@thelordnazgul76 agree, those who denigrate those fallen French soldiers at Verdun should be ashamed of themselves, remember that they died so we could live in a better world.
I'm an American, and for any Americans commenting, we only really supplied weapons in World War 1. True we did fight in I think the Argonne Forest, correct me if I'm wrong, and I rever our veterans highly, but we only demoralized the Central Powers, we did not score huge victories against them militarily
@SonofAmerica1111 this is an unfortunatly really ignorant yet prevalent idea.
The US did a ton of fighting in their short time on the western front. It was far from just sending supplies, they suffered over 300,000 casualties including 110,000+ battle deaths. That doesn't happen just standing around shuffling supplies. You say you revere our veterans but yet you disrespect them by making misinformed statements
@travisscott2 In the grand scheme of the war, we did very little compared to the other European powers. Our victories were not as costly or strategically valuable as the other powers. We did a good amount of fighting, but we can't even fathom the devastation Europe suffered. So yes, I respect our veterans, despite what you say, but I'm saying Europe did the heavy lifting, which they did and we were mainly a boost in morale more than combatants, which is true since we fought one year of the war
Thank you Thank you Thank you. You just saved me so much work on my history group project. I had to write 20 points on the battle then work in our groups to make a presentation and I got all my points from here (re worded of course).
wtf!!!? why is nobody talking about the germans- they had the best army, just think...... 4 years against america, canada france, russia, italy, some niger countries and japan!!! and also the ,,french soldiers" were all soldieres of africa- while the real frnch soldiers were sitting in the back of the front- the germans fought for their country although they knew they will loose some time..... i mean 10 mio. death soldiers- 5 mio. of them germans, and 5 mio. allied but allied is not france only.
@xyvvz Well just go to France, There isn't a single town without a Peace memorial. Go to Douaumont see the ossuary. Go tell that to my Great grand fathers who never came back.
You Also forgot that the Austrian-Hungarian, Turkey, Bulgaria fought along side the Germans.
At the end only the French, British, Italian and American where fighting against the Germans.
Please stop posting if you don't know what you're talking about. Your hatred against the French made you blind.
@yaouank29 mentioning the Americans and forgetting the Canadians as countries who fought the germans in ww1 boils my blood. Canadians paid over 900 000 thousands deaths. more than nince times the americans. We broke through at Vimy (the only ones who could), won at Paschendale, are the only ones who stayed in the line as the germans launched the war's first gas attack. They were forced to pee on cloths and put them to their mouths to act as filter for they had no masks yet. Dont forget Canada.
Verdun is an important french fortified area. beyond it lays 60% of france's iron and coal industires and mining areas. Retreat would have resulted in death. this is why, when the germans attacked one of the french forts, hte officer shouted "stand up the dead!" and the wounded and limbless crawled onto the roof to effectively repell the krauts. Please note my countries stupidity; The french treches. WTF!!!! we had forts, and we dug trenches in front of them!it is the ranked french who were dumb
the casualtied are abit misleading, he says that the french took 150.000 casualties witch is correct, but then he says that the germans took 434.000 casualties.
The correct way to say this is that 163.000 French was killed, and 143.000 Germans died. Casualties and deaths are not the same, and the French did suffer more casualties than the Germans did, witch is odd taking into account that they where the defenders.
@Draious By 1916 both sides are developing tactics to actually carry out succesful attacks where you can not only achieve your goals but actually do it in a matter where you can kill more of the enemy. The French problem was that the Germans had a number of French troops pinned down in other parts of the western front. So the Germans outnumbered the defenders at Verdun for a time. Also the French had the onus of counter attacking- thus the casualty difference.
@Draious I think he said "nearly 500 and 50 thousand French men perished" I'm not saying your numbers are wrong but the video. Why do so many videos on U tube stink of wrong infomation?
@Draious if you want to knew the number of killed in the whole WW1,
Germany 2 562 897 killed
France : 1 697 800 killed
in compensation of the destructions of mines in North of France, French decided from january 1923 until august 1925 the occupation of the Ruhr in order to have some reparation.
@minhounou You seem to forget the fact that the Germans were fighting against both france, brits, americans and russians, so france STILL look greater casualties than Germany
@Draious And you forget that in 1917, Russia surrendered and the US came the same year,
but in fact, the president Wilson didn't want to send his troops directly, the US fought less than 4 months, and with their propaganda they pretend that they saved France,
It's French who saved their ass in Yorktown, when 70% of the troops was French, and we gave them money for fight....
in this period the US was military too weak against the British.
@minhounou I know what you mean about the Russians being defeated and Americans trying to say that they "saved" europe in the end, but I was merely saying that in both world war 1 and 2 German always took fewer casualties than those they were fighting
@Draious you r really bad in history, in the WW2 German lost 9 128 000 men, if you compare with the UK or the US it's 450 400 for British,
and 400 000 for Americans, so...
the most US killed was did by the Imperial Empire of Japan, not German, the US did the most effort in war in Asia not in Europe,
Italy was a weak ally of Hitler, but Japan was even military more' stronger than Germany, this country was a real God of war in the WW2, even though Japanese lost the war with the atomic bombs.
@minhounou okay how far out are you? I mean what kind of crack are you on?
Germany lost 5,500,000 men during the war, 80% of those where in Russia alone and the Russians suffered 10,700,000 deaths alone to the Germans.
Germany was the strongest nation and the unofficial leader of the Axis powers during the war. The Germans lost around 800.000 men in the European theater, but most of the time they were low on fuel ammo and tanks.
You clearly don't know what you are talking about.
I saw you profile you r from Denmark a little and useless country, I'm sure 95 % of ppl in the world are not able to situate you tiny country, this country did nothing for the world or for the Western civilization.
u can find many true sources on google about the number of killed
I don't have affection towards Hitler, but I must admit that it's was a great military strategist
it's the same with Napoleon when France ruled the whole Europe during 14 years and we fought only against 10 nations.
@minhounou Hahahaha!! Ohhhh the ignorance you are showing xD For its size denmark has done more good to the world than most larger countries! Read up on your history and learn about Scandinavia before opening your mouth as you clearly know nothing about anything
But the US contribution was crucial - it strengthened French morale greatly to know that they and the Brits were not going to have to carry the brunt of what everyone anticipated would be two more years worth of fighting with their diminishing manpower reserves.
Wilson and the US were truly popular in France from 1917 on, but France of course France, England/the Commonwealth destroyed the German army in 1918. We Americans tho represented the certainty of victory that emboldened the Allies
@Draious You should not forget the fact that the population of France in this period was only 39.6 million if you compare with Germany it was 64.9 million, and in Verdun Geman army was far more important in number than the French army.
t is important to note that Phillippe Petain, the leader of the French government when they surrendered to the Germans in WWII, was a Commander of the Center Army Group during Verdun, not to mention serving in the French Army through-out the entire war.
For a man to see so much bloodshed, hundreds of thousands of French men dead with many more physically mutilated... Well its not hard to wonder why he would push for an armistice instead of seeing the French people go through that again.
Brother of my great-grandfather died at Verdun but I don't know in which unit he fought. He was one of many Poles whose died in German Army during WWI. My great-grandfather deserted from German Army after war and joined to Wielkopolska Uprising. In Poland war (not only WWI) was ended in 1921.
at 1:44 whats the general's name???????????????????? i can't understand what he is saying and i can't find his name anywhere!! please help! anyone? please!
Really, Germans were already weakened before Americans joined. They were weakened from the battles, low shortage of supplies, not enough causalities, loss of enthusiasm etc.
It's like Germany had been Hurt very badly, then America joined in to finish them off.
Yes, the Germans were already weakened before the US joined. Yet I have heard first-hand witnesses (grand-grand parents) who told me how great it was to see the Americans arrive - healthy, well-fed, enthusiastic, with brand-new uniforms among the war-weary French who were exhausted after 4 dreadful years of battles. The US compensated for the Russian collapse, and this certainly accelerated Germany's collapse.
The Kaiser proposed many times a peace treaty btw 1914-1918, but France only accepted the unconditional surrender which is pathetic considering the fact that in the early stages of war, France was getting an ass whooping from germans, but the last ones were still willing to make peace, same with russians
The fall of Imperial Germany was one of the worst things to happen to europeans, including frenchies.
It led to the rise of Nazi Germany, and the total humiliation of french forces in WW2
Your telling complete bullshit i don't know about the first things you said but "same with russians"??? its the other way around actually Germany refused the Russian surrender.
Seeing how you actually lied on that one I doubt the rest of what you said is more reliable.
ps: try this perspective had germany bot humiliated france in 1870 Verdun wouldn't have happened.
+ You don't seem to know the effects of this war on France ( lost male population, destroyed Industry, towns, unusable Farmland)
Not true, in 1918 armistace day British army alone had 4 different armys occuping the Rhine until 1920 and were the most combat experienced, equipped, trained and morale high than the rest of the allies. And before armistace day Britain were making large contingents to strangle any and all remaining German advances further, land and sea, but one things for sure Germany wouldnt have won it even if America hadnt joined, British Empire troops were staying on their course...
...and Germany didnt have the means to break through.
Give America their due though they joined and sacrificed for the war and God bless them for it, but their most potent weapon was their morale to the war.
Verdun was like France's stalingrad, where two nations fought vigorously, and therfore, practically bled their armies dry to capture a single location. This may be France's finest hour in military history, because on how long they lasted, and how many casualties they inflicted upon the Germans.
I read a book about the war, i was shocked that the altars and gravestones where detroyed or dammage in world war 2, i never even thought about it till i read it.
tbh its a shit documentary (footage of french soldiers at the wrong time, bad narrator etc)
i dont see why people are going into the old "america saved us" / "no you didnt" crap. anyone who actually knows the foggiest about history, or cares enough to read a book doesnt come out with such stupid things.
I was born and raised near Verdun, and that's a place where you don't go mushroom hunting. Nuf said. By the way, my oncle Paul ended up in Buchenwald in WW2. God bless his soul. Some of you guys talk trash. Some of us mourn...
Verdun...Hell...the comments are making the French look bad, with a final note of appreciation. Fuck it!!! See the memorials, talk to the old bastards, the broken faces of WW1. Verdun: go there, and you can still walk on a bomb. BOOM! When the US is losing, the Brits sidekicks losing, maybe it makes them feel good. Alas, my buddies French Marines died too. Respect them. I don't care what you think of us. But our soldiers are tough and deserve respect.
Not sure why my earlier post didn't show but if it does, my apologies for double posting.
I just returned from Verdun today. Visited several battlesites, and museums and saw some trenches and the torn up forest areas. Also saw several exhibits that commented on the US involvement and very clearly credited the difference that the US made to the outcome. The numbers of KIA/MIA/wounded is just staggering and must have been a pure hell. It's too bad that we haven't learned from this horror.
The United States saved UK & France from defeat in both WW1 and 2 - Germany fairly won the direct wars, both English and French stood defeated and financially depleted before America bailed them on both occasions.
Allied victory in WW1 was already pretty much a sure thing by the time the U.S. joined in. They certainly helped speed up the end considerably and hence saved lots of lives, but they certainly didn't "bail out" anyone.
Here is a very very simple way, therefore faulse, to put it... The US didn't save anybody during WWI, if the war had lasted one more year, be sure Germany would have been invaded. Germany couldn't take it anymore as it wasn't a democracy, it was ruled by the army, something that cant go on forever. The American help is way more obvious for WWII, but USSR did the job too.
Please don't start to argue about who saved who. The Americans joined the French and the British and that was a good thing. I'd rather have them on my side than against us. However saying that the Americans saved us that's a pretty strong statement. It's like saying that if the French wouldn't have helped the USA they wouldn't have got their independence.
Not really. The Michael offensive was launch by Ludendorf was an attempt to grasp victory before the Americans arrived. Lundendorf knew that when the Americans arrived it would be impossible to win. The Allies were back on their heals afterward and after it's failure Lundendorf himself realized Germany could not win. I'd say his own words and actions are proof enough that the Americans are what tipped the balance.
Germany sure as hell was not winning, but by 1917 the Allies were not faring much better. 1918 invasion of Germany proper without access to American supplies and credit? Highly doubtful.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah, you re absolutely right. but some french always talk about how they beat germans, how they won 1. and 2. ww. they really believe that shit. you should accept that french re very haughty, even more than jews
Is that how you determine whether the French are cowards or not, just by counting the days and weeks on how long they held out against the Germans. Bravery doesnt count on how long you can hold, what matters is how hard they fought against the invaders. It's the generals who are inept and unqualified to lead their armies. Not the soldiers doing in losing the war.
the language in some of these comments is very very bad !!!!!!!!!!!!!! you guys need to sit down and relax , stay calm, be cool.......... and if that dont work then go fuck yourselves up the ass!!!! u cockheads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! bye bye now and have a nice-day
I pity those who call the French cowards, i admire the French and their bravery in every war they've encountered, they won 80% of the wars in history so far.
I wish that people would stop judging the French from what happened in WWII. They may have been conquered in 1940 but they have not lost any hope and they continue fighting on, like the brave men they are. Vive la France!!!!!!!!!
@expertstrategy un grand merci !Thank you from France for your comment expertstrategy.
I just say to those bastards who call us cowards(hidden behind a screen) : look at the names of the 400 french military victories written on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris .......and try to do the same (if you can)
@expertstrategy it was the maginot line in wwii that brought them down, a consequence of poor leadership not ineffective soldiers, i agree with you, to a degree. 6 weeks though...but other than that they fight well
you don't understand the concept of france. if you did, you woudn't have said that. france has the WORST army until Napoleon, and after napoleon was defeated, france still had the worst army. they took on England, and tried to make New France out of our contry which is now Canada, and they lost their colony.
@f3wbs, actually, france had the best army during the reign of Louis XIV, and were often dominant in Europe. Over the centuries, they expanded their country and permanently annexed lands. France was dominant in Europe from 1648-1870, when their role was taken by Germany. Even in the French and Indian War, the French defeated the British most of the time with a very small army. France won seven wars in 20 years The French/Franks created four empires in history.
@f3wbsToday 26% of Canadian are still French Canadian, so they keep some region in Canada the province od Québec is the largest province of Canada and one of the mot populated, in New Brunswick 37% are French Canadian,
what about Pierre elliot Trudeau, Jean Chretien, etc...they are French Canadian and they ruled this country.
@RappaBitch, which do you refer to, Napoleon I, Napoleon II, or Napoleon III. France won dozens of colonial wars and carved out a massive empire in Africa. They participated in the Italian War of Independence and the nation of Italy was created. The provences of Savoy and Nice were given to the French. The French invaded Spain in 1823 and put down a rebellion. They fought in the Greek war of independence against the Turks. There is also the Crimean War which they won as well.
@SiCGaming123 The only reason America ever joins in on World War is to save their own necks. British just dive in there. Okay the French 'Army' were cowards in the second world war. But I can't say the same aabout the French Resistance they did so much for WWII there's not many who have done more than they have.
The real cowards during WWII were the guys in the French Government (not all of them but still...). The French Army fought well during the Battle of France, but it was a battle lost way before it had even started.
Don't forget the Free French Forces, Normandie-Niemen, etc... and of course the Resistance.
Hum, most wars won by France were also led by Frenchmen. Anyway, I've just realized where that rule come from... I really hope you do not take that site seriously dude... Well, I don't know if you have any kind of Historical knowledge, maybe, maybe not. I'm open for discussion though, expect with Trolls (I'm not saying you're one, but coming up with that kind of affirmation is not a very good start). :)
@Morgoth51 Well ever since the Naperalon era, France's military were not as success as much. From WW2 to Indochina to Algeria, most of them has not been scuessfuly so in a sense i think that's why the french stereotype came from.
@publicmario17 Yeah, true, France was more successful as a Monarchy (or an Empire). For the stereotype, it really appeared after France used its Veto at the UN Security Council, against the War in Iraq. Sometimes it's difficult to be right.... and for the USA to admit they were wrong. About Algeria : the French army managed to deal with the FLN, however the war was highly unpopular, and the Evian Agreements eventually gave Algeria its independance. It was more of a political defeat. Cheers :)
Algerian rebellion was overcrushed by French army. Their losses were over 1 million, while French army lost around 30000 troops from 1954 to 1962. The French won the main battles in Indochina, from 1945 to 1954, except the last one Dien Bien Phu in 1954.These 2 wars ended in political agreements for the French withdrawal. Too many Anglosaxons are a bunch of ignorant fucks. French military background is more than 1500 years and is probably more filled with victories than defeats.
@Camarale I agree if France never won a war France would not be one of the if not oldest european country.
It would have been conquered long ago. May the men who fell so that we can be free today rest in peace they suffered so mutch and deserve our respect.
@SiCGaming123 England and the USA have won many a war without allies? France, yes.
Regarding democratic France, she won against several anti-revolutionary coalitions before becoming an empire. Democratic France won many colonial wars (against China, and several minor nations)
because it was the germans who saw attrition strategy as a viable way of winning the war ... Instead of devising an ingenious way to break the stalemate, the german generals (namely hindenburg) saw attritional strategy as the best way to win the battle. This was not Haig/joffre's intention. But the germans didnt care about the number of dead, as long as they killed relatively more allied troops.
They desired to "bleed france to death". This was not a strategy, but a lack of one ...
Your judgement made with today's thinking, you must to know there was not tanks, missiles or strategic air force and both sides commanders used the cheaper resource they got: infantry men.
Dumbass, France lost 1.3 millions soldiers and 5 millions were wounded on a population of 40 millions. That means 30% of the french men were killed or wounded. How do you call it? Cowardice?
Then, it's America that impeched France to launch its last offensive in 1918. Be sure it would have taken Berlin within a month.
As the commentator says...English's army ( both WW! & WW2 ) was closed BEHIND !! of the French !!! good example of courage !!! llllllollllll !!!!!!.....no offense by the way !!
the war is populational controll, in glorious form, preffer a war than to starve from lack of food because too many people fucking & eating, Oh no i live in that age no war , starvation Holy Shit 8O
i came to that interesting conclusion yesterday. If it wasnt for WW1 many europeans would be much shorter. if you were too tall, you could draw attention in the trenches more easily., you couldnt enlist at the beggining or were mostly sent to the back lines.
tall people are good for using long ranged weapons & cover more ground than small legged short-men, but unfornutaly they have higher profile & they are killed off easely, like china/korean/vietnam wars, where usa killed nearly all tall mongols, but asian women like tall men & the number of dead are replaced easely ♫▐XD
Good footage but the information given is less than accurate. For example, they speak of 550,000 french soldiers having perished. The actual number of dead and missing is about 160,000 for the french army, and 143,000 for the Germans. Also, what makes the commentator believe that the war continued for three more years after the end of the battle of Verdun in December 1916? WWI ended in Nov 1918.
A formal state of war between the two sides persisted for another seven months, until signing of the Treaty of Versailles with Germany on 28 June 1919.
Who says that? American right-wing idiots who know nothing about history. France lost more soldiers in WWI alone than the US has lost in all of its wars in history combined.
It's easy to check: 1.5 million French soldiers were killed in WW1. The USA lost some 620,000 in the Civil War (18611865), 116,516 in WWI, 292,131 in WW2, 80,000 combined in the Korean & Vietnam wars. Add a few thousands in other wars.
That's why we looove people who shout "French cowards" from beind their computers!
I am an American and I don't feel that way. The French did so much to defend their nation. They did much of the heavy lifting before we entered the war.
Agree! What most people forget is that the main german goal here was to bleed the french army white with excessive use of artillery and attacks. Because the germans knew that the french would defend verdun at all costs. Verdun was the gate to paris. The french where at the edge of defeat, then the somme front opened so they could lift the siege on verdun a little. Both armies suffered great casualties, the amerians as a new fresh army just give them the final blow.
to make this clear at the beginning: this is abolute for sure no trial to offend you: but how many germans did you really hear by yourself telling such kind of shit?
We are (i am nearly the same age as you) responsible for our children to be able to live together as Europeans today and in the future.
zurda 42 calm down ye, im english, my middle name is verdun, my great grandfather faught at verdun and we didnt even get a mention . chill ye, muppit.
Interesting video, but someone should seriously have given the narrator some tips on pronunciation. One cannot blame him, mind you, but one would at least expect the historians to have been able to correct it.
Nous devons rendre hommage aussi à nos amis Americains qui a la tête du "Lafayette Squadron" se battirent dans les airs à nos côtés avant l'entrée en guerre des Etats Unis. Honneur aux braves, honneur à nos amis !!
This is proof that the French surrender stereotype is BS

the casualtied are abit misleading, he says that the french took 150.000 casualties witch is correct, but then he says that the germans took 434.000 casualties.
The correct way to say this is that 163.000 French was killed, and 143.000 Germans died. Casualties and deaths are not the same, and the French did suffer more casualties than the Germans did, witch is odd taking into account that they where the defenders.
Draious 1 year ago
@Draious By 1916 both sides are developing tactics to actually carry out succesful attacks where you can not only achieve your goals but actually do it in a matter where you can kill more of the enemy. The French problem was that the Germans had a number of French troops pinned down in other parts of the western front. So the Germans outnumbered the defenders at Verdun for a time. Also the French had the onus of counter attacking- thus the casualty difference.
fp470 1 year ago
@Draious I think he said "nearly 500 and 50 thousand French men perished" I'm not saying your numbers are wrong but the video. Why do so many videos on U tube stink of wrong infomation?
1Dougy85 1 year ago
@Draious if you want to knew the number of killed in the whole WW1,
Germany 2 562 897 killed
France : 1 697 800 killed
in compensation of the destructions of mines in North of France, French decided from january 1923 until august 1925 the occupation of the Ruhr in order to have some reparation.
minhounou 1 year ago
@minhounou You seem to forget the fact that the Germans were fighting against both france, brits, americans and russians, so france STILL look greater casualties than Germany
Draious 1 year ago
@Draious And you forget that in 1917, Russia surrendered and the US came the same year,
but in fact, the president Wilson didn't want to send his troops directly, the US fought less than 4 months, and with their propaganda they pretend that they saved France,
It's French who saved their ass in Yorktown, when 70% of the troops was French, and we gave them money for fight....
in this period the US was military too weak against the British.
but they probably forget this....
minhounou 1 year ago
@minhounou I know what you mean about the Russians being defeated and Americans trying to say that they "saved" europe in the end, but I was merely saying that in both world war 1 and 2 German always took fewer casualties than those they were fighting
Draious 1 year ago
@Draious you r really bad in history, in the WW2 German lost 9 128 000 men, if you compare with the UK or the US it's 450 400 for British,
and 400 000 for Americans, so...
the most US killed was did by the Imperial Empire of Japan, not German, the US did the most effort in war in Asia not in Europe,
Italy was a weak ally of Hitler, but Japan was even military more' stronger than Germany, this country was a real God of war in the WW2, even though Japanese lost the war with the atomic bombs.
minhounou 1 year ago
@minhounou okay how far out are you? I mean what kind of crack are you on?
Germany lost 5,500,000 men during the war, 80% of those where in Russia alone and the Russians suffered 10,700,000 deaths alone to the Germans.
Germany was the strongest nation and the unofficial leader of the Axis powers during the war. The Germans lost around 800.000 men in the European theater, but most of the time they were low on fuel ammo and tanks.
You clearly don't know what you are talking about.
Draious 1 year ago
I saw you profile you r from Denmark a little and useless country, I'm sure 95 % of ppl in the world are not able to situate you tiny country, this country did nothing for the world or for the Western civilization.
u can find many true sources on google about the number of killed
I don't have affection towards Hitler, but I must admit that it's was a great military strategist
it's the same with Napoleon when France ruled the whole Europe during 14 years and we fought only against 10 nations.
minhounou 1 year ago
@minhounou Hahahaha!! Ohhhh the ignorance you are showing xD For its size denmark has done more good to the world than most larger countries! Read up on your history and learn about Scandinavia before opening your mouth as you clearly know nothing about anything
Draious 1 year ago
But the US contribution was crucial - it strengthened French morale greatly to know that they and the Brits were not going to have to carry the brunt of what everyone anticipated would be two more years worth of fighting with their diminishing manpower reserves.
Wilson and the US were truly popular in France from 1917 on, but France of course France, England/the Commonwealth destroyed the German army in 1918. We Americans tho represented the certainty of victory that emboldened the Allies

@Draious You should not forget the fact that the population of France in this period was only 39.6 million if you compare with Germany it was 64.9 million, and in Verdun Geman army was far more important in number than the French army.
burtoncaly 1 year ago
t is important to note that Phillippe Petain, the leader of the French government when they surrendered to the Germans in WWII, was a Commander of the Center Army Group during Verdun, not to mention serving in the French Army through-out the entire war.
For a man to see so much bloodshed, hundreds of thousands of French men dead with many more physically mutilated... Well its not hard to wonder why he would push for an armistice instead of seeing the French people go through that again.

Really, Germans were already weakened before Americans joined. They were weakened from the battles, low shortage of supplies, not enough causalities, loss of enthusiasm etc.
It's like Germany had been Hurt very badly, then America joined in to finish them off.
GoDxDeSiGNs 2 years ago
Yes, the Germans were already weakened before the US joined. Yet I have heard first-hand witnesses (grand-grand parents) who told me how great it was to see the Americans arrive - healthy, well-fed, enthusiastic, with brand-new uniforms among the war-weary French who were exhausted after 4 dreadful years of battles. The US compensated for the Russian collapse, and this certainly accelerated Germany's collapse.
Fridomfry 2 years ago
The Kaiser proposed many times a peace treaty btw 1914-1918, but France only accepted the unconditional surrender which is pathetic considering the fact that in the early stages of war, France was getting an ass whooping from germans, but the last ones were still willing to make peace, same with russians
The fall of Imperial Germany was one of the worst things to happen to europeans, including frenchies.
It led to the rise of Nazi Germany, and the total humiliation of french forces in WW2
AfflictionFTW 2 years ago
Your telling complete bullshit i don't know about the first things you said but "same with russians"??? its the other way around actually Germany refused the Russian surrender.
Seeing how you actually lied on that one I doubt the rest of what you said is more reliable.

Frenchy627 2 years ago
Not a american fan here but...the invasion of German Empire in 1918 would had been impossible, without US troops and supplies.
As a guy stated below me, Germany surely wasn't winning in 1918, but neither the French or UK..
All three of them where short in manpower and munitions..
USA joining the war on Entente side, forced the exhausted Germans to capitulate.
UK and France couldn't defeat on their own the Imperial Germany.
USA played a important role, in the capitulation of Great Germany.
AfflictionFTW 2 years ago
@ AfflictionFTW
Not true, in 1918 armistace day British army alone had 4 different armys occuping the Rhine until 1920 and were the most combat experienced, equipped, trained and morale high than the rest of the allies. And before armistace day Britain were making large contingents to strangle any and all remaining German advances further, land and sea, but one things for sure Germany wouldnt have won it even if America hadnt joined, British Empire troops were staying on their course...

Verdun was like France's stalingrad, where two nations fought vigorously, and therfore, practically bled their armies dry to capture a single location. This may be France's finest hour in military history, because on how long they lasted, and how many casualties they inflicted upon the Germans.

I just returned from Verdun today. Visited several battlesites, and museums and saw some trenches and the torn up forest areas.

Dannoo007 2 years ago
Allied victory in WW1 was already pretty much a sure thing by the time the U.S. joined in. They certainly helped speed up the end considerably and hence saved lots of lives, but they certainly didn't "bail out" anyone.
Graphic36 2 years ago 13
Here is a very very simple way, therefore faulse, to put it... The US didn't save anybody during WWI, if the war had lasted one more year, be sure Germany would have been invaded. Germany couldn't take it anymore as it wasn't a democracy, it was ruled by the army, something that cant go on forever. The American help is way more obvious for WWII, but USSR did the job too.
adriano911 2 years ago
Im pretty sure that the USSR was suffering from a revolution in WWI
I dunno for sure
and, if your saying that the US did not contribute to WWI than that is a very idiotic statement
politicalanomaly 2 years ago
Please don't start to argue about who saved who. The Americans joined the French and the British and that was a good thing. I'd rather have them on my side than against us. However saying that the Americans saved us that's a pretty strong statement. It's like saying that if the French wouldn't have helped the USA they wouldn't have got their independence.
yaouank29 2 years ago
I want saying americans saved anyone
I said that the person had a pretty bold statement saying that americans did not contribute at all
politicalanomaly 2 years ago
I'd say his own words and actions are proof enough that the Americans are what tipped the balance.
ratmilkcheese 2 years ago 2
Germany sure as hell was not winning, but by 1917 the Allies were not faring much better. 1918 invasion of Germany proper without access to American supplies and credit? Highly doubtful.

Is that how you determine whether the French are cowards or not, just by counting the days and weeks on how long they held out against the Germans. Bravery doesnt count on how long you can hold, what matters is how hard they fought against the invaders. It's the generals who are inept and unqualified to lead their armies. Not the soldiers doing in losing the war.

f3wbs 1 year ago
@f3wbs, actually, france had the best army during the reign of Louis XIV, and were often dominant in Europe. Over the centuries, they expanded their country and permanently annexed lands. France was dominant in Europe from 1648-1870, when their role was taken by Germany. Even in the French and Indian War, the French defeated the British most of the time with a very small army. France won seven wars in 20 years The French/Franks created four empires in history.

They participated in the Italian War of Independence and the nation of Italy was created. The provences of Savoy and Nice were given to the French. The French invaded Spain in 1823 and put down a rebellion. They fought in the Greek war of independence against the Turks. There is also the Crimean War which they won as well.

Cheers :)
Morgoth51 6 months ago
@publicmario17
French military background is more than 1500 years and is probably more filled with victories than defeats.

because it was the germans who saw attrition strategy as a viable way of winning the war ...
This was not a strategy, but a lack of one ...

trubengalgold 2 years ago 15

With kind regards from Germany.....

Fuck you idiot....i dont like the fact every day First world narrates the history of the third one.

Such a pointless war. History would be so much stranger if WW1 hadn't happened until decent Airplane and Tank development.

The video is cool but that battle was much
more terrible and tragic that what the narrator
says.
