Black Flag is probably the best starting point.

check out Rudimentary Peni, which is probably my favorite hardcore punk band. Check out Disorder, Operation Ivy, Rich Kids on LSD. Some more of my favorites

What Punk is is Anti-Establishment rock music. Bands like Green Day, Blink 182, and Simple Plan are on major labels, sell their merchandise at malls, and definantly aren't legit punk.
