Great cover -- I do this one all the time!!!! I don't usually listen to covers of songs I like because people ruin them. But -- You really did NAIL it. Nice work.
With the technology making it so easy people to perform and record (and share) cover versions and their own original music, there's a remarkable amount of junk on the web, notably on youtube. Honestly, this is one of the best I have seen in a quite a long time....very nicely and certainly tastefully done, true to the original, yet uniquely interpretive and very melodic; well done indeed~
Your playing and your voice are beautiful. I recently took the piano up again after many years away, and Tom Waits is one of my all-time favorites. I am so glad you posted this. This is just inspirational.
First I want to thank everyone who commented. I didn't think the reactions would be this positive. Thank You!
To Answer your Question jamzi: I think that singing is no different to any other instrument you learn. Learning the technique is important but not everything. Practice makes the difference. Sing everywhere and everytime you can.
I just love how your voice sounds! I'm trying to play guitar and sing for myself anytime i can, but i can't say i can see improvements. But i'll keep on singing. Who knows, maybe someday i'll be as good as you ;p Would you do a version of Tom Traubert's Blues or Martha too? Would be smashing ;)
You're a great singer. Did the singing come natural for you, or have you just sung by yourself? I really want to know, because i want to be able to sing like you =O)
People like you are the reason that I never have or will pay one iota of attention to crap like "American Idol". You are a solid musician, and a most gifted and creative singer-not some hyped up kareoke hack. It nauseates me to see someone of your ability performing in a bedroom on youtube while some barfly trained flavor of the year gets the deal of a lifetime.
Wow, that's a great cover. You put your own flavor to it and that's great. Too many Tom Waits characters are just bad impressions that end up sounding like the Cookie Monster and a sadsack at music.
Good listening. thank you

nice version. i'd recommend maybe an intro and a not so strange ending but your voice and piano mix it up pretty well. good choice of song
