thats poent of this atleast by me...

  • So hard to focus on anything but what Christopher Walken is taking off and putting on. He rocks them Dad jeans and that sweater. Freaking gorgeous man. Gorgeous.

  • "Hey man, your outta line."

  • nicky was the compassion, even when they went to war. i think thats why he went coo-coo at the end. the compassion is no place for the battlefield. he had none at the end and thus was not himself anymore. not until he remembered the trees that is...

  • @TheSaturnV WOW, you're fucking lame

  • I wouldn't call Robert DeNiro a fuckin' faggot. That'd be like signing my own death warrant...

  • This clip has some thoughtful comments. It's nice to see this instead of everyone putting everyone else down and arguing. I'm humbled. )

  • Christopher Walken: "Whats the matter with you?" or how everyone heard it. "Wits da matta witch chu?" god i love that line

  • Friends together but now your all alone! The movie is all about strength of character and is a movie that will draw you to tears. Haunting yet melodic, violent yet peaceful and Happy yet sad!! One of the all time classics if not the best movie ever. You must watch this. I guarantee to pay anyone £10 if they are not moved by this film. An all time classic!

  • Walken puts his sweater on twice?? 1.33 & 1.55

  • @joeym145 ... I'll bet it was on backwards the first time ;-p

  • He smoked big time so now he's dead. That is That.

  • John Cazale - acts for 6 years. SIX YEARS. He stars in The Godfather, The Godfather II, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter. Four of my favourite films - probably four of your favourites too. Can you imagine how great he could've gone on to be?

  • this is this get it

  • I don't understand what, "This is this" means.

  • @wafflecushioned well he is holding the bullet and is talking about how it is what it is and will not change. that is what I got from it though.

  • all giants in this 5 stars movie!!!!!!!!brilliant scene brilliant actors!

  • for some reason i always loved this whole scene.....its deniro at his best

  • John Cazale: this is this...!!!...muhaahaha...he was a great actor...

  • the meaning is as simple as the term. it means what i say is what i say. hes saying enough bullshit, accept things for what they are.

  • I would NEVER let people sit around handling guns like that around me. They're waving them around and putting their fingers on the trigger, etc. I've never been with hunters who handle guns like they show in this scene. I guess these guys don't have any real hunting experience. Seems very unrealistic to me. I don't know any gun owners who handle guns like this.

  • What year is this movie?

  • @Paperhouse81 1978

  • @marsc85 thanks

  • this is this

  • This is a bullet. This is not a joke. This is serious.

  • Jon Cazale would have gone on to be a giant in Hollywood. What a fucking tragedy that he died so young. He deserved better.

  • I love it...

  • Man, I miss John Cazale. Great Scene!

  • THIS IS THIS is Michael's central psychosocial / sociopolitical statement in the film. It is a protest against abstraction, distortion, disorganization, confusion and misrepresentation - hallmarks of our government's deadly "war aims" as well as the equally deadly counterculture which undermined those aims. The thing is a bullet: the stakes are high. Death is the cost of abstraction.

  • "This is this" THIS is a bullet, not a joke. He means literally stop pointing that revolver around like it's something else because one day he's not going to be there to remind him of how real bullets are. As real as it gets.

  • @eliezerberry, you hit the nail on the head my friend. Did you serve ?

  • "This is this. From now on you're on your own." = Deal with life as it really is. Don't play around. Don't be unprepared. Like the shot of a gun, the difference between life and death can come down to any sudden moment. Don't stumble around in life with your head up your ass. This is this -- every moment is life and death, not some joke.

  • FUCKIN' AY!!! I'm on the same page with you...=)

  • @eliezerberry That was pretty darn enlightening. :D

  • @eliezerberry It's funny because it looks like Mike has his finger in the trigger well of the rifle. Very bad habit.

  • @eliezerberry most profound comment I have ever read on youtube

  • @eliezerberry That's why this is such a sophisticated line. It's too simple, too stupid at first sight. The character doesn't really know how to express that deeper feeling you describe, so he utters "this is this". Countless of other movies would've made the mistake to say it more philosophically. Not the Deer Hunter, the Deer Hunter is about REAL people.

  • @eliezerberry Well said, and thanks! )

  • @eliezerberry

    Yes Robert.

  • I seriously love the Deer Hunter, one of the best, most moving films ever made without a doubt. However, I never really understood the meaning of the 'this is this, this ain't something else; this is this' line.

    Can someone explain?

  • i think it's pretty simple, he's telling him that it's a courtesy that he doesn't kill him. Stan even says, "what are you gonna shoot me??" Pretty straight forward in my opinion. Life is predator-prey.

  • @craggaz Search for "Law of identity" on Wikipedia.

  • lol wtf the fuck does that mean

  • 1:45

  • This was such an important part to the movie Mike is saying you guy's wont have me around. Your gonna have to take care of thing's by yourself.
