I can assume they will hire an "unknown" actor for L. That's what they did for the Japanese film and it worked perfectly. I would be more worried about a writer and director. I would pick Christopher Nolan as the director because of his impressive filmography (like The Prestige and his interpretation with the Batman films).

Kenichi Matsuyama is practically L in real life, but that doesn't take away from the fact that I'm quite happy with your casting choices in general. =)
They probably will keep only the main characters: Raito, L and Misa and others will not exist or play unimportant role. I mean Japanese made two DN movies and they left out so much. Americans will have only one movie and they probably will focus on Raito/Misa romance more than Raito and L trying out smart each other.
Great choices. Especially Cillian Murphy as Mikami, he's perfect in the role of the psychopath. And Soichiro just has a Liam Neeson vibe to him, I've always thought that. And Ryuk is the kind of role that Johnny Depp would totally go for.
I do think Johnny Depp would make a good Ryuk...if you wouldn't see and hear Jack Sparrow in his voice too much like I know I would if he was playing Ryuk...
now...L on the other hand....Originally I was against him playing L but I think that his acting skills are exactly what a movie like this needs...as long as he knew what L was supposed to look like I think he would play him well.....
All in all I think theres a good chance they are gonna mess this movie up in the first place.

If watch him in Hannibal the Rising, you'd understand why. The only downfall to him is that he has a heavy french accent, but I'm sure he'd fix that. He's a very good actor!

i agree with SarahxxBee, i don't think they have what it takes to be as sinister as Light. Sure, they have tons of hit movies/shows under their belts, but i can't imagine them as sinister as Light was in the Anime/Manga.
Okay so theres a leaked rough draft of the movie and god damit it sucks! Light's name is changed to luke murray bcuz apparently light is to weird there are NO death gods and luke or whatever doesn't go insane he stays good! gabage!

Great choices. Especially Cillian Murphy as Mikami, he's perfect in the role of the psychopath. And Soichiro just has a Liam Neeson vibe to him, I've always thought that. And Ryuk is the kind of role that Johnny Depp would totally go for.
All I can say is that this movie better be made!

I do think Johnny Depp would make a good Ryuk...if you wouldn't see and hear Jack Sparrow in his voice too much like I know I would if he was playing Ryuk...
now...L on the other hand....Originally I was against him playing L but I think that his acting skills are exactly what a movie like this needs...as long as he knew what L was supposed to look like I think he would play him well.....
All in all I think theres a good chance they are gonna mess this movie up in the first place.

I go back and forth on who should play L...part of my mind says he needs to be young...

Logan Lerman would be perfect as L. Did not like any actor, to play Light: according to me it can just be Zac Efron (surely better than Chase Crawford). Taylor Momsen as Misa sounds a good choise, Love Alex Pettyfer as Mello! Liam Neeson is probably better as Soichiro Yagami, but I do not know... Maybe someone else? Max Records is a perfect Near! Dennis Hopper may rest in peace (grat actor!)... No opinion about the others

Gaspard Ullei as Light Yagami, for the win.
If watch him in Hannibal the Rising, you'd understand why. The only downfall to him is that he has a heavy french accent, but I'm sure he'd fix that. He's a very good actor!

I think Ben Barnes should play Light Yagami, because Light seems so innocent and you wouldn't expect him to do things like this. And if you watched Dorian Gray then you know why I suggest Ben Barnes as Light (Kira). Or he should play L, because of his hair LOL^^

excellent choices! too bad that many big name actors will never be cast in the same small time movie =( the only choices I wasn't thrilled with were the Matsuda ones...then again I have no idea who should play him so I can't judge right? xD I thought Michael Pitt would be the perfect Mello, and I'd be surprisingly happy with Chase Crawford as Light Yagami. Johnny as ryuk...xD that'd be sweet

i agree with SarahxxBee, i don't think they have what it takes to be as sinister as Light. Sure, they have tons of hit movies/shows under their belts, but i can't imagine them as sinister as Light was in the Anime/Manga.

In my opinion, I do not think Zac Efron is suitable for the character 'Light Yagami.' However, Zac does look like Light which is not a problem but Zac's acting is my biggest concern. Another thing is, I heard Johnny Depp was rumoured to be the greatest detective in the world, 'L.' Now, I could not see how Johnny can play such a character because Johnny is too old to play the role. BUT! Johnny Depp should definitely play the character the Death God, 'Ryuk.'

As for DBZ they tried to make a single movie that encompassed about 200 episodes... not even Christopher Nolan could turn that into a decent movie
But thats how Death Note is different, its only 35 episode, a couple of which that can be voided, and the director is still up in the air so theres still hope... so everyone who's already started cutting their wrists about this... chill out

Honestly if Zac Efron was Light I'd go see just to see him LOSE his mind at the end, depending on if they keep to the story line PLUS added bonus for those of you who hate Zac Efron he'd end up getting shot to death by Matsuda (which I think Zack Braff would be perfect to play) which would be a win technically,
Liam Neeson is the best choice for Souchiro Yagami, if you've seen 'Darkman', Liam Neeson's character can do that 'acting crazy in the car' scene as Souchiro Yagami.
