I liked this movie. Costner's acting ability aside, he's perfect for the role of the quiet loner. Plus, the effect on civilization would be pretty close to this movie, I think... sadly.

However, the basic premise is silly... if you melted every bit of ice on the planet, the oceans would only rise about 250 ft.. This would be a disaster for all the coastal cities, of course; but there would still be plenty of dry land.

REALLY dry... if the earth warmed that much, you'd have more deserts.

A truly ridiculous film, dennis hoppers character has charts and lots of old stuff presumably from the ships original occupants. But no one seems to have an old map of the world, no one seems to be able to work out that a good place to find any dry land would be where the mountain ranges were, like the Himalayas.

Instead somebody decided to inflict incredible pain on an infant by tattooing a puzzle on her, rather then tell everybody where dry land was. On top of that comes the rather confusing fact that despite trying to find land and continue the human race, hopper decides its a good idea to kill any women he comes across with a large machine gun. There are movies that flopped that we all come to watch years later and realize they weren't that bad. Just as there are movies that did really well that we watch years later and cringe with shame as we see how overrated they really were.

Pity because the idea of trimaran sailing around the World searching for land was genial and if they made it more realistic I would adore this film.

cool movie, accordingly there are a few "island" mountain tops left with trees, but the air wouldn't be breathable in an all ocean world. In fact it would actually be a planet like mars, because the water would absorb so much of the sun's rays, that the temperature would be over 212 degrees farenheit - therefore boiling the oceans until there is nothing left.

I agree with you! And this is a movie, not real, but it deals a lot with pollution, how we take care of the world we live in.. Of my favuorite scenes is when Enola learns to swim, with him underwater, with the lovely music. Wish that scene was five times longer :)

I always liked this film, but the Hollywood press skewered the film crew and Costner for the budget over-runs and the production delays. I think the film cost $200 mill, which at the time was the highest ever, and they had entire movie sets that sunk, etc. The film was trashed by the critics, but its a cool futuristic/fanasty picture with very traditional themes. Used to have a VHS copy of it back in the day.

I was living in Harare at the time when this film premiered. I must say I liked it, and it is something different! The production design is an ace. It is kind of an adventure, with ofcourse a simple message: our world is getting polluted, we must take care of it!

And I just love Enola and her hat! And it is funny when the Deacon says: Go kill something! Great, big movie!

its funny really - back then, this movie was not much of box office success but in good reviews. Now there is major rumor about Kevin Costner wanting to take on this story one more time and the top studios are waving there hands to produce it.. It would be interesting to see part 2 of this, however they would need a good storyline.. a real classic.
