Did you notice any major difference in sound after to painted/finished it? I'm about to finish my first attempt at one and was debating on painting it (with band logo, etc) or not. Or am I over analyzing a plywood box?
@SamuraiAstray I wouldn't say over analyzing, that's the thing. It's wood box, BUT, it's touchy. I got lucky, mine actaully sounds great, seems to get better with time. As far as the poly goes, I wouldn't worry about that, It's a pretty thin piece of wood and I figued if anything it would make it a little stronger? Plus the smallest piece you'll by probably by you can probably make at least 4 tampa's out of so I wouldn't worry. You just have to play with it till you like the way it sounds.
Interesting. In seeing the guitars in the back ground, I figure you would have used thinner plywood on all sides from the start. with the frames, the plywood needn't be a structural element at all. Thanks for sharing how you went about it.
Nice vid. Getting ready to make my own. Got a couple questions for ya. First, what are the beads on the strings made of? Are they steel, brass, or something else? Also are those guitar strings they are on? If so what gauge? Also thinking about using red oak for my box. Do you think that it will have good tone? Anyways again, great video. Love your idea with the whammy bar. Genius!
@zanderwow they are guitar strings, and to be honest, the beads are in the craft section at wal-mart. They really didnt' do much to tell you the truth. If you want to do a string cajon you have to get tuners for a guitar so that you can adjust the tension on them, I didn't do that, but have seen it done. They are Low E strings(mediums). I wanted more snare and cutting a snare drum spring in half worked perfect. Any wood will work, It just depends on the tone you want. It'll sound great man
can you lock the snare at different pressures on the front tampa? I just finished mine, and I'm waiting on my snare to come in. I was thinking about stretching the entire snare across the front, but now I'm thinking of cutting in it half like you. Just wondering if yours is on and off, or you can adjust the pressure. I'm thinking of using 3/8" all thred for the shaft, and a wing nut on the outside to lock it at different pressures??? Courious about your set up. thanks,
@whitecotton7 yes, it can be adjusted. I used an old whammy bar from a strat and just drilled different holes to make it closer or further from the front panel. It's handy for diff songs and "tuning" if you will. any more ? let me know.
@neilbunker Thanks!!! yeah, I can't remember if I explained what exactly I did for it. Lots of trial and error. If you really are serious about building, hit me up. This Cajon sounds 1000% better than any of them that they sell at guitar center. I brought it in there, and it blew them away.
dude is that really recrods or records?????

It looks great. W/ a lot of thought towards the engineering and construction. Thanks for sharing this. Good job.

@colemanproject I used some stencils from the dollar store, black paint then used polyurethane clear over the top.

Very cool and creative set-up for the snare, I've been reading up on these DIY cajons and no one else seems to have a good system for snares.
